Some interesting concepts and ideas but they never go anywhere or lead to anything significant. It's all just vague atmosphere with zero concept or builds.
edit: I LOVE YOU JANE
this is definitely going to be the song ever made
Powerful. The concept is a clever and interesting idea, and one that was executed extremely well. The hushed tone of the singing, the songwriting that borders on tear jerking at times, the track list that keeps building and building only to lead to a very dramatic and cathartic climax in "Wake", it's all just so impactful. While at times the concept can feel a bit loose and the story can become a bit hard to follow, the overall message is well received.
Poor singing, decent production, boring songwriting and bad mixing... hm. Yeah, bit of a mixed bag, and definitely the most overrated album of this year. That Danny Brown feature was fucking amazing though honestly.
I spent my entire childhood believing that "Ocean Man" was a song that was made specifically for the Spongebob Squarepants movie and that it wasn't a real song that actually existed. My childhood is ruined.
Ok, time for an actual review for real.
Everything about this track feels immersive to me. From its opening synth alone, I immediately found myself hypnotized by this track. As it goes along it only seems to feel increasingly more entrancing to me, with the use of field recordings being a particularly amazing inclusion. Whenever I listen to it, hearing voices that are just obscured enough to where I can't hear what's being said, listening to the sound of people walking, the squeak of a shoe as ... read more
Oh man, I loved this. A wonderful combination of indie and folk rock with some of the cleanest production I've heard in a while. The singing is great, the instrumentation is impressive and at times beautiful, and those HORNS? Are you KIDDING ME?
Super overlooked, don't miss out.
I feel like this is one of those albums that I'm gonna have some sort of breakthrough listen with. While there are aspects of this I love, like the atmosphere and building on cuts like Terminus and One Lick Less, I also kept note of this album's downsides, one of the main ones being some pretty weak mixing in a few spots. Another being the terrible sound of the drums on We Invent You. The vocals were mostly fine though, nothing to write home about, especially since they were buried so deep in ... read more
It kind of hit me towards the very end of this project why it wasn't working for me in the same way that it does for so many others - this is a record that's trying to be so many things that it comes across as nothing to me. Is it ambitious and weird and in your face? Yes, definitely. But for me, this also meant that the whole thing blended into this weird, multicolored mess that doesn't leave the listener with anything substantive. It all just sounded the same to my ears.
Some rough mixing here and there, but overall it's really serene and pretty.
Really wanted to be able to come on here and defend this as being super underrated and actually really good after all, but at the end of the day... I mean, it is just a soundtrack. I don't know what I expected, honestly. I think the focus being taken away from her guitar is interesting, sure, but did I care all that much in the grand scheme of things? Not really. As much as I love her, this is just a soundtrack, and nothing more.
hadn't heard this one in a while, teared up a little bit by the end. it simply means more to me than i could ever put into words, and thus, i will likely never review it. thank you jeff mangum very cool
Hypnotizingly beautiful. I entered a bliss state during the first two stages, and was met with pure euphoria as the third stage entered in and my mind became completely absorbed in this album's low res, digital soundscapes. A must listen for those with even the slightest appreciation for vaporwave.

As expected, I loved it! One of the dreamiest and most hypnotic listens out there. The sound design, particularly for a live set, is absolutely outstanding as well, and in general the atmosphere of this thing is just impeccable. Also, Long Season? Once in a lifetime. It has to be the greatest live performance of all time. It has to be! How do you get any better than that?
Very few hip hop albums are able to bring you to a high with these loud, aggressive, energy filled bangers, only to very quickly bring you down to some pretty devastating lows within a matter of minutes quite as effectively as iridescence. It's not all great, but the highs are high enough to more than make up for some of this LP's weakest moments.
After the first few tracks here, I was ready to write this album off as being too esoteric and minimal to really be something that I could enjoy all that much. While I still standby my opinions that the first handful of tracks here are too lacking in musical progression or intrigue to be anywhere near songs that I love, the last three tracks here are great and end the record off strong. Nico's songwriting is amazing even this early on, as well. Maybe it's worth a second listen, who knows.
"Sometime in the Spring of 2009 I tried to kill myself. Six months before that, I used a Voor's Head Device for the first time. I sat in front of a piano, and slid the hood over my face. Immediately, I felt the room contract. After that, only flashes. Half-memories. The tape recorder on the table clicked to a stop an hour later. I was on the floor, the hood next to me, crumpled into a heap. Featureless. I couldn't remember how I'd come to be there. It was several days before I could bring ... read more
