All We Need is one of my favorite albums from the past few years, a beautifully executed blending of folk and hip-hop that honestly should have blown up more and sustained a career for Raury, but alas it didn't perform well, so he retreated into the woods, away from the music industry for his follow up. The Woods was decent, but Fervent sees Raury taking the final step into his evolution as a folk artist. Soft acoustics, simple melodies, echoey vocals, this is Raury at his most melancholic and ... read more
California English may be one of the best, most wacked out, fucking nuts Vampire Weekend tracks and I'm only writing this review because it deserves more attention.
Oh yeah and Contra is basically an indie classic at this point, great album!
I'm late to reviewing this, mainly because it took me many listens to this album to come to the ultimate conclusion that it was a disappointment :(
By no means is this a bad album, in fact it contains some brilliant tracks and solid verses from Danny, with his humorous wordplay shining through. But by god this album as a whole goes in one ear and out the other real fast. Many critics state that this is Danny Brown rapping in a more matured fashion and lyrically yes it is, but vocally he just ... read more
88rising managed to deliver a fun, cohesive, entertaining compilation here for the most part! While the first Head In The Clouds was all over the place, featuring lots of generic trap styled tracks mixed with some shimmery but flat R&B, this sequel feels like it has more of an identity. Across the tracks here the various artists from the label deliver sugary pop and R&B jams with plenty of sun-drenched summer atmosphere and futuristic vibes. NIKI and Rich Brian stand out on every track ... read more
Is it as bad as some people are saying? Not by any stretch of the means. Nine is a decent effort from Blink to try and create something that feels risky and interesting for their discography, but ultimately it kinda just comes off as boring and generic mainly. Their stale pop-punk formulas don't blend too well against the electronic kick and almost trap flair of certain songs and let's face it, the group is clearly trying to grab the attention of a new demographic. But if I were to give this ... read more
So after hearing him featured on Igor and Ginger and hearing nothing but praise for Slowthai i finally decided to educate myself and check out his debut album Nothing Great About Britain. I know I'm late to the train on this one but holy shit this was an impressive listen! Throughout this album the production is consistently flawless, blending trap styled hip-hop with some gloomy electronics and an occasionally off-kilter edge in a unique and refreshing way. The rapping from Slowthai is ... read more
This exceeded the hype despite half the album basically being released as singles, Charli is easily one of the best pop records of the year! With her, Lana Del Rey and Taylor Swift all dropping great albums, could 2019 be the comeback year of the mega pop star?
Holy shit, the disappointment lived up to the hype, in fact it exceeded it! Damnnnnn Peggy
EDIT: from 95 to 100. On my 6th full listen of the album it fully clicked, there isn't a moment on this album that doesn't blow me away, the production is so beautiful and diverse but so cohesive. Peggy's raps are as hard hitting as ever and his singing on the album is surprisingly great the majority of the time. It's one of those albums that you have to experience as whole to fully grasp and enjoy. ... read more
Slap after slap after slap! Paramore's first journey into alt and pop rock sounds is probably my favourite album by them. Despite the 17 track length, they manage to keep things fresh with each song, going from more punky moments such as Now and Anklebiters, to amazing pop tunes like Ain't It Fun and Still Into You, to anthemic power pop on (One of Those) Crazy Girls, which sounds like something that could've been on Weezer's Pinkerton. The self-titled album is a brilliant collection of tunes ... read more
While this track is an obvious B-side, the production is still amazing, futuristic and low key. Ritchie's opening verse thingy drags a bit, but the random bursts of autotuned vocal riffing were gripping and serene. Peggy demolishes his verse and Groggs wraps things up with a solid verse at the end. Injury Reserve prove they are still amazing!
I wanted this to be good, I liked Stoney a lot when it first came out and was slightly dissapointed with Beerbongs and Bentleys but still enjoyed a lot of tracks from it, but Hollywood's Bleeding is just not it chief. This album starts strong with the first three tracks, particularly the intro and Enemies with Dababy which set this up to be an interesting listen. But then we get to the rest of the album, full of generic lifeless trap bangers, awkward attempts at indie pop and 2000s rock tracks, ... read more
EDIT: 80 to 87, i find myself coming back to Forever Turned Around more than a lot of other indie albums this year. Sure it's not a masterpiece but damn this is a great collection of catchy somber jams!
I discovered Whitney a year ago with their Light Upon the Lake demos collection and found myself enjoying their breezy folk pop aesthetic here and there. On Forever Turned Around the duo continue to make beautifully simple and memorable tunes, with an odd sense of melancholy and nostalgia at ... read more
I'm so glad I managed to listen to none of the singles for NFR before the album dropped because holy shit this thing hit me as a complete package! Each track so beautifully complements the next and is backed up by some of the most mature song writing we've ever gotten from Lana. I liked Lust for Life a fair bit, but that felt like an overblown collection of random tracks, this is an amazing, heartfelt, cohesive album. From the piano focused ballads, to the somewhat folky vibe certain tracks ... read more
I'm impressed! After the awful yet somewhat of a guilty pleasure album Reputation, Taylor has returned to form on Lover. While it jumps around different sounds and styles of pop frequently and could be considered messy, each track delivers on what it sets out to do. These are all cheesy love songs and Taylor plays them as exactly that. This feels like an evolved version of Red with it's blend of styles, however leans more towards the synth-pop sensibilities of 1989 and proves to be just as ... read more
Came for the 20 second Carti feature and to see if the Yachty tracks were fun, left with absolutely nothing except the definition of trap blandness. It seems like the whole roster was phoning it in for this release. Migos usually provide some fun bangers, Yachty has occasional moments of brilliance and even Lil Baby can be entertaining, but here? Nah
The center of this album won't and doesn't hold, a letdown to say the least. Some of the production is nice though, shoutout to St Vincent! But yeah ultimately a very mixed bag, bleh
Vibey but ultimately very pointless, simply made as a promotion. Glad Chaz is getting that smartwater bank, but this was very lifeless. I'd say it's a major let down after Outer Peace but it's a promo EP so i can't complain too much
NOW THIS FUCKING SLAPSSSS!!! I did not expect this from The 1975 at all, even as my favorite modern band I never thought they'd ever make a song this heavy and oh my god did it deliver. Matty sounds manic on this track driving home the protest-esque lyrics. It definitely seems like Notes is going to be their most political record to date and if it's delivered this well with every track then sign me the fuck up!!
This was definitely an interesting listen. One of the oddest things the Brockhampton boys have released, every track is solid in it's own right, but the tracklists sequencing just seems a little off. In terms of positives, No Halo, Sugar and Boy Bye was the perfect three track stretch to open the record and Sugar may be a BH classic! Other standouts include Dearly Departed, with a heartbrakingly honest verse from Dom that steals the show. The title track is fun and Love Me For Life delivered ... read more
