Korn - Korn

I mean with no exaggeration when I say this is one of the most important metal albums in the genre. So many artists have been inspired by this band, even outside of the nu metal scene. Not only did it push the boundaries of what a metal album can sound like, it pushed the listener into experiencing how dark and disturbing popular music can be.

This album is written and performed incredibly well. It's so groovy and nasty, a large part due to the production, which I find to be perfect.

Lamb of God - Into Oblivion

It's a Lamb of God album. It's going to at least kick a little bit of ass.

I miss the rugged and hard-hitting production of their earlier albums, as this one sounds a bit sterile. Still, the riffs on here are absolute gold, and that is the main appeal with this band.

Goodness these riffs continue to slap. They got me geeking in my bedroom doing backflips and shit. If you've heard an album by these fellas before, you know what I am talking about.

Yes, the band has essentially ... read more

Thanks to @Kacper for the recommendation!

I don't quite get a lot out of this compared to the albums they have released after this, but it is still a pretty entertaining, brutal metal album. It's very groovy, the vocals kick ass and the drumming is on point.

This was probably the point in their career where they started making great stuff, thus influencing them to create the bangers like Demigod and The Satanist. Still, there are some pretty rough edges here and I don't find it ... read more

Fires in the Distance - Air Not Meant for Us

Thanks to @Lady6ov6Fire for the recommendation! I have listened to this album before, but it was a good excuse to come back to it as I have not heard it since I listened to it in 2023.

Really great, moody album. The doomier approach makes it a very atmospheric album, and it greatly benefits from it as it makes the longs songs much more interesting to listen to.

Growls are great, solos are wonderfully tasteful and everything just comes together really well, especially the classical/piano ... read more

Harry Styles - As It Was

I don't think a song counts as a guilty pleasure if it's actually good.

Kreator - Pleasure to Kill

Thanks to @HomeSession3 for the recommendation!

Really intense and fun. You can tell this was another album pushing the intensity of the genre right before Death came in and established death metal as a genre. Some riffs on here are wicked fast, and it is really cool hearing pioneers of this sound.

I don't think it has aged the greatest, especially since metal has gotten so wild and insane over the years that I bet this doesn't hit the same as it did when it came out. Also, I think ... read more

Mid all the time. Bangers, occasionally.

The Scythe - Strictly 4 The Scythe

For a project with so many big names working on it, this ended up being pretty generic.

It can be pretty fun, especially when Denzel is spitting on the mic, but man this was a pretty big letdown.

Fallujah - The Flesh Prevails
75

Really damn fun. I found this one to be much more enjoyable as the riffs and drums have much more weight to them. Them chugs and bass lines hit HARD.

The first half of the album is especially great, as that's where the band's technical writing and precise playing feels the most locked in and interesting. Those moments where the noodling took a back seat and the grooves came out was where I found myself really digging this.

The album really drops off after Alone With You, and a lot ... read more

Fallujah - Xenotaph

Definitely a fun album with some bonkers performances, but man that production is cheeks. There is like no punch to this album at all, and the whole thing sounds super thin.

It can be ignored if that doesn't bother you to much, and there are definitely some songs where it really isn't that big of a deal. Maybe it's because I listened to this album in two sittings with two different headphones, so full potential it could be my fault.

Still, I bet this would be fun live.

Thanks to @Lady6ov6Fire for the recommendation! Been meaning to get into these guys more, and I found more enjoyment in this one than their debut.

The productions is better, the riffs, drums and vocals hit harder, and the lyricism is much more pointed. This alum is incredibly direct in describing how much the church sucks, and you know what, they do be spitting a bit on here.

I also appreciate the runtime. With how punky this album is, I find the length getting trimmed down ever more help ... read more

Deicide - Deicide

Album makes me want to square up with those bastard skeletons in the crypts.

Really enjoy the punkish vibe this one has. It makes the whole project have more of a punch to it. Alongside that, the production is surprisingly good, with some punchy guitars and drums.

Vocals are also incredibly unhinged, which I enjoyed quite a bit.

There are other death metal albums from this era I prefer more, but this is still a damn good album, especially for a debut.

Between the Buried and Me - The Blue Nowhere
70

It meanders a lot, but it's another good album by the wankers.

Lot of cool grooves in here. The hard-hitting metalcore stuff feels extra punchy this time around, and it really is a treat to hear. As much as I enjoy the weirdo stuff these guys do, when they do hard-and heavy riffage with the screams, what's where I am the most locked in.

Still, there were plenty of wacky stuff in here that was engaging to experience. I always find myself on the edge of my seat with where the music is ... read more

Between the Buried and Me - Colors II

I remember listening to this when it first came out knowing absolutely nothing about the band but still found a ton of enjoyment from it. Coming back to it now after not listening to it for nearly 5 years, it's still very good, but it is very bloated.

Let's get the things I don't like about it out of the way first. Even though I've always admired BTBAM's approach to throw everything at the wall and make it work style of writing, it goes get very overwhelming and not ... read more

Bruno Mars - The Romantic

Pretty let down that he hadn't made anything big in nearly 5 years, and then he comes in with an album that really doesn't leave that big of an impact. As someone who is a Bruno mars enjoyer, I wish it was much more bombastic and had that larger-than-life energy presented in some of his other work.

That said, if Bruno Mars knows how to do one thing, he knows how to make songs that are absolute earworms and are catchy as hell. That is still present here, even if some of the songs are ... read more

Gorillaz - The Mountain

My favorite album the band has made since Plastic Beach.

Really love this thing. Really does feel like the most ambitious and big thing the band has made in over a decade. I'm still wrapping my head around everything, as I've only got one listen down, but there is just so much depth and charm to this thing I've really been missing from these guys.

The features are all once again handled really well. From instrumentals to vocals, nearly every gust appearance was a joy to hear ... read more

"@andrewa1975 Idk. I know some people who have listened to a lot more music than me and still found a lot of enjoyment in this album. It really boils down to what you value the most in music. I'm real picky with pop and electronic albums, but some people may not be so picky and can see past the flaws this album may have. That's what I really like about media discussion, as it would be pretty boring if everyone loved the same thing, so hearing what others have to say and what they see in a work of art is what makes sites like these great."

On Goober1234's review of Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
"I think a lot more people rate songs lower due to hearing them a lot is more common that you think. Doechii's Anxiety and All I Want for Christmas Is You are two songs that get a lot of shit, and the main reason for that is because of how overplayed they are. However, I think pointing this out with big hit classics is also fair and really isn't talked about enough. Like I love Bohemian Rhapsody, but I'm sure if I surrounded myself with theater kids who played this non-stop I would hate it and myself as well."
