Really love the oppressive vibe on here. I've only listened to By the Time I Get to Phoenix before this, but I really loved the heavy vibes presented there, and I'm really happy to see those same ideas translated here.
I really didn't start getting into the album until In My Town, but when I got there, I was in and was enthralled by what this album was doing.
I really don't care for the first three songs all that much, as the mellow vibe there didn't really connect ... read more
I absolutely overplayed the shit out of this in high school and thought I was so cool and edgy for being a metal fan. Turns out I was just awkward and autistic.
Still a great song though.
If you listen to Solway Firth close enough at around 4:00, you'll hear a Minecraft chicken sfx. I feel like it adds to the experience of the song.
Definitely bloated, but this is my favorite album by the band since Vol. 3. The performances are fiery and energetic, with Corey's voice especially sounding intense, angry and sad.
The instrumentation is also performed and mixed very well. Love how crunchy the guitars are and how prominent the bass and drums are on here. As much shit ... read more
Thanks to @HomeSession3 and @Lady6ov6Fire for the recommendation! Didn't know where to start with these guys.
It's some pretty solid thrash. I don't know what else to say. Riffs and solos are great, drums are nice and speedy, and the vocals stink. It checks all the boxes of a classic thrash record if you ask me.
I don't really get more out of it though. As solid as it is, you can tell this band has been influenced by a lot of the greats from the 80's, especially ... read more
I remember another time where I went to Starbucks and I once again forgot that a small is called a tall, so when I told the same barista that I wanted a small cup of coffee, she actually leaped over the counter and beat the shit out of me.
A really great sequel to Ziltoid, if t is a bit less consistent. I do find the highs on here to be higher than the first album, as the addition of a full band, choir and a female vocalist to be really charming and grand.
The humor also still hits pretty ... read more
I once went to a Starbucks and asked for a small coffee. The barista told me to kill myself.
One of my favorite Devin Townsend albums, and one of the most effective comedy albums I've heard. The story is wacky as hell, and there are a bunch of wonderful quotes in here I repeat daily.
Best of all, the music is well written and performed. There are a bunch of kickass riffs melodies in here that keep me coming back again and again. Also, Devin's voice is wonderful. I loved him in ... read more
I finally made it home about 7 hours ago. I immediately crashed in my bed and slept so fucking good.
Another whimsical one as a celebration. XTC is a band I found out from a good friend, and then got a few of their vinyl's from my uncle. Really wonderful group with a lot of bangers.
English Settlement is the one I've listened to the most. While it is fairly bloated, there is a lot of amazing stuff here.
It's catchy, groovy and whimsical. This album does a really wonderful job ... read more
I'm still trapped at work. Big update, I discovered that we have a shower in the building. Big morale booster right there.
Decided to pick an album to fit the new mood, and Random Access Memories seemed the best fit. Really love this album, and is probably my favorite by the duo, even if it is a bit bloated.
This album just scratches an itch in my brain that Discovery doesn't do. Yeah, it's an overall better listening experience with less bloat, but man, I love every song on ... read more
I'm still trapped in the office. I tried to go home today, but I couldn't even leave the parking lot without slipping and sliding. I'm really about to stay 48 hours in this god forsaken place.
Coming back to this album seemed like a good mood setter. I'm tweaking the fuck out, and this is the band at their peak tweak factor. It's groovy, proggy and kicks so much ass. It's also unhinged as hell, and really is the band at their most aggressive, for better and for ... read more
I've been spending the last few hours with this on repeat while I read Scott Pilgrim. All the while, I've been trapped inside my office workspace due to a snowstorm and I'm going to have to sleep here. Probably going to have to spend 36 hours here as I work tomorrow.
All of this to say a new core memory has been unlocked, and I'm feeling like that guy on the cover. Full of joy and whimsy.
Had to work during the snowstorm. I work night shifts too, so it's going to be a wacky night. Genuinely considering sleeping at the office tonight.
Anyways, heavy snow means more black metal. Really love the vibe on this one. The mixing scratches my brain just right, having the right amount of crunch without sounding like complete dogshit.
Performances are also really great. Riffs are wonderful, drumming is crazy and the vocals are pretty nice.
Don't really have much more to say. ... read more
Really strong first half, pretty good second half.
Post metal has always been a tough sell for me, mostly due to song lengths and a more distinct direction towards vibe and atmosphere over technical prowess and individual performances. I've warmed up to it a bit more, but I still don't love a lot of the fan favorites.
Panopticon is pretty great, and I think it stands out from the rest because it sounds much more ethereal and huge compared to its peers. So Did We is a wonderful ... read more
More of a Mutter guy, but I cannot deny how groovy this is.
This album is packed with chunky riffs, dark synths, some mean drum mixing and some wacky vocals, all stuff Rammstein does best. There are a lot of wonderful bangers on her, and they all get my head moving and neck hurting.
There are also a lot of neat slower, acoustic moments on here, though most of them didn't work for me. Los was definitely my favorite, and I found it to be a shame none of the other slower songs or moments ... read more
I mean, it's not much different than Prowler in the Yard, but I found this to be much more engaging listen.
The riffs are better, the screams are better and the album flows better. Terrifyer is just a better performed version of Prowler in the Yard.
Alongside that, you still get the vicious and unhinged vibe. This thing is NASTY and completely unhinged in the best way possible, something any good grindcore album should achieve.
I'm not sure I would go as far to say it's my ... read more
I find the lows on here to me much more boring and bland than All Hope Is Gone, but there is still plenty to enjoy here.
I really enjoy the hard and heavy moment as much as the softer, slower ones. AOV, Custer and The Negative One all bang and really get my head moving. On the flip side, Killpop, Nomatic and The Devil In I are really nice slower songs with some wonderful choruses. If the band has mastered one thing at this point, it's making a big and impactful chorus.
However, just like ... read more
Why is there a rock opera in the middle of my survival horror game.
There are some really fantastic highlights on here, but man the middle section really brings this down for me, even if they are decent songs.
I've always felt that this album gets a bit too much hate. This was where they were at their most mainstream, so it makes sense, but I feel often fans tend to forget that sometimes comes with some banger music.
Psychosocial is a metal classic at this point. The solo is crazy and the chorus BANGS. I don't adore Cory's vocals on here like I ... read more
There are two ways you can view this. Both are valid.
You can be pretentious and say it's unoriginal and overproduced, meshing together pretty generic deathcore and metalcore. On the other hand, you can view this from a less critical lens and praise this for its enjoyable brutal moments, neat melodic moments and overall good performances.
I'm in both camps, but I'm leaning towards enjoying this more than not.
I think it's pretty fun, and it does enough to separate itself ... read more
This album is really stupid (affectionate).
I've been wrestling with this one, as I'm really the biggest fan of note-salad tech death. However, I've come around to find this to be one of the better, if not the best of this type of death metal.
I think what keeps me coming back are the riffs and genre switch-ups. This album can be really groovy, nasty and pretty all in the span of 30 seconds. Because of how quick this album goes, the listener is thrown a bunch of awesome stuff, ... read more
