I have hesitated for a long time reviewing this.... it's just rather unfocussed. Some real stand-outs -- Ancestress is a great experiment in strophic form that feels relentless in its grief. But in other instances (e.g. Freefall) I felt this minimal material was just being... dragged out? Hmmmmm
Lamar is consistently one of the best lyricists in ... the world? I try to avoid hyperbole but its just facts tbh. His sense of rhythm, often employing suspended hemiolas and polyrhythms, allows the lyrics space to breathe and fill out -- allows him to tell full stories on tracks that feel more like monologues ("Mother I Sober"). It doesn't seem to have the novelistic focus that Pang did, but it also doesn't seem fair to draw comparisons between the two albums. I like this one's big ideas, wacky production... I just like how different it is from most everything else happening in the field right now. Death to irony!
This is fantastic! Don't miss the wistful undertones in saccharine imagery, these are SERIOUS songs by a great writer. And of course Jolene and I Will Always Love You are certified CLASSICS......... her vocal sounds great consistently and the album doesn't overstay its welcome. What more can I say?
