Going into this, to say I was nervous would be an understatement. After releasing five different albums in a single year, all of which ranging from amazing to just okay, then taking a year off to release this, I was honestly not expecting this to live up to the hype. But I am so very glad that I was extremely wrong. I do think it's a bit early to say this, but I think this may be one of my favourite King Gizzard records - not yet my very favourite, but top three.
I know that I say this for ... read more
I went into this knowing that this wouldn't be anywhere near as close to the phenomenal work of art that is their second album, but this is still a masterpiece in it's own right that deserves a hell of a lot more attention than it's getting.
On the surface, Sings Reign Rebuilder sounds like an eerie work of art, and that is exactly what it is. It seems that this was the sound Set Fire To Flames went with both of their official records. However, after doing some research, this whole album just ... read more
Only King Gizzard can release five albums in one year and have two of them be 9/10.
I feel like there's not much else I could bring to the table here that hasn't already been said. This is such an enjoyable album and is by far their most clean and accessible record from 2017. But the main problem with this album lies with the fact that it lacks cohesion. Despite this fact, I feel like I enjoyed this more than most of their 2017 work, and most of their other projects in general. I genuinely ... read more
I don't know, it's okay, I guess? Polygondwanaland, while I liked the sound for the most part and didn't really dislike anything on it, didn't really do much for me. Unlike most of King Gizzard's previous albums, it didn't grab my attention all that much and honestly just feels forgettable. Other than a couple of really good stand-out tracks, there just isn't much making me want to revisit this. I dunno, maybe with repeated listens I will like this more, but at the moment I just don't care for ... read more
Edit: As much as I still love this album, I don't return to this nearly as much as I hoped, or nearly as much as I do other albums which I gave the original rating to.
Original Score: 90
What the actual fuck is this? I love this so much, I have no words.
I want to preface this by saying that I'm not too much of a hip-hop fan, and I rarely give any hip-hop records anything above an 8 because it just isn't a genre that I care about. Even my favourite hip-hop albums are ones that I rarely find ... read more
I didn't have high expectations for this album, and I ended up get exactly what I expected. Sketches Of Brunswick East is a decent record that I can't say is exactly bad, but it isn't great either. This feels like one of the least enjoyable King Gizzard record and really doesn't have a lot going for it. While it does have a nice sound, it's just bland and forgettable. There's nothing I can find that could possibly warrant repeated listens, it's just a very okay album that's inoffensive but one ... read more
Goddammit, King Gizz! Just when I thought you guys couldn't get any better, you had to throw this monstrosity at me!
Murder Of The Universe has such a loud and entertaining sound that had me captivated right from the start. The concept behind this record is also incredibly fun, being a story that you would see in a B-list monster movie. Every single track on here adds to the story and it is all needed: there is absolutely no filler. I do feel like pretty much all of the songs should have been ... read more
Yet another incredibly fun King Gizzard record. Flying Microtonal Banana is a really enjoyable experience with not too much bad about it and I found that I ended up loving most of it. My main grievance with this album is that a few tracks were too long for my liking. Not all of them, though. I'm not usually someone who dislikes it when a song is five, six, seven minutes long, but a couple of them just stand out as uninteresting. I absolutely adored Rattlesnake (the longest track on the record), ... read more
Nonagon Infinity is one of the most fun and addictive albums I've heard in a while. This album is just bop after bop. Every single track on here is just filled with crazy energetic instrumentals that had me invested for the full duration. This is definitely one of King Gizzard's best works yet. I still wouldn't say it's as good as I'm In Your Mind Fuzz, but that's just me.
Favourite Tracks: Mr. Beat; Robot Stop; Wah Wah; Gamma Knife; Evil Death Roll
Least Favourite Track: People-Vultures
Edit: It's shit like this that convinced me to go back and go on a re-review spree in the first place. I gave this an insanely high score, and whenever I looked back at my old ratings I'd see this and always think to myself "Oh yeah, that exists. What was it like again?" I genuinely couldn't for the life of me remember a single moment from this album. So I decided that because I'm re-reviewing a ton of albums anyway, why not throw this one in with the mix? I just got half-way through ... read more
I am SLIGHTLY disappointed, but not too much. Out of the records I've heard, this is my least favourite from Flying Lotus. You're Dead, while not bad by any stretch of the imagination, just isn't as fun or interesting as his previous projects. I mean, Flying Lotus is an instrumental artist, but the features on here were easily the best part and the songs with them on ended up being the most enjoyable tracks on the album. I also really struggle to say that I love anything on this album, which is ... read more
Another really fun King Gizzard album. Paper Mâché Dream Balloon is their seventh album and is often overlooked. While it isn't my favourite from them, it doesn't seem to get the same recognition as some of their other projects.
The instrumentals on this are absolutely wholesome and do a great job at making the listener feel happy. However, the lyrics are an amazing contradiction to this. It's something that you may not actually pick up on on first listen because you would get lost ... read more
I want to start this off by saying that I love the concept. The idea of an album with only four tracks and all of them being exactly one-quarter of the total duration is extremely interesting and unique and made me very curious to see how it would be performed. Unfortunately, I personally feel like it was executed quite poorly. It became very apparent very quickly that these tracks wouldn't be able to hold my attention for the full ten minutes of their length. It was also clear that some of ... read more
King Gizzard's fifth album is definitely my favourite from them so far. I'm In Your Mind Fuzz is just 42 minutes of pure, unadulterated fun. Every single song on here was just so enjoyable that it's impossible not to love this album. With amazing instrumentals and a noisy and in your face sound, this is definitely an album that lives up to it's title.
I guess the only thing that I have left to say, and this is something that I know has been said before me, but the first four tracks are just one ... read more
When the meme parody of a "comedic" song is not only more funny but also more listenable.
King Gizzard's fourth album is the first one so far that I don't really care about. While far from terrible, I just didn't feel much enjoyment from this. It shows off more of the same sound as some of their previous albums, but it just feels a lot less interesting. Although there are some truly great tracks scattered here and there, I feel like the more forgettable ones are much more prominent, and it doesn't help that there are a couple of just boring songs.
Favourite Tracks: Hot Wax; It's ... read more
Edit 2: Fuck it, I've listened to this four times already and this has already become one of my favourite albums. This is truly an experience.
Edit 1: The more I listen to this, the more I love it.
Original Score: 98
Time for an unnecessary explanation as to how I found this! As all things are discovered, I found this through searching the internet at 3am on a Saturday morning. I saw all the high ratings and the reviews talking about how nightmarish this is and figured this would be right up ... read more
Until The Quiet Comes is yet another amazing Flying Lotus record that I wouldn't say is quite as good as Cosmogramma but definitely comes pretty damn close. The one thing that I would say is better on this album than that one is that it did have a lot more tracks that I found fun. In fact, I would say that I liked pretty much all of the songs on here. The only real problem I have with this is that it didn't blow me away the same way Cosmogramma - or even Los Angeles for that matter - did. ... read more
King Gizzard's third album ends up being their best release so far. I love pretty much everything on here, and I would go as far as to say that most of the tracks on here are my favourite King Gizzard song out of the records that I've heard so far. In particular, Head On/Pill completely blew me away with how great it was. This is definitely an album that I can see myself coming back to a lot.
However, I do feel like the ending was a bit underwhelming. The last two tracks in particular didn't ... read more
I really don't understand all the love this is getting. Maybe I just don't get it? Maybe it just isn't for me? I don't know.
KÁRYYN's debut album The Quanta Series feels more like a chore to listen to than a fun listen. It's just so slow and uneventful that it bored me right from the first track, and I'm usually very open minded when going into something like this. I do think that this is more of a problem with me, though, as I do very much prefer loud music, so this quiet sound really ... read more
