On 2013's 'Because the Internet', Childish Gambino flexes his lyrical prowess while maintaining his trademark humor and charm. Despite featuring some pretty bland and uninteresting lows, the album's storytelling and thematic depth captivate listeners. On 'Awaken, My Love!', Childish Gambino moves more towards his experimental side which was starting to form on 2014's "Kauai" by embracing funk and soul elements with remarkable success. While some experimental moments, like 'California' fall short, his emotionally matured storytelling on tracks like "Redbone" and "Me & Your Mama" seem to compensate.
