John Michel - Egotrip

Really cool. Very grandiose style of production which works well with the energy brought by the rapping. I just think it would’ve been nice to get some more relaxed tracks on here. Sometimes it feels like they’re trying to blow you away on every song, which admittedly they often do. But having that sort of energy the whole way through can make moments like “world’s end” feel a little less impactful. Overall though really enjoyable album.

Something quite indescribable

Michael Jackson - Thriller
96

I mean, it's Thriller, what more is there to say? I do somewhat agree with the common opinion that this doesn't really flow that well as an album, but guess what? Who cares! The songs are incredible! While the term "pop-perfection" gets thrown around a lot, this actually is it. Also, this kinda isn't really an album anyway, it's basically a greatest hits compilation, but released before they were hits. And I think that provides such an interesting, and one of a ... read more

Michael Jackson - Off the Wall

Probably the best disco album ever made. It's just so much fun, so joyful, so groovy. And the BASS. Oh my. Some of the best bass riffs ever written are on here

Prince and The Revolution - Purple Rain
86

The most poppy pop rock to ever pop rock

This rating might be a crime, but I think some of the 80s aesthetics are a bit too much for my tastes at points. Ik its like 40 years old but I struggle with the mixes a lot on some of these songs, in ways I don't with other stuff from this period of music. I think it's down to the fact that Prince's ambition with how detailed and layered these instrumentals were going to be were almost a bit ahead of the technology at the time. ... read more

Hold up how did I never realise that D'ANGELO made unshaken??

Doechii - Anxiety

This is real bad

I hate that THIS is the Doechii song to get commercial success. It is like not even an original song tbh feels more like a cover to me. The chorus is kinda cool, but yeah nah this doesn't match up with anything from her mixtape.

Lauryn Hill - The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill
98

She really dropped one of the greatest R&B and Hip Hop albums in one and then just dipped

Obviously the music is incredible, but I just wanna say, this album has THE BEST skits ever! They all perfectly progress the narrative of the album, and never feel like wasted time. I love as well how we hear at the start of this fictional class, Lauryn isn't present, effectively saying how she never learned anything about love like these kids did. I also love how we hear her learn about love all ... read more

Nirvana - In Utero

I really cannot pick between this and Nevermind, they're both just so good.

Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation

2nd half is pretty enjoyable, but a couple lower points through it (still great). But man that first half is insane. Not a wasted moment.

Quadeca - MONDAY

So uh… this album is gonna be really good

I LOVE QUADECA

Fishmans - LONG SEASON
89

Why does it turn into a death grips beat for like two minutes halfway through

Really really good, but not quite as good as the live version. If this was the live long season it would be a ten, no joke.

This album is a bit of a mess, clearly intentionally, but I find it less endearing than the way the same idea was executed on Yeezus. There's just too many nothing tracks on here for me to ever want to properly come back to it in full again.
Like almost all Kanye albums though there's still a good few great tracks to take from this. I'll be coming back to No More Parties In LA for the kdot verse many more times. Oh and the Sampha feature too that came completely out of nowhere!

Kanye West - Yeezus
87

I think this is one of Kanye's most interesting albums in his discography. It really shows a completely different side of him musically. This thing is just alllll over the place. It's genre blending and abrasive, but still all comes together to be relatively cohesive. And Bound 2 is such a cool closer to this whole thing, in the weirdest way. Also it's crazy that Daft Punk produced On Sight the same year they made RAM lmao

Kanye West - Graduation
88

The Daft Punk vocoder brings me so much serotonin

Graduation sees Kanye exploring more synth sounds in his production style, which might feel like a strong departure from his last two albums, but the signature Kanye production is still very present amongst it all. Maybe an unpopular opinion, but I think this is actually better than Late Registration. To me itt has more consistent highs, even if its lows are lower (eh hem drunk and hot girls), and it reallyyy benefits from the lack of skits. ... read more

Still really enjoyable, but I don't enjoy the deep cuts on here as much as on The College Dropout. The skits also drag this one more I think. Some amazing tracks on here though, obviously.

Kanye West - The College Dropout

That bass lick on all falls down is INSANE

This is a passionate, young and hungry Kanye, full of creativity. Something unfortunately we don't have anymore.

Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works Volume II

This guy needs to soundtrack a horror film, that shit would be terrifying

Again a difficult one to rate to be honest. There is no question that every single song on here is genre defying, boundary pushing, produced fantastically, and unlike anything else in the world of music. However... just because I can recognize something as boundary pushing, doesn't mean I have to like it. There are far too many songs on here that I just feel uncomfortable listening to really. On the other hand, ... read more
