Pinned Review

Nectar is one of the most stimulating listens I've had this year. Every song manages to place you in its own little world, even if some are noticeably album tracks or filler. It's just an enthralling listen.

Even the lyrical content, which some have found too derivative, feels perfect for the album. It isn't meant to provoke your mind with wild Swans-esque lyrics, its a simple album about love and loss. If you enjoy it like that, how its supposed to be enjoyed, its hard not to fall a little ... read more

It doesn't feel like it has the raw emotion of Joy and Brutalism, nor the subtlety and originality, but nonetheless this record still feels like a great punk album. Ultra Mono has perhaps their most consistent track-list in tone, but unfortunately loses that unique charm that songs like June and Slow Savage had on previous records. The closest to capturing that subtlety has to be the barn-burner of a penultimate track, A Hymn, but other than this the record feels a little too familiar.

One of those albums that really feels like it justifies its enormous length. The long tracks, the slow builds, the abstract electronic soundscapes; it all feels like it comes together in an entertaining but coherent package. Sure, some tracks might not warrant the amount of indulgence and special treatment they receive, but this doesn't ever feel problematic. It's desolate, but absorbing.

I don't know if this is it. It just felt inconsistent, stale and slightly dull. The bubblegum bass sound that seems to be really popular atm is starting to feel a little bit overdone.

Best tracks: Oh Yeah, Beautiful Superstar, Lifeline
Worst track: Xxoplex

Took a while to really get to grips with this project, but as I anticipated on my slightly disappointed first listen, it is a grower. Some tracks stand out earlier on, whilst others take time to work their way into your brain. It's a really nice, relaxing listen, and although it isn't Helplessness Blues part 2, it's a great project in and of its own rights.

Best tracks: Sunblind, Maestranza, Shore, Featherweight, I'm Not My Season
Worst track: For A Week or Two

Feels like classic Flaming Lips in the best way imaginable. The whole tone and aura of the album is something only they could conjure, and the general flow track to track is pretty unbelievable. Not every track hits the mark for me but there's a lot to respect here.

Best tracks: Assassins of Youth, You N' Me Selling Weed, Will You Return / When You Come Down
Worst track: Dinosaurs on the Mountain
