Fires in the Distance - Air Not Meant for Us
72

(Originally this was a comment in the replies of aotyscure’s review but i think this deserves to be fleshed out into its own thing.)
There are a number of things I really like about this album. They did a good job of evenly balancing the melodeath/doom genre combination, incorporating the piano, and especially creating an atmosphere. However, I have 2 major problems here that hold me back from enjoying it as much as a lot of other people here.
Firstly, I think the vocals are easily the ... read more

Iron Firmament - Iron Firmament

Finding this made all the mid black metal that I listened to this month worthwhile. It has great atmosphere (as a bonus I got to listen to it with actual snow outside! Not too common where I live). Since I found this, it's been the album I've listened to the most, so I can confirm it has great replay value. It has memorable songs and variation. My only real complaint is the mixing of the drums being too quiet at times, I could easily see myself giving this a rating in the 90s if that was ... read more

AK//47 - Menari Dalam Abu Algoritma
74

This may be the most an album has exceeded my expectations in recent memory. Best way I can describe this is grindcore that has well-incorporated punk elements and feels very "groovy" in the best way possible. Also at times there's something in the mix that sounds almost like a large dump truck idling, which sounds like it should be a negative but it just somehow worked for me? idk, the album is good, check it out

Hauntologist - Hollow
55

AOTY don't overrate postmetal challenge (impossible)

Project 86 - OMNI, Pt. 2
56

I can honestly see myself warming up to this a lot more in the future, but on my first listen it just sounded like bargain bin KMFDM a lot of the time (which may really be saying something given KMFDM's recent output)

Rings of Saturn - Rings of Saturn
25

It is fairly well known that after people die, they may shit themselves due to relaxation of the muscles that would normally hold said shit within the body. This is evidence that bands may do the same thing. Rings of Saturn died, and here’s the shit.

Trist - hin-fort

I get why some people would really like this, but imo this is without a doubt the single most bloated album I’ve ever listened to. The first 13 minutes and last 6 minutes of Hin and the ENTIRETY of Fort are just NOTHING. Absolutely nothing. Fort also includes a bunch of random ass samples throughout a full hour of ambient boredom tacked onto the end of the album. Those middle 40 minutes or so of Hin (the only part of this even remotely worth listening to) are decent albeit repetitive ... read more

Profane Order - One Nightmare Unto Another
85

Not Earth-shatteringly unique or varied or anything, but I’m giving it a very high rating for the sheer replay value. As many incredible albums as I found this year that DID accomplish that, when I open spotify I find myself going “hmm I should listen to One Nightmare Unto Another” and standing out that much to me has gotta count for something in my book.

74

It was hard to give this a rating unbiased by my disappointment that this wasn't as good as Primal Incinerators, because this IS good, just not THAT good.

Body Void - Atrocity Machine
69

This is stupid, but for me this score can range up or down by 5-10 depending ENTIRELY on how late it is at night when I listened. I listened once at like 4:30 or 5 AM and wanted to give it a score in the high 70s or an 80, and when I listened again in the afternoon I wanted to give it a low 60. Meeting somewhere in the middle after listening a third time at 11PM lol.

Decipher - Arcane Paths to Ressurection
54

While this entire album was bland, repetitive, and forgettable imo, the song "Enslaved to Be" somehow managed to make everything come together in a way that really worked for me. Outside of that nothing of much interest really happened here for me

Aftermath - There Is Something Wrong

I mean at least the title is correct lmfao. This seriously might be the worst metal album I've ever heard in my entire life, and I don't think words alone can do it justice but I'll try my best. Imagine your drunk uncle ranting about how the government is run by lizard people at Thanksgiving dinner, then put it over some of the worst thrash you've ever heard, and then add random additional shit that doesn't make any sense?? Idk how to describe it other than it being so incompetent and ... read more

Iced Earth - A Narrative Soundscape

I'm only giving this a 1 instead of a 0 because it may be quality YTP source material

Every Time I Die - Low Teens
90

This is a rare case of a good album where one of the bonus tracks from the deluxe version is one of my favorites. Idk why they didn’t include “Nothing Visible; Ocean Empty” on the main album but it’s SO good, probably my second favorite track here after Map Change. This may be a hot take but I think it would be a better closer than Map Change if it came directly afterward. Definitely check it out!

WARGASM - Venom
67

This sounds like if early 2000’s KMFDM (especially the style from MDFMK and Attak) decided to make Nu Metal, and it’s executed a lot better than that sounds on paper.

Efraah Enhsikaah - One Thousand Vultures Waiting To Be Fed
60

I find your lack of blast beats disturbing…
Srsly though, I feel like they’d go a long way to make this feel less bland. Third track is probably the best bc it’s the one song where they actually DO have good drums

Green Carnation - Light of Day, Day of Darkness
94

This was on track to be even higher but at the 33 minute mark or so it sounded like Yoko Ono showed up and ruined about 5 minutes of the song. I know it's not actually her, but it may as well be, like wtf were they thinking? Feels even worse because the rest of this album/song is SO good. There are a few other parts where it gets a bit too Dream Theater-y for my liking, but with much better lyrics (which is my biggest problem with a lot of Dream Theater), as well as a few other parts with ... read more

Catacomb Abscess - Primeval Mutilation
61

Pretty forgettable for the most part, but if you listen to it def stick around to the end because imo the second half of the album is much stronger than the first half. Cavernous Violence particularly stands out for me, I think I like how it transitions or something.

Boréalys - L'héritage
60

The beginning is very good but it declines a bit as the album continues. Also the beginning has these weird samples or something in it that make it harder for me to get into it. This issue is especially bad in this circumstance imo because I really like atmo-black to feel immersive and the samples ruin that by reminding me "they deliberately put this weird sound effect here" if that makes sense.

Stortregn - Finitude
91

How on Earth is this not getting more attention? It combines the best elements of a multitude of genres including melodeath, actual death metal (specifically tech-death), and black metal, and it's executed extremely well. Definitely check this out if you get a chance!

"@deathcorelover yeah I know a lot of people on this site think that, and to me Assemble the Chariots did a better job accomplishing what it seemed like Lorna Shore were trying to on Pain Remains. I’m prob the wrong person to be judging deathcore (and I’ve tended to focus more on other metal genres since making this review) but to my relatively untrained ear it sounded like something Lorna Shore fans may love"

On Trisumun's review of Bolt Thrower - Those Once Loyal
"Interesting perspective, I actually like the back half of the album a lot more. Still incredible all around. Also idk if you’ve listened to other Bolt Thrower albums but that intro to Killchain is a recurring motif throughout some of their other songs (there may be more but ik it’s in Embers and Cenotaph off the top of my head). Kind of makes the song even cooler to me in a way bc it’s almost like they called their shot, it’s like a musical way of saying ahead of time “yeah this one’s enough of a banger we’re including it into this lineage” and then absolutely delivering"

On redsus's review of Trivium - Ascendancy

On CaptainSquirrel's review of Chat Pile - Cool World
"“The Healer” by Sumac is another sludge metal album from 2024 with a completely different approach (that I honestly liked way more tbh). It’s admittedly not the most approachable album at 76 mins for 4 songs, but it absolutely justifies it imo. If that’s too slow for you I also really enjoyed “Murder Phobia” by Insect Corpse, which is one of the rawest albums I’ve ever heard."
On Doxophobia - Basic Intellect May Burn Out
"@DeathOfHumanMus also when it goes hard, it goes HARDDD. The other guy who reviewed this so far (sickriffsman) is the guy behind Defaced, who made Opium Angel, one of the heaviest albums I heard all year. For you to make something that he of all people considers "mind-blowingly intense" while being so multifaceted that it doesn't even feel like being as brutal as possible was a major focus is damn impressive to me at least."
On Doxophobia - Basic Intellect May Burn Out
"@DeathOfHumanMus it's an amazing album!! Sorry I meant to make an actual review for this at some point but haven't gotten around to it yet. I will say I'm pretty sure Magnets and Astronomy is somewhere in my top 3 songs of 2024, and I've listened to a TON of stuff this year. I LOVE how at times it sounds proggy but like almost 70's prog rock style proggy while still being metal, not regular "prog metal" prog if that makes any sense lol. What I liked most is just that the album is so versatile but everything fits together and still feels really cohesive."
