Lizzy McAlpine - five seconds flat
80

I've been listening to a lot of sad singing women lately, yet Ms. McAlpine may actually end up being the saddest. Exquisitely horrible for my mental health, especially ceilings. Great. Thanks.

Favourite Song: ceilings

Best: doomsday, erase me, all my ghosts, reckless driving, firearm, hate to be lame, chemtrails, orange show speedway

Worst: weird

Olivia Dean - The Art of Loving

The singles held some promise in reviving the Winehouse, Adele, and Sade pop-soul niche that's been left untapped for a little while in the mainstream, however whilst achieving that goal to a degree, a few songs are over-polished, and a couple of awkward lines end up dampening the maturity behind the writing. Undisputedly very well made though, and Nice To Each Other remains one of my favourite songs from this year. It'll be a struggle to come across a more easy-going album of late. ... read more

Ninajirachi - I Love My Computer

Favourite Song: iPod Touch

Best: London Song, Fuck My Computer, CSIRAC, Delete, ฅ^•ﻌ•^ฅ, All I Am, Infohazard, Battery Death, It's You, All At Once

Worst: Sing Good

Phoebe Bridgers - Stranger in the Alps
80

Sometimes I like to think that I'm doing relatively okay, and then Scott Street slams a sledgehammer straight in my brain. A really gorgeous album, and it's no surprise that Bridgers has most likely become the most quintessential indie/folk artist of the last decade.

Favourite Song: Scott Street

Best: Smoke Signals, Motion Sickness, Funeral, Georgia, You Missed My Heart

Worst: Would You Rather

Hayley Williams - Petals for Armor

II > III > I

Worst: Basement Scene

Geese - Getting Killed
90

THERE'S A [redacted] IN MY [redacted]!!!!!

Far superior to 3D Country, and far superior to Heavy Metal as an overall piece. I think Heavy Metal has more special glimmers in terms of singular songs, but as an album this is by far the best overall Winter project. A knockout from the underground's self-proclaimed 'froggy' darling.

Favourite Song: Au Pays du Cocaine

Best: Trinidad, Cobra, Husbands, Getting Killed, Islands of Men, 100 Horses, Bow Down, Taxes, Long Island City ... read more

Favourite Song: milk of the madonna

Best: my mind is a mountain, locked club, ecdysis, infinite source, i think about you all the time, cut hands

Worst: departing the body

John Mayer - Battle Studies
75

It takes a few listens to make the deeper cuts feel substantial, but the overtly best stuff is so overtly good that it could carry the deep cuts even if they were awful. And the deeper cuts aren't awful, they're maybe just a little poppy, clean or gimmicky at times.

Favourite Song: Edge of Desire

Best: Heatbreak Warfare, Half of My Heart, Who Says, Assassin, War of My Life, Friends Lovers or Nothing

Worst: All We Ever Do Is Say Goodbye

Hayley Williams - Ego Death At A Bachelorette Party
95

Worst: Brotherly Hate

Addison Rae - Addison
60

God I hate the direction that pop song length is heading in. What happened to bridges? Or third verses? Or anything after the second chorus? Or at LEAST three minute run times?

The production is well handled and the atmosphere of each song is definitely present, her overall output just needs a little more refining as it feels like Addison's firing on all cylinders with how many styles she's going for. Also, her very Britney-esque 'everyone hates me because I'm amazing, ... read more

"@NeedlefluuJr Hehe no worries. The beauty with art is that our opinions and views on things change over time, and when people invite you to look back and reassess something it's always a nice feeling regardless if it's something you do or don't enjoy. I'm very much an opinionated person but sometimes I can be a bit harsh, so thanks for highlighting my WAY TOO harsh score. No piece of art deserves a 0 unless it's actively offensive or devoid of any integrity, which is rarely ever the case, and this song certainly doesn't fit that category especially because Simz is a true from the heart story teller. I hope that going from 0 to 30 has increased the songs average rating by at least 0.1% 😎"

"Yeah Conor definitely put in an underperformance on this one. Going from his beautiful ballads on the self-tilted to his booming screeches on the Broken Machine bangers, to then landing on a laid back not-even-trying indie pop rock whimper is kind of jarring. Still a good album IMO but as a vocalist he's been pushed to the sidelines by inconsistent synth pop formulas and idk how to feel about it."

"@bfranco I wrote this review 2 years ago when I did not know as much about music generally, so trust me when I say that I have known for a while after writing this review that the lead plays a heavily beefed up bass (mainly because it's the only thing that the band has going for them 😅). Sorry that I got it wrong in the past, I am a changed man now!"
