To many, Jane Doe is seen as the pinnacle of metalcore, and with as raw and brutal of an album this is, it's easy to see why. While Jane Doe is not my favorite metalcore record ever released, it's certainly up there among the greats. You would be hard pressed to find an album as crazy as this one. Every single second of this 45 minute album is jam packed with shrill screams, insane mathy rhythms, and some of the rawest sounding production ever done. Despite being one of the most ... read more
Everyone who worked on this went on to do much better things in the future. This was a decent start, but nowhere near the titan Norma Jean would become.
Reviewing this one volume at a time bc it's way too long to do in one sitting lol.
Volume 1: god DAMN that saxophone is nice af. Some of the best jazz I've heard instrumentally. That being said, while the progression is fantadtic most of the time, some of the songs drag on a bit more than they need to. Gonna give volume 1 a 90.
Listened to volume 2 yesterday. That was a masterpiece. Some of the best jazz I've maybe ever heard. Gets a 98 from me.
Pretty cool mathcore album. It did go on a little longer than it needed to though and could have cut out some of the sludgy parts.
Highlights: The Truth Weighs Nothing, Mostly Hair and Bones Now
Low Points: The Vipers, Routine and Then Death
Like this review if you think Knocked Loose should cover Apple Bottom Jeans
Try not to give The Chariot ridiculously high scores challenge: IMPOSSIBLE
This album has some of the rawest shit I've ever heard on it. The Chariot are the best band to come out of mathcore and absolutely no one can change my mind on that.
Highlights: The Deaf Policemen, Then Came to Kill, Forgive Me Nashville
Low Points: Then Drew Their Swords
It has some super sick and raw moments but then every song has to have a clean chorus that kinda takes away from the energy imo. Cleans aren't a bad thing but in this album there needed to be fewer in my opinion. If there were fewer I think that the contrast could have worked great though. Despite my critiques, I still enjoyed this album quite a bit.
One of the best releases I've heard from Dillinger. Some of their most chaotic songwriting while incorporating the funkiness they would become known for.
Weird ass single choice but ok. It's cool but far too short to have real substance to it.
Nowhere near their most recent album but still decent. It just sounds like a b-side of And Everything In Between.
Super underrated album. It's like a cross between Thrill Seeker by August Burns Red and early Norma Jean. Paria deserves a lot more recognition for being a pretty early metalcore band and having super technical, experimental, and heavy music. Only one other person on this site besides me has reviewed any of their music so to whoever reads this I heavily reccommend this album.
Highlights: The Absurdity of Solace, A Torn Instance
Low Points: Too Many Puppies
This looks like it will be a pretty solid album but I really wish they hadn't sat on it and waited for Better Lovers to drop an announcement. It seems like really dumb drama and I wish that they could just move on with their new bands if ETID isn't ever gonna get back together. Either way I am definitely happy to be getting new music from everyone even if this release feels kinda petty to me.
Good but probably the weakest of what I've heard of Dillinger's discography. A couple songs can contend with some of the best TDEP songs still though.
Edit: I was wrong this album slaps and is a perfect last album for this band.
Highlights: Honeysuckle, Limerant Death
Low Points: Fugue, Dissociation
Super cool album that I think will grow on me upon relistens. Reminded me a lot of some of the greats of mathcore such as Converge, The Chariot, and most of all The Dillinger Escape Plan. It's definitely not too derivative of those influences though as it has it's nu-metal vibes as well. I want to relisten before I give the highlights of the album though as I listened to this in my morning workout and didn't catch all of the titles of my favs.
Metalcore songs like this do have their place but I'm likely not gonna return to this. It's ok but it doesn't do it for me like my favs of the genre do.
Really good but so farthe weakest of what this band has made. Still pretty hyped for the album though
