I really wanted to like this, the start of the record made me feel like people were overhating this album but why is the mixing in the second half absolute dogshit?
Let's get the forgettable stuff out of the way, Karol G's track WATITI is some okay reggaeton, HAIM's track is forgettable and mixed horrible but not downright awful or anything.I do not remember Khalid's track at all and Ava Max's track is fun but forgettable dance pop. Fifty Fifty's track kinda exists too.
Onto the good. Lizzo's ... read more
I think my issue usually getting into K-Pop is it can often sound like its boiled down into this distilled, fine gloss that makes listening to the music itself feel kind of sterile. I don't get into all the fandom surrounding k-pop bands, so I don't really get into the standom that arises from individual members doing x or y, or the choreography of the music videos.
Odd Eye Circle managed to buck that for me though with production that feels the very opposite of sterile. It feels way more ... read more
I was kinda hoping I'd enjoy this a bit more than I did unfortunately. The big single CRÈME BRÛLÉE! was an absolutely fun jam that really got me excited for the rest of spill tab's output. Kinda that off-kilter instrumental that Ice Spice does but actually done well instead of sounding like a Spongebob sound. I don't think anything on this EP quite hits that same kind of creativity, especially Window and Splinter which feel a bit lackluster in comparison.

Death Grips but instead of drums it's made from the Mario 64 soundfont (positive)
Shy boy by Carly Rae Jepsen came on immediately after this uninspired piece of trash and I had 20 times more fun listening to that song that the entirety of this record combined. Just rehashing every pastiche of lazy, radio friendly pop that even Ed Sheeran is trying to branch away from this album has no soul and no reason to listen to unless you wanna hear the worst cover that Rita Ora has done since ruining Running Up That Hill.
Similar to the EP from FLO last week, this is an absolutely amazing little 3 track EP which is overshadowed by the most insanely stellar first track that make the following two tracks feel quaint in comparison. SHI=DEATH is an absolutely bonkers mix of nu-metal with some breakcore elements thrown in, similar to what I got from the fromjoy record earlier in the year. BALCK_WAVE is probably the weakest track here (still good), being a mostly clean cut nu-metal track without a lot of the bells and ... read more
So, I'd never actually gone back and listened to Charli until recently, despite How I'm Feeling Now being one of my favourite albums of 2020. For some reason, I got it in my head it was similarly abrasive hyperpop to the tracks like claws and enemy off that record but this is just sheer pop goodness. Tracks like Gone, Cross You Out and 1999 are major pop anthems, and I don't think this album really lets up at all outside of the kinda drawn out vibes that come out of the posse cut Shake ... read more
Just some tight ass metal that doesn't overstay it's welcome, hits you and runs. Could maybe be a bit more memorable but it's so short I can easily see myself coming back to it.
This is about as inconsistent as the Uzi record, where some tracks even if they could have shitty verse syndrome or the opener which sounded strangely like a weird JID impression, were absolute fucking jams, and then some were fucking terrible. Man clearly has talent IDK what's holding him back.
See like, I don't know if any of this except the title track is really gonna stick with me but it goes hard as fuck and it's exactly what I needed after spinning bloods all morning.
Absolutely one of my favourite Pop Punk records of all time. There are some times where it definitely falters, the closing track especially has some questionable mixing decisioms but that's more than made up for by the highlights. Genuinely one of the best opening runs of tracks ever from title track Morbid Stuff too Scorpion Hill.
These feel somehow even more like the two of them shooting the shit together than the original album. Definitely not as curated as the album but a fun little set of extras with surprisingly a lot more Danny than Peggy compared to the album.
So I think I'm also in the boat where rating this feels insensitive. While by normal standards it's nothing amazing, there's a rawness in the vocals and lyrics that still make the song just hit so different. Like, there's something about the way they sing and the chorus is just heartwrenching. RIP to their dad...
I wanted to wait till I finished writing up my retrospective before I wrote up or gave ratings to any of Ball Park Music's albums but I can confidently say this is their worst album. I might go into greater depth about this album at a later time but in every respect most of these songs sound very shallow either in sound or lyrics in a way that I haven't heard in the rest of BPM's back catalogue. Overall, I think this album is trying to give off this whole "good vibes only no negative ... read more
Tkay pulling from some classic M.I.A. kind of vibes on this while going so hard lyrically. Never feels like it sits in any place for too long and feels absolutely chaotic. Flume's production feels like it took the best parts of Syrup and made it even more crushing and thick. Honestly, not a teamup I ever expected and DEFINITELY not something I expected to sound like this.
This EP starts REALLY promising but unfortunately fails to carry through. It feels like it's throwing a lot at the wall and seeing what sticks and unfortunately some of it just doesn't.
PSYCHO was a single that was released long before we even knew about this EP's existence, produced by HibikiTakahashi and Tom H@ck, it's essentially out Ado'ing Ado with the sheer rawness in Bae's voice. Not really gonna go into the lyrics cause I don't speak Japanese but yeah this song is a strong start and ... read more
The production on this album feels like it really sets it apart from a lot of Reggaeton I've heard. I have definitely seen people talk about the genre getting really stale as a bunch of artists jump on the simplest Reggaeton beat and play the tropes straight, but this really feels like it's trying to do its own thing. The hints of lo-fi and electronica on this album coalesce into a really lovely interesting blend of sounds. The biggest issue is that without the ability to understand Spanish, I ... read more
This is fucking insane, the production is amazing and I listened to it immediately after Voidhood's new project had already made me ascend and I swear I saw god after this. The thing that pushes this over the Ryan Ferris and Voidhood album though personally is that there aren't any weird lyrics to get in the way. Like holy this feels like it wasn't made by people? It's so good holy fuck!
This is a weird one for me. I hate the idea of turning your brain off while listening to an album, but this isn't so much turning your brain off but more like just leaning into the vibes going on here. There's an interpolation of Blue on here that I don't hate, the cover of Chop Suey is dogshit but then the nu metal track with BMTH right after slaps. Suicide Doors goes hard. Lowkey I think Nakamura is a bit overrated I feel like there is waaaaay more room for that to have gone way harder on ... read more
