Right so I’ve heard this maybe twice, ever. And as far as I can remember it’s not really for me but I can really understand why someone else might like it. It has me on the edge, is it great? Is it too spacious and boring? I don’t know I can’t decide.
I don’t think anybody really liked it when it came out, and I don’t think anybody regularly revisits it now. It’s not as bad as some people will have you think, but it’s not great and a little baffling how it followed up saucerful of secrets. Hey, I guess they were trying something new and inventive. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.
I have cried to a lot of the tracks on this album many times. It’s gut wrenching. Also a lot of the compositions are actually immensely good, belying the very low-tech DIY production and lack of ostensible musicianship. This is what music is about, this is a truly stunning way to channel pain and difficulty.
I’m glad he later broadened his songwriting horizons. By no means bad- his voice is surprisingly soothing on this album and the lyrics are catchy and distinctive but I would get bored if these were the only kinds of songs he could write.
Lyrically touching but the melody and music is too benign and gentle to stir anything up in my head.
I don’t know how to feel about that word in this context. Misguided and unknowingly inappropriate is maybe the best way to describe it. Regardless, some great music from a true pioneer.
What a weird mix of songs. Vegetables cracks me up, they’ve got the sound of vegetables getting crunched haha who writes a track like that.
Died at 17. The insanity of it. This guy never got to be an adult and he was still part of changing the shape of music in the 50s. Oh what could have been.
The last respectable Stones album. Starts off really good but doesn’t get any better or offer anything we haven’t heard before.
I don’t know why so many people like this album so much. My experience of it is always starts off good, continually gets worse until the last track where there’s a slight redemption. Its a real shame that no pre-beggars banquet stones album is good the whole way through. I think they could have done with touring less and focusing on studio output around 1966/7.
Inconsistent and harbouring more filler material than genuinely good tracks. But where it stikes gold its incredible. Assuming we’re talking about the UK version, Mother’s little helper, Under my Thumb, Lady Jane and Going Home are brilliant. It’s also a little uncanny how much they resemble an early kinks sound at times.
Will always have time for this. And its incredibly rare that I can’t separate ANY tracks in order of preference or wish one wasn’t there in favour of another one in the discography. Solid effort the whole way through, and perfectly written and executed for what it is.
Maybe another one of my guilty pleasures. It’s a bit uninteresting by today’s standards but I love the energy. All right now is red hot though I don’t care what anybody says. And it’s not quite in the domain of horribly overplayed either.
Has its moments, but honestly its a bit bland for my liking and I can’t see it snapping anyone’s head round. Good, inoffensive, easy listening with two or three standout tracks- would never object to having it on in the background, but a bit stale to sit down and devote lots of attention to.
