This is one of the best records of all time. I am not even a tiny bit unsure of that. Every bit of this record was meticulously crafted and expertly delivered in such a messed up, perfect package. Experiencing Kid A at 2am staring at the ceiling is the closest thing to a spiritual journey I can think of. The lyricism is vague and multilayered, and the production as well as the vocal delivery is both haunting and eerily beautiful. The sheer amount of character that is stuffed into this record is ... read more
I really, really enjoy this record. I do think it has it's lows like I Refuse along with a myriad of other issues, but then there's tracks like Drive and Heartbeat City which really puncture your ears with warm and addictive synths leaving you jamming out in your car. I get this overwhelming feeling of warmth when I listen to this record, the kind of feeling you get when reminiscing about good times. Also, controversial opinion, this is the best Cars record. Heartbeat City just has an ... read more
So dreamy and spacey. This EP was a fantastic drop by Blood Orange. Actually, this EP was so great that I wish Blood Orange went more into depth with it’s sound and expanded upon it, because this was again, truly great. It may not be the most complex or intricate in any category, but the atmosphere this EP creates makes up for that. This was a great listen. I just wish there was more.
Best Track: Wish
Weakest Track: Something You Know
Wow, this record has not aged well. It's not because of anything controversial, it just aged poorly in the sense that you can really tell this came out in 2011. From the often cheesy delivery and lyricism, to the bland production, it is not difficult to tell. I will say though, there are a couple of good, standout tracks. I will defend Heartbeat to my last breath, even if it is bit cheesy. With that said, this record is mostly mediocre at best. If I were reviewing back then, I would not have ... read more
The debut from the currently elusive Frank Ocean is a spectacularly laid out journey of sound and emotion. Such a beautiful record that elicits so much emotion from one. This record fantastically keeps it's tone consistent while often changing it's sound. Yet, the changes in sound never seem jarring. Sometimes, this record is groovy and punchy, while others, it’s smooth and melancholy. It's range yet consistency in sound is mind blowing. Sure, it's not perfect, and maybe small tweaks in ... read more
Half 80s inspired bops, half forgettable mediocrity.
Best Tracks: Lifeline, Hold The Night
Weakest Track: It's Christmas
This is one of my favorite records of all time. It has such a strong emotional core about the crumbling environment of our world. This record makes you feel the entirety of the emotional spectrum. It can be groovy, melancholy, or both at the same time. Everything from the production, lyricism, and vocal performances are on point. Damon and crew outdid themselves tenfold. Empire Ants in particular might be one of the best songs of all time. It starts off with a soft guitar and 2D's (Damon's) ... read more
At many points, this EP is better than any of Orion's previously released records. I mean, it isn’t perfect, but it's pretty damn good. Orions voice is beautiful and captivating, and the wishful and more complex production here really serves this EP well. Also, Orion has seemingly got past most mixing issues that she had on her previous records, even if it still is occasionally spotty. I actually sort of wish this EP was realized as a full project because of how great it is. Though, I ... read more
In hindsight, this track should have been on Case Study 01 instead of Frontal Lobe Muzik.
This record has it's flaws, but it is over hated. This was probably Daniel Caesar at his most experimental and diverse. While this record goes for a similar sound to Freudian, the production and vocal performances were definitely more diverse here. Sometimes, they were even better here than on any other Daniel Caesar record. Though, the writing and the pacing was definitely a lot less consistent on this record. This record is pretty much split in two, the first half being much more ... read more
Freudian is a complete experience, even if it's not perfect. This record is amazing at keeping the same sound but using it indifferent ways so it doesn't become tiresome. I really love it when Daniel belts his heart out, his voice is just so silky and smooth. While across the record the sound and pacing is good, the pacing is not that great in a few tracks. I mean come on, we didn't need three minutes of silence on Freudian. The other track that I feel had off pacing is We Find Love, not much ... read more
This record has some of Post Malone's best work, and some of his worst. Unfortunately, this record suffers from similar issues as Stoney, such as being disjointed and disconnected. I feel like at some points this record tries to go for a sound, but then DaBaby comes on. I just don't get why most of Post Malone's records want to go in so many directions, and yet, they end up not reaching any destination. Some of these tracks like Take What You Want are so fun and unique, and then you have tracks ... read more
Innovative, creative, and incredible. All words that describe this record. The story about the occasional hell that our planet is with the glimpse of optimism at the end is incredibly captivating and gripping. The mixing of different genres was perfected down to a T here. Everything just works. From the groovy Feel Good Inc., to the uplifting Demon Days, this record offers so much while staying so consistent. This is where Gorillaz proved that they weren't just a novelty, but a voice to be ... read more
In Rainbows blows me away every time I hear it. This record is as beautiful as it is innovative. The band once again showed why they are among some of the best. Every track is absolutely stunning. Whether it be from the grand outro of All I Need, to the solemn Videotape, it's just pure magic. I highly, highly recommend you listen to this record for yourself if you haven't.
Best Tracks: Nude, Weird Fishes/ Arpeggi, All I Need
Weakest Track: N/A
While it may not be nearly as experimental or as innovative as their following records, The Bends is a fantastic body of work, flaws and all. Thom's soft, yet piercing voice floats near perfectly over the acoustic and electric production. The Bends all throughout just feels like this chaotic, confusing, and bittersweet goodbye to someone you love, and I think that’s the best way to put it. Do I think every track on here is perfect? No. I do think this record can get a bit one note at ... read more
This feels odd to say, but Pharrell's production was kind of lackluster and was easily outshined so much by Tyler and 21. I think that if this track had different features, it would not be nearly as memorable.
While the lyricism is eh, Travis' delivery and Pharrell's production is just so catchy.
My feelings on HEROES & VILLAINS have changed quite a bit over time. At first, I kind of wrote it off, but over time, I've just kept coming back to it. Yes, I do still harbor disdain for Chris Brown's verse On Superhero, and Lock On Me as well as All The Money are, in my opinion, still stinkers, but there's a lot of really great parts to this album. It's got a tight sound and theme, the production is nothing short of fantastic, and most of the features go off. So, yeah, ... read more
While I do think that heavenly ending didn't really have much building up to, the production and chill flow go insanely hard.
