Beach House - Bloom
80

Bloom is an album that, while maybe not being the most energetic or eye catching album I've heard, is one that is consistently peaceful and nice to hear. It never pushes too far outside of its boundaries, but it knows what its good at, and for about 52ish minutes (not including a large chunk of the silence in Irene) it's just a serene and beautiful experience. Great to just have on the background, and that album art particularly just adds even more to the vibe. Just... ... read more

The Cure - Songs of a Lost World
85

This album is honestly just a big delight to listen to from start to finish, even if I do think it definitely can feel a little drawn out from time to time. The guitar work here is absolutely phenomenal, the melodies and atmospheres are really on point, and the vocal work is mostly pretty solid. The middle particularly though is absolutely phenomenal, and really spotlights just how good the guitar and energy is when The Cure is really going all out. Honestly, just a really consistently great ... read more

Tyler, The Creator - CHROMAKOPIA
75

This is my first Tyler album, and I gotta say, I'm pretty impressed with the creativity on display here! Rap isn't my favorite genre (FAR from it) but I have found myself really really enjoying artists like JPEGmafia and Portraits of Tracy (who was heavily inspired by Tyler!) so I was pretty interested. This is a super creative album with a lot of insane flows and lyricism on display, and while I can't say every single song here was my thing, there was a lot here that was! The ... read more

Virtual Riot - Stealing Fire
55

Stealing Fire as a whole, is a pretty unremarkable album to me. For someone who really loves how diverse and colorful Virtual Riot can be, and how interesting his sound design can be, this album feels filled a lot of played out heavy ideas, lacking in the melodic colorful melodies VR is usually known for, instead going for a more generic "live banger energy" vibe that feels long and drawn out on this album. I can kinda see what the intent was here, and to give it some credit, ... read more

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - "NO TITLE AS OF 13 FEBRUARY 2024 28,340 DEAD"
90

This is GY!BE's most down to earth and intense album yet, and for good reason considering the source of the album. It goes between hopeful and dreadful, very much aligning with the current political climate in the Israel and Palestine war. To be wholeheartedly honest, I don't much about that situation as I have not really kept super up to date, but from what I do know, this is a great retrospective look into the horrors of the situation.

In terms of the album itself, I mean, ... read more

Charli xcx - Brat and it's completely different but also still brat

lol this is like a low quality remix package of brat that doesn’t really improve on it in any specific way, and I don’t even like brat anyways

Wallows - Model

This album definitely to some extent feels a little undercooked, despite my love for a few of the songs on it. I think it starts off pretty strong with some really catchy beats, but the latter half of the album definitely falls off a bit and becomes less interesting. Still, this is a fun indie pop album, and I honestly can't fault it for what it is as an album that feels a bit like a warm embrace. Definitely could've been better, but I like it!

Kero Kero Bonito - Time 'n' Place

This is very pleasant experience! It's pretty consistently nice from beginning to end, with some somewhat strange decisions at times dragging it down a bit for me, but also making it pretty unique which I respect a lot. I don't think I have a whole lot to say about this album, but it has a lot going for it and I appreciate what it does. An overall very unique and fun experience, even if not every decision the album made with its production really landed for me.

Magdalena Bay - Mercurial World

This is a pretty great experience, even if it leans on the less interesting side at times. The synthy style here is juicy and infectious, with it at its best being really exciting, and even at its worst still being fairly good. This album is definitely lacking a lot of character and theming compared to their later album this year, but it's still a very good time that I appreciate lot for what it is, and has some really cool style to it!

Jamie xx - In Waves

I mean, this album is alright. It's a nice vibe, has solid atmosphere, can't say there's anything to strongly fault about it, but I can't say I have much to say about it either. It's nice, and there are some big highlights, but definitely something you kinda just put on the background and experience, rather than something I desperately want to come back to. A solid set of house tracks all in all, but definitely feels somewhat forgettable as a whole.

WILLOW - <COPINGMECHANISM>

This album was a big surprise hit for me! The energy on display here is really fun, Willow's vocal work is absolutely superb, and there's a surprising amount of variety and enjoyment to be had despite its very short 29 minute length. Willow feels like she really put her all into making these songs happen, and while I think it does falter a bit in the latter half with a few songs, it ends fairly strongly, and the first half is superb, energetic joy to listen to. Just a great ... read more

I don't have really a whole lot to say about this album, it's very good all around and has a lot of nice grunge to the guitar work that is quite satisfying throughout! I think perhaps it overstays its welcome a bit, feeling a bit less interesting through the second half (though it also doesn't help that the second half has a good chunk of weaker less interesting songs) but as a whole, this is well put together and pretty fun to listen to, and the melodies often hit quite nicely. ... read more

Tiffany Day - LOVER TOFU FRUIT

Thank you Instagram ads for introducing to this wonderful artist, this album is a lot of fun to listen to! The highs on this album are so high, with a wonderful set of diversity on the tracks ranging from nice indie pop to garage to bass house that reminds me of Charli XCX sometimes. While not every song really works with its experimentation, I appreciate this album doing its best to be as engaging as it can with a short time, and Tiffany's voice is just heavenly all throughout. I do think ... read more

Anna von Hausswolff - The Miraculous

This album is a bit of a toss up for me. As a huge fan of Anna's album after this one, "Dead Magic", I came into this one with pretty high expectations, but left feeling like Dead Magic was an upgrade to this in pretty much every way. Not to say this album is bad, it has a lot of the same DNA as Dead Magic with a lot of the same organ and vocal work and guitar work that I really loved with that album, and as an experience it works fairly well, but I feel like its a lot more drawn ... read more

Zedd - Telos
85

Telos from Zedd is an interesting time. In terms of other albums in the EDM space, this has some of the best cohesiveness and flow that I've ever heard, with some incredibly well done transitions, and the songs really feeling like they flow amazingly well into one another. I also really appreciate the variety on this album, every song here ends up feeling fairly distinct while also not being too far from the base "Zedd" feeling. The production also, for the most part, is very ... read more

Sabrina Carpenter - Short n' Sweet

This album... exists! It's pretty cringe at times, and honestly is just pretty forgettable all around, but it's alright I guess. I really don't have much to even say about this. It's a barebones basic pop album that occasionally dips into some really fun sounds, but it's also very safe, and has some pretty awful lyrics at times. Some highlights from time to time, but I wouldn't ever come back to this.

Magdalena Bay - Imaginal Disk

I honestly went into this not expecting a lot, but SHEEESH, Magdalena Bay goes for a retro synth-y tech style here, and they absolutely NAIL it. The vibes and sound design on this song are so shockingly unique and special, with such a crazy amount of variety despite sticking to the synthpop style all throughout (though occasionally dipping into rock or more psychedelic styles, which is VERY welcome). I really can't praise the instrumentals and production enough, it carries this thing from ... read more

Billie Eilish - Happier Than Ever
75

Happier Than Ever feels to me like an evolution of Billie's first album, with a lot of the same styles to me, just more of them and a lot more refined. I think there's a bit of charm to the first album that isn't here as much, but this is so much more consistently good and it has more highs, so as a whole I do prefer it. That being said, this album falls into a similar problem for me of just having a lot of weirder spots that drag down the album a bit for me, and while I ... read more

かめりあ [Camellia] - Tera I/O
60

When this album is great, it's SO great. The best songs on this album are the ones that really divert from Camellias usual kinda bland style at this point, and really try something wacky or weird. The problem with this album is that those moments feel kinda few and far between, and I think this features some of Camellias most bland work. It's not really bad, there's nothing inherently terrible here, but I only really desperately wanna come back to a few of these. Still, pretty ... read more

Radiohead - Pablo Honey

I just have nothing interesting to say about this album, and while it's not really the worst thing ever, I kind of just find it so incredibly uninteresting and bland that it begins to frustrate me. I'm glad this wasn't my first experience with Radiohead, cause this would've turned me away from them really heavily. Found myself basically wanting to skim by the last few tracks, because it really just starts to feel like any other dumb random set of songs I'd hear on some ... read more
