This is a good step in the right direction after Gemini which is a mistep in their catalog. This album isn't perfect but has many more ideas going for it and a sonic pallet that is more appealing as a fan of this bands material in the early 2000s. The album is more political in nature and it works half the time but sometimes seems a little aimless. Overall, the album is a shift towards a better sound for the band.
For an album that is outwardly concerned with contemporary political issues, “Vitriola” is so preoccupied with trying to recapture the allure of earlier Cursive records that it comes off as stuck in the past. On a surface level, “Vitriola” *does* succeed in sounding like “The Ugly Organ,” and the return of the cello is probably the record’s greatest asset.
