Imagining myself in 2018 trying to listen to this album is something I... well, can't imagine. It's projects like this that really help me to appreciate to maturation of my music enjoyment, and make even more thankful to have a music outlet like this where I can continue to expand my interest.
It's impossible for me to begin talking about this album without ... read more
When can we start having the conversation of Little Simz being the best rapper in the world, male or female?
Really solid, nice job @BruhMan! I have to mention though, the flow starting at 1:30 immediately stuck out to me as the exact same pattern Kendrick's Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe, was that intentional? I also agree with some of the other comments that the pacing switch was a little bit out of left field. Overall, I really enjoyed the guitar instrumental and the harmonies! Let me know when the EP drops.
Incredibly beautiful. Easily my favorite non-English album of the year to this point.
Had to see what all the excitement was about. I don't think I ever heard the original, and now I especially don't care to.
This is incredible, really. I'm excited that community will have something to decipher and debate for the foreseeable future. More thoughts will be coming soon, and I can't wait to hear this again.
I must say I was actually pretty hesitant giving this a 10 after first listen, but I’m past my third listen now and it feels incredibly justified. Quadeca really did it man, this is a masterpiece. I’ll likely be doing a long-form review on this one.
Thank you again to @UltimateLifeFrm for the recommendation! (2)
I've never seen Star Trek, nor really know anything about it. But picture the most massive Star Trek ship imaginable. Unfalthomably large from end to end, slowly inching through an black and desolate space wasteland. This is the soundtrack.
Thank you for the recommendation @UltimateLifeFrm!
This album is all over the place, in all the best ways possible. This record goes from feeling hot and brutal, to heavy, wet, and drenched, to serene and freeing, and then ends with... nothing. Quite literally 1:46 of silence. I was so confused how Magic Window had such a low score compared to the rest of the album, and now I know. I don't want to sound too artsy/snobby when I say this, but it's almost a fitting end to the experience. What ... read more
Joji is such an interesting case.
No one can deny this man’s talent. The number of hits he’s produced over the years is something you can’t overlook, and the fanbase he has helped cultivate for himself and his label 88rising is as strong as ever. But for me and many others, there’s always been something that has been enough of a flaw to prevent him from being taken entirely seriously.
There have always been Joji doubters. Haters. I think there always will be. His rise ... read more
Here's my theory for how this album came together.
Drake had some leftover material, or maybe a concept for something more after 'CLB' (which would be shocking for the amount of filler on that album). While in the studio with 21 for 'Honestly, Nevermind', he had him give some verses for these unfinished or unreleased songs, aaaand then that's about all. That's seemingly all the thought that went into this. I'm not a Drake fan but... he carried 21 Savage on this album. Every verse from 21 feels ... read more
This is the first time I've returned to this album since it's release nearly a year ago, and I feel a lot closer to neutral about it than before. 'From a Birds Eye View' is like trying to make a deep conceptual album, but finding out you have nothing to say.
I wouldn't be mad if someone said Black Thought was the best rapper of all time. I might even agree with them.
Favorite track: Red Death
Final verdict: Top tier production, and every feature contributes (there's a lot of them)/10
Obviously, the expectation heading into this album can't be to hear something of actual strong quality. I'm not expecting bbno$ to tell me of some rough upbringing, serious emotional struggle, social commentary, or anything remotely serious. I just want bouncy, fun beats with some funny lines and catchy hooks. Unfortunately, I don't think that even that low bar was reached during most of this album.
The first track "bag or die" was actually really surprising and quite enjoyable. ... read more
I always find it amazing that, in weeks of big name releases that I'm anticipating (T Swift, Carly, Arctic Monkeys), it's always something that was not even remotely on my radar that ends up being my favorite from the week.
Loyle Carner is not a name I've ever heard before until just a few days ago, but makes a strong case on this album to be someone to keep an eye on going forward. hugo is an incredibly sound listening experience from just the instrumental alone, though what else should I ... read more
One of the top comments on Fantano's review of The Car really spoke to me, and somewhat made me re-evaluate my initial reactions to this album.
From Youtube user Kingtownley12: "This album is like a roller coaster with no turns. No high speed. No loops. No drop."
Despite my initially pretty positive feelings towards the album, I couldn't help but admit this comment was really accurate. It's true that this record doesn't really go anywhere, and generally feels pretty one-note. What ... read more
I promise you I gave this album a fair shake. I'm not a hater. I listened to this like 3 times, please don't burn me at the stake Swifties.
Despite moderately anticipating this album, I think I knew I was in trouble even before listening to the first song. On Spotify, there's a video that seems to preface the album by describing some of the emotions Taylor was feeling while writing it. She lists five things that helped inspire the album, saying "The (number) thing that kept me up at night ... read more
Carly Rae Jepson returns on her sixth studio album, The Loneliest Time, with highly accessible synthpop music. The Queen of Pop once again shows she's on top of the world with her infectious melodies, some of my favorites being on Surrender My Heart, Talking to Yourself, and Beach House. Her voice is an odd pairing, sounding nasally and pinched, yet also light and breathy at the same time, leading to her having a very unique sound in my opinion. The biggest standout for me though is the great ... read more
Bill Callahan has a voice that, when you hear it, you stop and listen.
There is something about this man's voice that had me stopped in my tracks for moments on this album. Bill's lower register comes across as so effortless and comfortable, it's impressive. My favorite moments on this record were certainly when he played into those low notes. However, the first half was stronger than the second, and I was more so just content towards the end.
Favorite track: Bowevil
Final verdict: Callahan ... read more
