I genuinely don't know quite how to describe the production on this thing, it's varied and unique and never stays in one place for too long. The best way I can describe it is like, it feels like what I imagine the inside of a robot's mind to sound like? This really sleek, shiny and not fully human kind of sci-fi vibe. It's just bizzare and amazing.
There are some moments lyrically that are weird but for the most part they feel like they fall into the background. Maybe I'll grasp more in the ... read more
How do I begin to grapple with this record? It's a classical and drone metal collaborative project between a Native American Cherokee musician and a Maลri musician both based in Naarm (Melbourne) Australia. You've even got a track of spoken word poetry over dronibg guitars at one point. The only issue is that each component is extremely disconnected, you never get a song which trasitions smoothly between classical and drone metal and that really holds this project back. I also worry that the ... read more
This entire listen was fucking painful why does the RATM interpolation go hard though? NO LIKE WHY IS THE BEST SONG ON HERE A RATM INTERPOLATION WHY IS BLACK ROSE THE BEST SONG HERE?????
For real tho the sampling is such a miss because like, what do the samples bring to it? Remind me of better songs? The songs aren't really sexy either they're trying really hard to and just fall flat. It's really just painful and unflattering.
There's a half decent 4 track EP right at the end though. It kind ... read more
So this is my first Swans record and while I feel like I get the hype, I'm either not familiar enough with the band or just not engaging properly. I'm no stranger to long albums but this feels like a whole different beast to engage with. Trying toengage in the same way I would with drone metal didn't feel like it worked so maybe I'll try and get more into Swan's particular style before coming back to this.
Holy 2 hours Batman.
I feel like this album's biggest problem on first listen is its pacing. With an album that's going through processing thought of depression and suicidal ideation, while also trying to work through the suicide of a close friend, I feel like the emotional gut punch of the record and pseudo-title track Sean where they really bare all being smack dab in the middle with half of the record to go creates this strange void where you don't know where the record is going to go. This isn't to say the rest ... read more
Lastlings is one of those bands where they fly so comfortably in their lane that they won't be turning heads, but what they do they do bloody well. The Australian sibling duo on their new album just nail a series of sad bangers about love, heartbreak and yearning which all have just the right amount of colour to feel like each track is unique. While it isn't boundary pushing or anything like that, it's a solid batch of songs that just breezes by with very soothing soundscapes and very little to ... read more
It's fiiiiiiiine, it's decent smooth, non-descript jazz rock that you hear at a shopping centre and it didn't really stick with me or anything. I can't really knock it for anything but I feel like nothing really stands out about it either.
Happy Wrath month!
Pride month? No no no, this album has officially kicked off Queer Wrath month.
Spite Will Save Me takes the synthy pop of the theatrical Aussie duo's debut and goes fully into an embrace of the sheer theatrics of pop punk, with performances from frontperson Heather that would make early Panic! at the Disco blush. This album doesn't hold back on an overarching theme of queer rage, lead single People Like Me and singles like Cry About It were bangers about lashing back at ... read more
Imma be totally honest here, this album feels like a perfrct little encapsulation of a specific vibe that I'm way too nostalgic for, and while I don't know if I'm being soft on the album as a result or not, god damn does it just soar. There's something beautifully homely while also equally rocky, still feeling deeply personal while simultaneously feeling like it actually feels like it's thought out and well produced.
I'm a sucker for off kilter vocal performances like Alanis Morissette's, and ... read more
Jack River's new record feels like something where all the pieces are there but they just aren't fitting right. It feels like it should be shimmery pop goodness but it just feels like it's not fitting, be it slightly overproduced vocals on tracks like Real Life and Endless Summer, or the instrumentals on tracks like Lie To You just not clicking in place.
I feel like the last four tracks are where this project really shines. Nothing Has Changed was my favourite single off this project and the ... read more
King Gizz are done trying to overthrow Australian mining and oil magnates with the power of jazz on Omnium Gatherum and have swapped to the power of incredible violence (flamethrowers).
Some ripping thrash metal with some amazing progressions and enough variety to never feel stale. The vocals can be mixed a bit low sometimes and I think the lead single Gila Monster is a little weaker than the rest but this shit rips
Men will pine for their high school sweetheart from 10 years ago so much they try to win them back and watch her dump him again because he hasn't changed as a person since high school and still learn nothing from the experience instead of going to therapy. They really don't have a lot of variation across the record and there are times where it sounds like they just learnt what a leitmotif is.
Jellyfish still slaps though. They're right, jellyfish are fucking crazy.
Bro this is dogshit, Dave and Central Cee sound asleep, the beats are boring as shit, the only substance is insulting the girls they've fucked and some absolute clunker bars.
Some of the lowlight bars include
"I got body dysmorphia, a figure addiction"
"She a feminist she call me sexist"
"She want me in her uterus"
"She a 6 her friend is a 4, a three way make that a 10"
"Why you care bout your asian side"
"I stand up like Dave ... read more
"HUMANS ARE THE REAL VIRUS, HUMANS ARE THE REAL VIRUS" I scream as I slowly shrink into a corn cob.
Is it safe to say that it sounds like no one is actually enjoying themselves while recording this album? Like, I know I'm not the buggest death metal fan out here but fuck this feels passionless. Add onto that some commentary on the state of the world that amounts to "it would be better off if we all died" and refusing to actually engage with anything and I just hate this.
Def super enjoyable but I feel like I'll have to give it another listen because of how scattershot the progression and intensity feels at times
Initial thoughts. 06/12/2023
I feel like this album doesn't really start until the track titled Track 10 despite not being the tenth track. It feels like from that point after the album. While the first disc easily clears his previous record, but geez the rest of the album is an experience that I feel like I need a few more listens to really chew through. While it definitely feels like it deserves its one and a half hour runtime, it's definitely a commitment to listen to.
So, there's good stuff on here from a seemingly wide range of influences, feeling like a super wonky soundtrack from a poorly kept SNES game at its best. Also some of the samples are wild and the guitarwork, specifically the tuning and articulation, remind me of some of the best work from Polyphia.
Unfortunately there are some ideas that kind of show up a little too frequently and get a little tiring. Not too much of an issue given how short most of the songs are, but still it definitely means ... read more
Feeling like it's pulling from Porter Robinson, Lady Gaga and emo trap, I definitely feel like just labelling Frost Children as 101 Gecmations is a bit of a disservice as they craft a very different style of hyperpop for themselves, trading the ska-punk, metal and pop punk for early 2010s glam pop and EDM sounds. Not to say there aren't metal or Geccy tracks, Obsessed is a huge, cunchy track that feels right out of the Gecs playbook, but still feels their own.
I feel like the biggest issue ... read more
So, I originally had this as an 80 because most of this album is a fucking vibe when I'm not really listening as closely, but I feel like it does fall apart a little under a microscope. The middle leg is really weak especially, the first leg I still think is some of the best "weeb rap" out there but yeah it's definitely got nothing on the last leg. God damn when this album gets emotional in the last leg it just fucking goes.
It also has some of the most tasteful incorporations of ... read more
It's aight. It's some fun, queer indie pop, nothing too spectacular but nothing bad. Unfortunately I'm just not feeling this is as memorable as I was hoping it to be.
