This was a fantastic debut album! HMLTD come through with a cohesive yet eclectic series of genre-blending jams. Post-punk, glam, folk, pop, trap, there are so many sounds on this album that are all mashed together with expert skills to create a unique and apocalyptic sound that feels fresh. Henry Spychalski's vocals here are fucking amazing and sound incredibly unhinged at points as he belts out lyrics that feel smart, edgy and comedic without ever coming across as pretentious or hard to take ... read more
Halsey ditched most of the typical Halsey-isms that have plagued her past releases and the result is an album that feels personal and eclectic, while still feeling uniquely Halsey. Clementine, I Hate Everybody, Finally // Beautiful Stranger and 929 are some of not only the best prouduced pop songs of the year but the best written. Manic is an open book and the way Halsey frames these tracks comes across as relatable and somber compared to the pretentious antics found on Badlands and HFK. Even ... read more
What a great record to start 2020! Poppy's heavy, genre-blending, pop fuckery on this album is amazing. From the heavy metal guitars and strong NIN influences, to the brilliant upbeat synth laced sections, all pulled together creatively and kept cohesive by Poppy's voice and lyrics, being more aggressive but also more human and honest than ever! I understand why some critics would see this album as a gimmick, but in the lawless scene of 2020 in a post 1000 gecs world, the deconstruction of ... read more
Brilliant album I'm so happy I discovered recently. Ravenna has been intriguing me with her newer singles but I wasn't aware she had a complete body of work out and it's a brilliant, dark, vibey pop record with amazing often trap based production and good songwriting. Great stuff!
MGMT are independent now and continuing with the gothic sounds they somewhat explored on Little Dark Age but now with a more organic sound. Love the synths and piano work! The bass line sounds very grungy and Nirvana-esque which was interesting and adds to the aesthetic of the tune. Hope they can follow through with an album in this style.
Holy shit this single has me ready for The Slow Rush, it's like the perfect combo of the individual vibes Lonerism and Currents give off! The first half is very dense and quite gothic for Tame Impala standards, with some fantastic build ups and amazing transitions. The second half I may prefer, a vibey piece focusing on atmosphere and Kevin's vocal melodies. It sounds like Currents with the hip-hop influenced drum loop but like, it's even better!
While I loved Patience (which sadly won't be ... read more
Bronson is back in proper form, these Alc beats are great, awesome stuff
The first Gorillaz album sounds like the soundtrack to every PS2 racing games garage screen, but that ain't a bad thing. While the group would later explore a more vast palette of sounds, there are plenty of great tracks here on the self-titled. Re-Hash, Tomorrow Comes Today, Punk, 19-2000, all slappers! My only issue with this album comes with the repetitive-ness of a few of the deep cuts. This project has a cohesive but kind of samey sound it goes for on most tracks and there are a couple ... read more
This album is essentially what the Adventure Time soundtrack would sound like as a darkwave pop album about the depression and the experience of being trans, it fucking slaps! The strained and almost spoken word vocal styling here may not be for everyone but if you can get past it I'd highly recommend Emergency, one of the best unearthed gems of the past few years.
Best tracks: California Wine, Black Crow, World Dissolving Into Slime ASMR
Worst track: DNA (the beat kinda annoys me)
Discovered this project one night as a recommendation on Spotify, had no clue it was Sputnik until I had finished listening 3 times. Lola's Pocket PC is a surprisingly ethereal listen, very spacey and lo-fi but tackles the realm of synth-pop instead of the noisey emo found on Come In (a fantastic album from this year released by Sputnik under the name Weatherday). Back to front this project is a vibe yet an engaging one, with the melodies always subtley witching up and remaining fresh ... read more
Another fantastic pop album for 2019, this year keeps on giving with an onslaught of great releases! I'm glad Hannah finally has a body of work out even if most of the songs here we've heard before. They still all slap in a very calming way. Invisible is my jam! Great stuff!
(The second half of Concrete Angel tho :3)
Wish it was easy to put into words the feelings these past few Mount Eerie projects have given me. Here, Phil continues the themes and stories of grief, over not just his late wife but also a recent divorce after remarrying. These simple slow acoustic pieces, along with Phil's incredibly emotive writing and Julie Doiron's lush locals create an album that's hard to turn your ears away from. There's a certain sense of dark hope this album gives off, perhaps given that Phil isn't just alone to ... read more
This grew on me so much! At first i was quite underwhelmed by Steve's debut, feeling it seemed very basic and kind of bland. But after loving his contributions to Father of The Bride and listening to that album heaps this year i randomly stumbled upon Apollo XXI in my Spotify feed and gave it a listen. Something clicked, this is really great! The raw sense of funk combined with Steve's knack for great hooks and fun vocals made this an awesome album to jam out to in my car. Looking forward to ... read more
Really enjoyed this final official release of Soul Trash, a mixtape Chaz dropped originally on Dropbox back in January. This release has a differing track-list to that version, but still the projects acts as an awesome showcase of his hip-hop side, featuring blissful psychedelic beats often layered with washed out trap percussion with sung/rapped verses drenched in auto-tune for a hazy and atmospheric effect. It's like Chaz took some of the soundscapes and ethos from previous Toro projects and ... read more
There's so many damn great albums coming out this year wtf?!
(Face To Face is my jaaaaaaammmmmmmm!!!)
Beautiful, an amazing cacophony of sounds and genres, Bedroom Community and Neon Glow are some of the best songs I've heard all year, they enter my fucking skin. Near flawless album and I'm so excited for whatever Glass Beach have in store for the future! So glad I got put onto this.
