Dylan set out to record new songs—and released a double album of cover versions he fooled around with between takes! Pretty silly, overall.

A deliberately sprawling affair that runs the gamut from self-portrait to self-parody.

Self Portrait was a disaster that nobody has really ever explained: a double album of deliberately bad throwaways, most of them grumpy covers.

It took Mr. Dylan ten albums to reach his first major dud. I don't care how much you dislike this album, it's a fucking achievement for an artist to go through an entire decade of consistently pumping out albums and their first miss being their tenth release.

Super underrated and over-hated album. @cwhit you had me worried that this was going to be the end of days, I enjoyed this a lot. If not for a few truly terrible live tracks, I would even call this a great album. Who cares if he only wrote a small fraction of the songs, his debut was mostly covers and I consider that to be a great album.

A few song notes:

The opener “All The Tired Horses” features absolutely zero Bob Dylan. All lead vocals are done by a chorus of female vocalist ... read more
