going through the rest of big thief's discography after loving dragon new warm mountain. and although this is very good, it doesn't really hold a candle to that album, which may be unfair to say since they are attempting very different things. I feel like big thief has such a high floor of quality, like I haven't heard a particularly bad song from them. it's just that very few of these stuck with me on first listen. but I will definitely listen again !
god this shit is exhilarating, so much fun. I don't even have much else to say, it's just a really great emo album and I look forward to going through the rest of title fight's stuff !
I really wish I enjoyed these deluxe songs more, but man these are just doing nothing for me. even the one with erykah badu, I feel like they didn't properly utilize her because it sounds like her vocals were recorded on someone's phone while it was in their pocket. which I'm sure was an intentional stylistic choice, but it just didn't work for me. the vocal samples in general just feel so much weaker on the deluxe songs than on the original album. yeah I didn't love ... read more
this was one of the craziest first listens to a new album I've ever had. I saw posts on twitter of people listening in their rooms with the lights off and getting scared, and I thought I'd do the same. I couldn't be happier with that decision because, in a way, it seems like the perfect time and place to listen to this album.
this review may come off as extra rambly because I don't even know where to start. I'm typing this out immediately after listening because I ... read more
okay I’m not just listening to this now for the first time. I’ve listened to it in full 5 or 6 times, I was just trying to decided exactly how much I love this album. and yeah I love it a lot, like wow this album is incredible. so many of my favorite songs of the year are on it, several of these drove me to tears. this is also one of the best produced pop albums I’ve ever heard in my life, like this is so clearly a labor of love and passion. honestly I’m still not FULLY ... read more
WOAH THIS IS MY 200TH REVIEW COOL !!!
okay I don't give a fuck if this is a basic take but this is an all time fav emo album for me. I unfortunately got put onto mobo just after they went on hiatus, but yeah this album will always be special to me. just so consistently fun and catchy and FUNNY. like going to bed now has some of the funniest lyrics I've ever heard that repeat in my head whenever I'm feeling petty and passive aggressive. this album has such a perfect balance of ... read more
took me a couple listens to realize that I actually love this album, and this is coming from a massive fan of 3d country. there was a bit of an adjustment period since this is a pretty large shift in sound from that album. I still think his vocals shine more when he's really letting loose and wailing, but even in this album which is comparably much more reserved, his voice is so unique that it still manages to shine. I also need to mention that $0 is one of the best songs of the year hands ... read more
I'M SORRY I JUST
fuck I really wanted to like this. and granted, this is only a first listen, but this did very little for me. I went into this with no real expectations of the sound, as this is the only dean blunt I've ever heard. but I found a lot of this to be really boring. there were some moments that had some pretty interesting ideas, and I admire the ambition of putting 13 minute and 9 minute songs right in the middle. I just don't think there was a single song that I ... read more
instrumental version would be like a 75. some of these beats are pretty great, but fuck i kinda hate how he sounds over most of them. like I found myself trying to tune him out and focus more on the beat, but you kinda can’t. idk the whole rapping ahead of the beat thing works for some people and sometimes it can be cool, but it doesn’t usually work for me. he's got a good ear for beats, but that’s about it. also the song tommy isn’t listed on here but it’s on ... read more
okay this is a long time coming
so I have a long history with porter robinson, ever since the spitfire ep, and this used to be my favorite album of all time when it came out. it kinda changed the way that I listen to music, for which I am forever grateful. I know pretty much this entire album by heart cause I listened to it so many times the year it dropped. but I hadn't gone back to it in full in a couple years, so I fixed that recently !
as I expected, a few of these songs have not ... read more
this doesn't hit as hard emotionally as the two middle songs on the first this thing of ours ep, but this is still quality shit. mavi's verse is fucking unreal, borderline historic. I definitely think the beats on the first one were stronger and more memorable, but there's still a bunch of strong verses on here, especially mavi's and mike's and vince's
okay maybe this shouldn't be my first full vylet pony album but fuck it, this is still great. I know this is a huge departure from what vylet pony has done in the past, which is just awesome. that first song is incredible and there's a lot of great songs to follow. I do wish I loved this as much as most other people seem to, and I'm not sure what exactly it is that's keeping me from getting there. admittedly I didn't pay attention to many of the lyrics or lyrical themes ... read more
as a massive jane remover stan, I have to admit that I haven’t gone back to teen week in a long time, probably about 2 years. I remember liking it but not living it last time I heard it, but wow I’m glad I went back cause this grew on me a lot
obviously it feels kinda like a stepping stone toward stuff she wanted to make more, but this is still one of the best projects from that 2019-2021 hyperpop scene. also the fact that frailty came out less than 9 full months after this is ... read more
today I was supposed to listen to a playlist my lovely friend made for me. I got two songs in before hearing that kendrick dropped a song. I listened to the minute long snippet like 5 times, and in that time span, he dropped a whole damn album
so I’ve listened to this 4 times now, and yeah obviously it’s great. it’s a total love letter to the west coast, and being from the west coast myself, I’m so here for it. but yeah so many west coast bangers, kendrick’s going ... read more
very very solid emo album right here ! definitely reminiscent of the hotelier and some other bands, but still some beautiful and emotionally powerful music. cried a couple times, and the reincorporation of the opening track on the closer made me really happy. not much to say tbh, just a great emo album. I do wish the strings were implemented more often cause I always loved when they popped up throughout the album
obviously I think wallsocket is the superior album, but that doesn't take away from just how good this album is. some of my favorite underscores songs ever are on here. dry land 2001 is one of her best songs and I will die on that hill, it saddens me that it's one of the lowest rated on here. I remember the first two or three times I heard this album I liked it, but not much more than that. I'm so glad I came back to it because it really grew on me. underscores is a generational ... read more
I'm a big brakence fan, but this was the first time I'd heard punk2 in full since it came out. and even though it's good, I just can't imagine coming back to it much when hypochondriac exists. there's still some classes on here (dropout, rosier, fuckboy), but a lot of these feel kinda empty compared to what he made after this. on here it still sounds like he's trying to figure out his sound. but listening to his two albums back to back really show how far he's ... read more
WHAT THE FUCK AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA WHY DIDNT ANYONE TELL ME HOW GOOD THIS WAS
okay I decided to listen to this because the band replied to me on twitter, and because I've been meaning to check them out. and WOW that was one of the most fun albums I've ever heard in my life. I was genuinely sad when it ended, but I can't wait to listen to it again. and I can't wait to listen to all of their other albums. but yeah origami angel has a new fan cause again, this was ... read more
I can’t believe it took me this long to listen to this in full because FUCK this was crazy
I don’t even know what to say about this, it was just so much fun. future sounds insane on this, the beats are basically all fire. also I just realized that the tracklist on here has 3 more songs that weren’t on spotify (the intro, abu’s boomin, fuck up some commas), so I’m rating the spotify version, and the spotify version was pretty much all heat
DAMN this is rad. I wonder if virtual riot is aware of just how influential his sound design has been for the underground electronic scene cause I hear him all over this. obviously it’s a lot more than that, but his influence is undeniable. also hearing some brakence, who I feel is also influenced by virtual riot. influences aside this is super unique and really cool shit. not many of these songs really stuck with me after first listen, but still super enjoyable ! will pay attention to ... read more
