This is simply a really fun album with lots of great moments. Everything feels united under one album, but each track has its own ability to shine. There are faster-paced, more fun tracks, along with slower, more relaxing tracks, with a wide range in between. It's just an album that's easy to listen to front to back, with lots of unique moments that make it stand out. This is definitely one that I'll be coming back to in the future. It's just a good time with some diverse ... read more
This is one of those albums that just fails at everything it tries to do. I'm only even listening to this because I told myself I'd try to listen to most big 2025 releases, and morbid curiosity sure got to me. This album is just absolute ass. His voice is the exact same autotune-fucked rap tone with the same flow the entire time, and it gets old after the first three songs. The writing is a complete fail at comedy. It tries to have this sort of shock value with its lyrics with ... read more
LETHAL is an album that has a really fun concept on paper, but comes off as kinda half-assed in execution. I enjoy the wide range of styles on this album, and the trap beats mixed with the electric guitar leads to some energizing performances. However, when it comes down to it, 15 songs and 33 minutes means that songs start and end right on top of one another, and you don't really have any time to process half of these tracks. She has a nice voice that isn't the best thing ever, but ... read more
This was alright, but also this kind of folk music doesn't really do much for me. I could really appreciate some moments, such as the long intro of The Question, but other tracks tended to feel a bit overdone, like the lyrics in Bullies. It's not a bad time, and those who really enjoy singer-songwriter type music (is that a genre or just a descriptor?) will probably love this, but it was just alright for me. Decent vocals, nice ambient worldbuilding, but it fails to fill in the gaps ... read more
This is a really solid album! I've realized I tend to heavily prefer music like this when there's a female singer, and Lucy Dacus upholds that idea. This is just a nice time, with songs that are easy to listen to, but with enough substance so that they don't become dull. The record does lose some steam near the end, but that first half is really nice. Lucy Dacus has a nice voice, and pretty solid writing skills that work for the music she's trying to do.
I can't lie, I really did not like this one. 2hollis could work, but all the invidivual components do not work well together whatsoever. The electronic production is kind of fun, but the lyrics feel too basic, like a TikTok indie song (ironic, considering there's a slip of an acoustic track near the end). I also don't really like his spoken-word/fuckboy accent type of interludes and singing, it doesn't do much for me at all. It's a whole bundle of components that are ... read more
Forgot to log this when I listened a couple nights ago. Amy Winehouse really was something else, though. This album may be a bit more rough around the edges, with a less refined voice, but there's some nice songwriting here, and the tracks really lay down the groundwork for a solid chunk of modern-day soul music. It's just a great time from front to back, and while I may not have much to say about it, it's a great record where the deep cuts are just as good as, if not better, ... read more
Yeah, this is absolutely phenomenal. I got into Kali Uchis's music around this time last year, because I was absolutely drawn in by Isolation. Now, I'm happy to say this is the first project that really lives up to its greatness. This feels like an incredibly personal album from front to back. It's deeply intimate, to the point where it almost feels like an invasion of privacy to listen. The worldbuilding throughout the record's composition is truly amazing. From second one ... read more
I debated whether I prefer this or Drunk more for a while, and while I was leaning towards Drunk, I think that in the end, I do like It Is What It Is just a little more. While Drunk is a bit more consistent in vibe, It Is What It Is just has such a fun and energetic vibe the whole time. It's hilarious, with moments like the interlude in Overseas, standout lines in tracks like Miguel's Happy Dance, and the entirety of Dragonball Durag. The bass work is amazing on every track, and it ... read more
This is a solid little project Thundercat did between Apocalypse and Drunk which really feels like a transitional between his dark RnB sound on the former and his funkier sound he adopts after this. There are bits here that really feel like they could be on either, especially Lone Wolf and Cub. The vocals feel Drunk-esque, but the long instrumental bass solo feels right at home on Apocalypse. Even ignoring the standout track "Them Changes", this is just a good time I really enjoyed.
With Drunk, you either get it, or you don't. I absolutely adore Thundercat's music, but I can admit this is definitely something that doesn't appeal to everyone. The sporadic track times, psychedelic production, and weird songwriting can be a bit off-putting to some. However, I don't really care! I absolutely adore this album. It just feels so authentic and full of life, from front to back. It's funny as hell, with memorable lyrics that catch you off guard ("Goku ... read more
This is a criminally underrated album. I see a lot of hate on this record all over, from poor reviews to people criticizing the mixing. To me, though, this is a great time. Apocalypse takes the foundations that its predecessor laid down, and improves on almost every manner. There are more vocals, but the album never strays away from instrumental portions of songs, which really lets songs shine. I think of the opening for Tenfold, the drum solo in Lotus and the Jondy, and the last portion of ... read more
This is a very respectable beginning for Thundercat! I did a deep dive of his discography a few weeks back, but I'm only now getting to review it all. Golden Age of Apocalypse is mostly a vibes album, with very little singing, and heavy focus on the instrumentals. There's some parts where it drags, or could be a bit shorter or longer, but it's never bad. I personally really enjoy this, it's a vibe.
This album is so good but it's also fucking disgusting, in a really weird way. I don't have much context with his music before this, since I haven't heard any of black midi's music, but Geordie Greep on his own has the most batshit insane worldbuilding. He makes brutally realistic depictions of shitty people and gross things throughout this album. The singing is kind of harsh at first, but really works for the kind of poetic vibe he's going on in songs like Blues. The ... read more
Woah this was a wild time. I've had mild experience with psychedelic rock before, but I feel like I'm getting a contact high just listening to this. This is trippy, and it kind of makes me dissociate in a weirdly good way. The instrumentation and production overall leaves you feeling like you're ascending, and it's really like nothing I've heard before. It feels like getting high on the first track, riding the high in the middle, and then coming back down on the closer. ... read more
A really energetic and powerful release by this group! I love the amount of energy that the tracks have, and the emotion in the voice adds to the strong sound. Not every song is amazing, and the middle does drag a tiny bit, but it's still a really nice time, and delusionalism is truly transcendent.
Pretty cool EP. I know the streaming version is a reissue, but it's some pretty solid hyperpop. I've never been huge on the genre, but it's pretty fun and at times even inventive. This is a solid listen and a fun time.
I went into this thinking "surely it can't be that bad". Most AOTY users see a blue star and instantly think bad of the album. But no, this is actually just really terrible. My main problem with this record is that it does not know what it wants to be. On one hand, it wants to be this pretentious spoken-word beauty of "female rage", except the lyrics are uninspired. She also tries to tap into Ethel Cain's style and imagery through the album cover and some of the ... read more
God DAMN I am just pulling gem after gem today from my backlog. It wasn't my intention to find 2 great post-rock works today, but this was a really good time. The thing that makes this so good is the sheer amount of energy that's put into each track. Songs don't flow into one another as smoothly, but each individual track will run on with such speed and intensity that it overwhelms you, especially in Skins and Wake Robin. The vocals are nice, too, and complement the tracks a ... read more
Damn, I was NOT expecting this to be as good as it was. I'm hesitant to write too much on this, since everyone says it's so inspired by Bruce Springsteen, and I admittedly have yet to listen to an album of his, but on its own this is a very solid album. Lots of strong vocal performance, fun instrumentation, and overall songs you can easily get lost in. It's fun, sad, and introspective at the same time, and there's no true weakness to it. It isn't amazing, but it's ... read more
