One of the most consistent rap projects of the year, production is heavenly and WifiGawd brings so much charisma to each track. Such a great blend of newer plugg sounds with 2010's Chief Keef energy. If you've enjoyed Wifi from his projects with Tony Seltzer definitely give this a listen.
Overall a fun collection of gorgeous and futuristic R&B and pop from Twigs but holy shit Meta Angel is like the greatest song of all time!!!
A nice little short project of fun pop rap from Aminé, TWOPOINTFIVE is an infectious listen that sees him expanding the pallet of his production choices to include more bright and bubbly pop and electronic elements. Sure it's not all that deep, but I admire Aminé for making fun enjoyable and easygoing music. While not reaching the heights of Limbo, TWOPOINTFIVE is worth a listen!
A short but sweet project of tracks with great beats and infinite personality via the musings of Zack Fox. Fafo, Bane and the title track are legitimately great rap songs and all the other tracks are fun and entertaining. Also, Zacks' rapping is legitimately great here. Good first project!
While no track reaches the heights of Nobles from the first EP, This Thing of Ours Vol 2 is still an enjoyable little journey of great production and some great verses. Miracle Baby and 6 Five Heartbeats are my favorite tracks and will likely be on rotation for a while for me.
A near perfect vision of pop, so glad that all Mag Bay has been doing over the past years is finally getting recognition and that it's with an album as amazing as this!
The little autotuned, "yeah!" adlibs from Negative Gemini that pop up throughout absolutely send me! Loving the sound of this track, really feels like a progression of what George was doing on Slide but goes into a glitchier direction. Great single!
My favourite Gunn project, the production on HWH7 is amazing. It's Possible, Lucha Bros, Banana Yacht?! So many amazing sounding tracks and great verses from everybody featured.
I think I prefer the sheer punch of Free IH, but still, this is one of the most enjoyable indie rock albums of the year.
The best N.E.R.D songs that N.E.R.D never made. Seriously, girls like drugs could easily slip in on the Spymob version of In Search Of and BULLSEYE sounds like a punkier version of a No One Ever Really Dies track but these are so much fun. Excited to see what they'll do on a full length project but for now this EP will be on repeat for me.
This is an easy 100, I don't think I've ever heard anything like it and I just hope this will influence more hip-hop, rock and electronic acts to push boundaries. Injury Reserve have been one of my favourite musical groups since Drive It Like It's Stolen dropped in 2017 and I was introduced to them. I was wowed by their 2019 self-titled album which is one of my favourite hip-hop albums of the past 5 years but coming off of that album I did not expect they could put together something like ... read more
Accidentally deleted my original review whilst trying to update it :(
But heck, Nurture keeps growing on me and I keep getting more and more immersed in it with every listen. I feel myself growing a strong emotional attachment to all the tracks and I think it may be my favorite album of the year so far!
Also the vinyl sounds incredible, makes the warmth of the album hit even harder.
While the title track feels like an interesting moment for Skrillex, and a necessary point of transition between the brash sounds of the Bangarang EP and what he would go on to do with Recess, this EP feels really flat. The Reason is a serviceable but ultimately mediocre track and Scary Bolly Dub is another pointless remix of Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites. The change in sound on the Leaving EP is more interesting than the music itself.
Ah yes the Bangarang EP, a project which further boosted Skrillex's profile in the mainstream and was in everybody's iTunes library on their iPod Touch 4th gens. While this is a nostalgic listen for sure, and sonically it's aged maybe better than Scary Monsters, this EP could be considered a bit of a mixed bag when compared to it's predecessor.
The opener Right In is classic Skrillex and packs a punch, with some great synth work within the drops. This is followed by the title track, an iconic ... read more
Not sure if there's even a need to review or rate this, as it's essentially 2 new tracks and a collection of remixes, but First of The Year (Equinox) is a great track that's incredibly nostalgic and also goes hard as hell to this day. Ruffneck (Flex) and Ruffneck (FULL Flex) are serviceable, even though they kind of cancel each other out. The remixes are mediocre at best.
The EP that changed it all! Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites was a game-changer for Skrillex and is a project that is incredibly nostalgic for a lot of people now. This was a lot of people's gateway into Skrillex, dubstep and EDM as a whole and it's held up really well in my opinion.
The first 3 tracks are absolute dumb perfection, with Rock N Roll taking the sounds Skrill had been building with his first project and unleashing them in full force, with a faster tempo, harder wubs and more ... read more
Fuck it, Skrillex marathon...
For some reason lately I've felt compelled to dive back into the discography of one of the most polarizing producers of the 2010's, and one of my childhood heroes, Skrillex. Love him or hate him, it's no denying that he changed the scene of commercial electronic music forever with his trademark sound of wubs, bleeps and screeches, that would come to be known by the public as dubstep (despite being vastly different to the UK subgenre that the name originated in). ... read more
Criminally underrated track, was on a nostalgic Skrillex binge last night and forgot he came out with this last year and it might just be his best song. A brilliant future garage track that harkens back to his influences, but with the prominent vocal samples and rumbling bass it still manages to evoke the feelings of classic Skrillex tracks but in a more mature and melencholic way. Brilliant stuff.
