this is a very easy album to listen to, there is something to be said about that. however, i do think it may be slightly overrated. obviously the big songs on this are cemented in music history forever, but songs like songbird and oh daddy leave some more to be desired. i do love the theme and backstory of this album though.
the songwriting is great, the vocals are great, but where this loses me is that every song is so anecdotal to the point where i have a hard time connecting to it.
THIS GOES STUPID HARD. INTERESTING SOUNDS. GREAT LULLS IN ENERGY WHEN NECESSARY. THE EXPERIMENTATION WORKS. THE ONLY DOWNFALL IS THE FIRST DROP OF THE ALBUM HAD SO MUCH POTENTIAL AND FELL SHORT.
I gave this back to back listens. The first listen wasn't great. The second one was bit better. The last 3 songs are definitely the most palatable. For the most part this goes over my head, even following along with the lyrics, I wasn't really sure what was going on. Maybe something will click if I revisit it again, but for now it just seems like a very average experimental project to me.
mid. a few good tracks in Better Than I Know Myself, Perfume, and Ode to a Conversation Stuck in Your Throat but other than that everything else feels very one dimensional and pretty bland. Not that it was bad it was just pretty forgettable.
i never really gave hozier a thought, i remember hearing take me to church when it came out and thinking yeah thats solid and never really thought about him since then. I suppose i thought, "hes got this massive radio song on his debut album, surely the whole album wont hold up." but wow, i've been proven wrong. great vocalist, great highs and lows, would recommend. jackie and wilson is a banger of a track.
for some reason i grew up being told will.i.am was some kind of music genius. it seems i was lied to. not cohesive at all, super predictable and generic lyrics. sounds like he was just throwing shit together in hopes that at least one song would get some radio plays. this makes LMFAO's Party Rock sound like Dark Side of the Moon. i tried to find some redeeming quality here, but considering there were about 20 producers and 40 writers for this, it feels like there was wasn't a single collective ... read more
it seems that pop music was going through an awkward puberty stage at the same time that i was. ill rate it the age i was when i could actually enjoy this.
so weird, after the first listen i was ready to give this something in the 60's BUT i listened to it a second time through and im starting to see the appeal. some of the songs still dont really click for me but the second listen was a lot more fun.
this thing sucks, maybe if i listened to it in 76 i'd have a difference of opinion. this whole thing sounded like the same song. thank god its only 29 minutes. if you want to hear the title of the song repeated over and over with the same drum patterns for half an hour, i highly recommend.
based on the other reviews, i think im really missing something here. just didnt connect for me
this one brings me back to high school – being sad the girl i liked didn't like me back. the nostalgia boosts this one up a lot for me. king for a day is such an anthem.
stumbled upon these guys thanks to the spotify algorithm. i think this is a very solid debut project. it also sounds a lot older than it is, but not in a bad way. some powerful lyrics here and there, sprinkled in with some melancholy guitar riffs made for a pleasant listening experience. I see that they are rolling out some new singles, and i think they will get a listen on their newest album from me in the future.
its alright, nice guitar riffs, nice vocals too, may revisit but wasnt anything terribly special
when i see that an album only has 10 songs, i immediately get excited. billie's vocals are the best they've ever been on this project. the short tracklist keeps your attention. the production is on point. very well could be her best work imo
like a lot of the reviews on here have already stated, this thing is catchy as hell. it's nothing revolutionary but i could listen through it again no problem. this passes my litmus test of "can i drink a beer in a lawn chair to this?"
