Overall, this album is pretty alright. Mac has some nice flow and nice writing here, and the beats can be great, but I dunno, I didn't feel too strongly about it. I thought it was good, but it's not anything I feel too strong about. Nice features and mature topics, and the beats on some songs (especially ROS) give some memorable moments, but this kinda feels forgettable. Not in any way bad, tho.
Just like how I rated Blue Slide Park and Macadelic the same score, I'm giving Watching Movies and Faces the same score.
Faces is by far Mac's best mixtape and it isn't even close. This project has a lot of gall being 90 minutes long, and having a cover as pretentious as this. However, this is such a shift in Miller's sound it's kind of wild. Faces sees Mac Miller seem to finally evolve into a state of genuine goodness.By this point, all the problems I've had with ... read more
Went into this one not expecting a lot, given the last few projects I've done in his deep dive, but no, this was actually pretty damn good. Mac Miller improves on a lot of the problems I had on his last couple of projects. For one, his writing has changed up to where it feels more introspective about himself. There are still hints of his old style lurking, but it's a very respectable shift, almost as if this is his first mature project. His production this time around also takes a bit ... read more
In many ways, this mixtape is both better and worse than the album that preceded it. Macadelic, as a project, is probably his most cohesive project since KIDS at this point in my deep dive. The vocal interludes in some tracks sort of tie the project together, and you also get tastes of an evolving Mac's sound. The production has very unique moments that stand out from other tracks, namely the closer and Clarity. You also see more features and also Mac starting to rap about different things ... read more
I think this album's user score mixed with the critic score makes this seem a lot worse than it actually is. Truth be told, this just sounds like Mac Miller's other stuff he was making around this time. This album tries to experiment a bit, but it doesn't succeed all too much. His flow and writing are starting to get to a point here where even if he is getting more creative, the same topics about banging girls and smoking weed and confidence are kinda starting to hold him back. I ... read more
This album was a pleasant surprise in a few ways. First, seeing that she's signed to the same label as boygenius, who also produced this album, I was definitely expecting a similar sound to them. At the same time, I was expecting a more artsy album judging by the cover. So, imagine my surprise when this album ended up being heavily focused on the vocals and writing, with near-minimalist production. I will admit that I wasn't feeling it for the first couple songs, but near the middle, ... read more
Ok so just coming out and saying this is a 10. Honestly it doesn't really feel like this album should exist. For her to release such an amazing album as her SECOND studio project, and only being in her 20s is one thing, but to have a sound like THIS in 2006 is another. It's so beautiful, because it's truly timeless. You forget everything when you listen to this. Everything beautifully blends together into an incredible 35-minute experience, but each song is also its own ... read more
Technically I listened to this since I listened to each mixtape in a row, so I'm gonna just log this too. Trilogy is a surprisingly raw piece of work that, while flawed, really can't be done by any big star. Even Abel in Hurry Up Tomorrow, despite being upfront about his drug problems, can't seem to show it as bluntly as in this mixtape. It seems like a tragedy, where shit will go down soon, and it's sprinkled between RnB beats and melodies. It's a really cool concept, ... read more
Will Wood is an artist that I somehow haven't listened to before this point. Despite having a giant Lemon Demon phase, a giant Tally Hall phase, currently being a massive fan of Jhariah, and having all of my IRL friends absolutely love this guy, I've somehow evaded his music before this point.
The best way I can describe this album is like insanity. Will wood and his band here have tons of versatility, and boy do they use it. Going from insanity to slower, more mellow songs, and back ... read more
This album is bad because it just doesn't feel like it's aged well at all. It's not inherently terrible, but it's just so repetitive and monotone the whole time. Every song sounds like the same, and usually it's the same lyric or riff repeated for the entire track, with nothingburger lyrics. I'm also not really a fan of the guy's voice. It could work in some contexts, but for this, it's just.. disappointing. It's like lot of the problems I had with ... read more
Overall, this album is a pretty fun time. It's definitely not a fully thought out mixtape, and instead just a mix of songs he made for fun, and you can tell he has that "fuck it we ball" energy in many points through here (It actually works in its favor by adding a comedic side to the first track). It's not any masterpiece, but it's also not really trying to be. It's just him jumping around and making up B-sides on the spot, which I respect. I probably won't ... read more
This is also a pretty solid mixtape, but it does admittedly feel a bit less unique than K.I.D.S. The pop rap sound is pretty cool, but does get a bit repetitive near the middle. The start is really good, and songs like I'll Be There really hit with me because it flows so well and you can tell he's making the song out of love. This album overall has a bit less to say about it; it does retain the fun energy of its predecessor, but it does feel a bit more produced than the past one, ... read more
I've been trying to listen to every 2025 release, but life keeps getting in the way, so I'm gonna do every Mac Miller release on Spotify before I do Balloonerism!
For a debut project from a white 18 year old rapper, this was honestly a LOT better than I expected. Even at such a young age, this mixtape is just fun and full of energy, and it's clear he knows what he's doing. Everything feels unified -- like, I can see how every song ends up on the same project, because they ... read more
What a sad, sad way to go out as a group. This doesn't even feel like an album because nothing is cohesive. It's so very clearly a desperate attempt at a final LP by Wham! before they broke up, done via scraping together leftovers from their back catalog to make a project. I guess I can appreciate the idea of splitting an album into a hot and cool side, but it still doesn't reflect that in its songs. only 3 of these songs were actually originally made for this album. Wham Rap 86 ... read more
I honestly did not remember much about this EP. Joji has some good ideas on this project, but the production really betrays him, almost making the tracks feel tiring because it feels like 2AM sad tunes with almost a muffled filter. It's a less refined sound of Ballads 1, which I wasn't even that big on to begin with.
Ok, so this album was like. it was an album alright. There are some solid tracks here, especially Die For You and Before The Day Is Over, but those moments are sprinkled in between songs that are more or less filler, either because they're too short, feel underdeveloped, or maybe a bit of both. An album should not be 24 minutes, I'm sorry, and there's not even a lot to make it stand out. It almost feels like a few singles and then all B-sides. The concept is cool but I really ... read more
Weird as fuck but I can respect it. It feels like having a panic attack on an acid trip, but in a good way. I enjoy the range of genres being produced here, from pop to dance music to rap to psychedelic ambient almost, and all of it has this funk overlay that's pretty cool to see. Some tracks are better than others, and sometimes its weirdness eclipses the quality (White Light), but overall it feels like a much more realized version of their debut self-titled, with better layering, mixing, ... read more
As much as it pains me to say I don't think this lived up to After Hours or Dawn FM. The production is slightly more low-key, there are some more fillery tracks, and it doesn't seem like a logical follow-up to Dawn FM. However, I don't really care. This is still a very good project with a lot of highs. Abel has a great voice still, and his writing is still very strong. The feature choice especially was really cool, with some unexpected choices for him, from Giorgio to Future to ... read more
See, this album has a lot of potential, and at the start it's really good, but throughout the album's course, it kind of loses its charm. It's consistent in sound, the singer's vocal qualities are good, and the instrumentation is very complex, but there's not a lot to set some tracks apart. It's not bad, just less good than the first 3 or 4 tracks has you believe. It tries a lot, but it lacks highs to keep more energy within the listener. A similar album to this ... read more
I don't really get the hate on this. Like, it doesn't live up to their self-titled, but it isn't really bad. The cons are that there are fewer highs than the self-titled, and the post-punk garage sound is more washed out now, but it's still a perfectly serviceable album with some nice tracks. It does lull a bit in the middle, but I think the score is a bit low for something that really isn't all that bad. Nothing award-worthy, but nothing a net negative.
