Its an odd one for me because I feel like I really liked it but I don’t know whether I enjoyed it. Maybe it was a mood thing. It feels like it almost happens upon a really unique cool sound but doesn’t quite grab it or stay in it for very long.
I don’t know why I didn’t give this a 100. Maybe it deserves it, maybe I just got too used to it. It’s unarguably one of the all time classics though and people will still be listening to it in 100 years and getting just as excited.
Cements their status as more than just a band, adding a little more spice and diversity to their discography and overall sound. Ranges from mystical and strange (no quarter) to unexpected (rain song, d’yer maker, the crunge). The hell is a crunge anyway.
Yeah idk why they released this like a studio album. Its a bunch of demos and leftovers and none of them are particularly exciting or fun. Drumming is a highlight but that’s a given.
Raw and bluesy, and there’s a swagger throughout the album as if they know full well how good they are. But its definitely nowhere near as strong as their next 5 albums track for track and production wise. More of a statement of intent album than a masterpiece in my opinion.
I don’t have the words to describe why this is one of the best albums ever recorded so you’re just going to have to trust me. It’s also a perfect aggregation of all of Wait’s best songwriting in my opinion, so for anyone wanting to get into his discography I would recommend starting here.
If this is just the bits and bobs he had lying around, someone needs to follow this man around all day with a microphone just in case.
Don’t understand how somebody can be this consistent and prolific at a relatively late stage in their career. Tom Waits is a miracle. This is over three hours long and I have sat down and listened to it all multiple times and not regretted a single second.
A truly beautiful DIY job from a completely unknown artist. Some really feel-good brilliant compositions like Cold Tea, The Now and Sweet Dreams. Farm Musical is probably my favourite- very quirky and joyful. Some real surprises like Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy blow me away at times and I can only imagine what they’d sound like with proper production. Even more exciting things to come? Let’s hope.
I truly believe Roy Harper is a folk legend and this is his best album but why tf does it open with China Girl? Easily the worst track on there. Other than that its really beautiful and I come back to it again and again. Highlights: My Friend, Girlie, Blackpool, Forever. Mr station master would also be right at home with any of the best psychedelic organ-led 60s tunes.
The last of the great Kinks material. Similar vibes to muswell hillbillies for quite a few tracks but then some really cool fresh inclusions like sitting in my hotel and maximum consumption. Still not sure what I think of celluloid heroes but its probably a solid track even if not quite my cup of tea.
This is phenomenal. Coherent sound all the way through, disorientating, utterly unique. Seemingly very diversely influenced. The tracks are short as hell, but flow seamlessly from one to the next and are all catchy in their own way, and did I mention WEIRD. The narrative is deranged, but occasionally really witty and poetic. A good splash of spoken word here and there but never too much to change the very melodic feel of the album.
If you like short, energetic punk tracks then it simply doesn’t get better than this. Delicious, crunchy and wobbly guitar tones. Some synth-y spice and subject matter varies from quasi-deep and abstract to completely frivolous. Two bugs is what I wish the Ramones were like. Man I love this record I don’t know why these guys aren’t huge yet.
This is fucking joyous. Bizarre. Truly extraordinary and I’m obsessed with it.
An absolute riot. This is what post punk is all about, the lines are brilliant, dry and relentless. My one qualm used to be that they recycled the same or similar sound for most of the album so I wouldn’t feel like putting it straight back on after a listen but now I’m kinda thinking that that’s part of the charm. They don’t care. Its hypnotic flirting with monotonous but never quite going all the way. In the right mood, there’s nothing better and this band have my ... read more
It’s hard to be able tell when you’re just so used to an album that it becomes great and when it’s actually great. But I genuinely think this has something special. It excited me on the first listen way back, ergo it’s exciting.
Uniquely dark, fun and interesting in a lot of ways but lacking some of the oomph that I really liked about their debut.
