16 years after since i left you, the avalanches would return with a new, longer (by like 4 minutes) project that retains what made the first album so great. very vibey production with samples that compliment the songs without feeling forced in, it creates a really unique experience i haven't heard in any other discography. i will say this is weaker than sily since i wasn't huge on frankie sinatra at all (my least favorite song from any of their albums), but it's still an ... read more
beginning the avalances' journey, we have their 2000 debut album, and if this is a sign of things to come, i'm pretty excited. all of the 18 songs here are very fun vibes, with the samples being integrated quite well. the transitions are also very clean, which i appreciate as someone who enjoys listening to stuff like tim hecker's albums. i'll say that some of the samples can get pretty repetitive, but it doesn't really detract from my enjoyment of the project. i'm ... read more
tim hecker is one of my favorite artists currently releasing. so when sunset key melt dropped & this compilation was announced, my hopes were incredibly high... and yeah, this is excellent. even despite being leftovers from his movie soundtracks, they still have the atmosphere you would expect from him, and it's still very easy to get lost in the soundscapes presented throughout the 7 songs here. it's very telling that even an throwaway compilation still has a lot of love & ... read more
this album feels like it shouldn't exist. a lot of it is just the singles he released after the first walkerworld, with no real throughline, and no real interesting elements to any of the songs. then for some reason he just... gives up and puts in the first album's tracks minus the intro & outro. this is just an album that's not really interesting to talk about, just more radio-friendly slop that i'll forget about in a week. it doesn't really do anything outside of ... read more
i had no clue what to expect coming into this. i saw the 35 user score, and thought to myself, "it can't possibly be THAT bad." that hope quickly faded when i saw the song titles, and completely disappeared about two tracks in, because this is fucking awful. the singers here have 0 charisma, which makes listening experiences like i, vibrator even worse. on that topic, the songs here are extremely horny, which get rather creepy at points, and make for a very uncomfortable hour, ... read more
as a side project to the much heavier vein.fm, fleshwater retains some of that influence while doing enough to stand out and carve their own identity. going more down the shoegaze/alternative path, the instrumentation is great across the board, still having a lot of energy while not going all-out. anthony didio's vocals are also still as good on this project, along with the addition of female vocalist marisa shirar. anthony's clean vocals work surprisingly well off marisa's, and ... read more
as much as i enjoy nurture & worlds, this album unfortunately feels like a miss for me. i do respect porter for trying to get more emotional on the record, but the album didn't really latch onto me as much as his but other 2 did, along with some odd choices, such as a few of the lines through the album and the tts outro of russian roulette. it's not badly produced or sung at all, since i do like porter's voice, but just didn't really personally resonate with me.
this feels like an attempt to keep eminem's old style of offensive rap alive. however, it comes across more as 'old man tries to navigate the new generation'. at 51, eminem feels like a relic of the past, and the lyricism of stuff like stan is thrown out the window in favor of complaining about pronouns, trans people, 'woke bullshit' & mentally disabled people. eminem's flows also feel like he's going through the motions, not really elevating the songs ... read more
for her first 'adult' ep, all i could think while listening was 'that's it'? granted, it's far from the worst thing released this year (you guys seriously think this is worse than slut pop miami?), but this is a nothingburger of an ep. the production is as generic as you can get, jojo siwa is a pretty meh vocalist, and the lyrics are pretty cliche & sometimes stupid. the only real reason i can see anyone care about this ep is through karma, and even then, ... read more
this album feels like it just exists. a lot of the songs just feel rather uninteresting, and can be pretty abrasive at points. about half of it is middling dnb, with house, techno & dubstep attempts to try & add some variety. it's competently produced, but just kinda falls flat, and those are the worst kind of albums: the ones that don't really give you much to say
some albums feel like style over substance. although i did like this album a lot when i first listened to it, upon relistening, it kinda fell into that category for me. throughout this album, there's some amazing sound design. objectively, mr. bill is a pretty good producer, with very clean mixing. however, the album can feel pretty bloated at times, with 18 songs clocking in at exactly 1 hour. with this, several songs feel like just a pit stop to flex the sound design, which can lead to ... read more
bringing a blend of melodic & hard-hitting, no mana's debut monstercat album manages to maintain the highs he set with his first three singles on the label. even though justify & underwater feel a bit flat & don't have much energy to them, the rest of the album flourishes with the usual no mana style of chiptune-inspired electro, all with pretty good results. i also really enjoy the vocal performances throughout the album, as they help bring a lot to it. in the end, no ... read more
this album is not good whatsoever. for an album released in 2018, it feels way more outdated than it really should. it sounds a lot more like it came from an amateur dubstep producer in 2013. along with poor production, break away, grace & stardust are the exact same songs with no variation other than their titles, along with insight & electric love also being the same. that means over 1/5th of this album literally shouldn't exist since they're duplicates. i really hope ... read more
i'm split on this album. the first half is pretty catchy, and it's nice seeing billie evolve past the times of minimal bassy production & semi-monotone vocals. however, outside of blue, the second half doesn't really catch my attention in terms of production, although the vocals are consistently good. it's nowhere near the worst record this year, and when the album hits it really does hit, but tracks 6-9 drag this down to just being decent for me
although the 21-song tracklist can feel a bit bloated, even the lesser songs on the album still sound pretty good thanks to kaytranada's groovy production & the vocalists/rappers he brings along. this album works pretty well for me, i think the only thing that i can point out is that they didn't need to split it into two discs lol
while not reaching the highs of worlds, it still has everything that made that album good: impactful & gorgeous production, impeccable atmospheres & solid performances all throughout. i don't like it as much as worlds despite having no outliers like fellow feeling, but it's still something i would recommend
quite a gorgeous album from beginning to end, and where porter really began to shine as a producer. although fellow feeling is a pretty rough song, the rest have really pretty production, as well as stellar vocal performances throughout. while not perfect, this is still an enjoyable record, and a must listen for any edm fan
by combining pianos, synths & glitches, along with the usual tim hecker seamless transitions, this album manages to create a pretty cool atmosphere that takes you on an hourlong journey without ever including vocals or drums. probably tim's best album, and one that shows he's a force to be reckoned with when it comes to ambient music
cloudnone x direct is a collab that never misses, and kazukii has had some pretty good stuff, so put them together, and the result is a fantastic house song. there's some real groove in the drops, and the melody holds up extremely well throughout the whole song. i'm excited to see where this 'dream running records' label goes
