Charles Mingus - The Clown
80

Knowing the depressive context behind these tracks do make the music much darker but overall Mingus has better albums. I wasn’t really blown away by anything I heard. Not to say it wasn’t REALLY good but to say this album is hyped up is an understatement. Last track was really good and REALLY dark. It’s pretty famous in jazz history now but it’s literally just about a clown committing public suicide to get one last laugh. Damn.

slowthai - UGLY

I wish this album was more in line with the last track. It just felt like a drag. I don’t get the hype, man, I really don’t and I tried. A lot of it came off as very cringey and whiny even if what he was rapping/singing about was really deep. I applaud him for experimenting, and that’s why I don’t hate it, but I certainly don’t like it and think it’s a mess. I don’t get the hype but deep down I do see the appeal, UK rap has just never hit really.

Zulu - A New Tomorrow
90

I’m thankful this month is off to a good start because music wise these first two months of the year were not at all it.

Equal parts head piercing and also melodic and soulful, it’s a fantastic album. Also love that it’s a Black band, we don’t have enough of those in hardcore scenes. This needs more mainstream exposure fs. Ik the hate5six videos of this band are gonna be wild.

Willie Nelson - I Don't Know a Thing About Love
25

It’s Willie Nelson so obviously it’s interesting enough to keep my attention but it’s just so uninspired man. I can’t really ask much more from a dude who’s basically just running a victory lap at this point, I just didn’t like this snooze.

It has a tendency to wear its influences too much on its sleeve, but overall, Dogsbody is probably the aoty so far, although this could do with the year just starting off not great music wise.

I think sometimes they’re trying to be too much like Downward Spiral NIN which isn’t a bad goal to set but Downward Spiral is straight up the greatest paced album of all time so it’s not a bar they can raise to and meet. Overall, it’s an amazing album with these minor criticisms ... read more

Skrillex - Don't Get Too Close

How this man has any devoted fanbase is wild.

In Flames - Foregone
76

The cheesy more acoustic cuts are just that… really cheesy, but this is a formidable return to In Flames’ melodic death metal sound. Had a great time. This year hasn’t started off very well musically imo, so this is up there.

Pierce The Veil - The Jaws of Life
29

Oof. I never listened to this band before but I went in with a generally open mind. Some of these songs I might enjoy in shame but most are just downright bad. The last is awful. This is the emo I could imagine people hating. Brutal listen.

PinkPantheress & Ice Spice - Boy's a liar Pt. 2
96

This is fantastic lol wtf

Killing Seasons - When I'm Home Alone and I Hear a Noise, I Sit and Listen for Ages
78

Fantastic underground slowcore. And it's from Texas. It is almost sounds kind of like Salvia Plath and Duster mixed in with a bit of blues and post-punk, it's really cool. Maybe even some Bedhead influences, which would make sense since they were a Dallas sound too.

Kind of off-topic but the naming situation is weird asf, and I tried to dig into it but it seems like their social media presence has been wiped. I believe they were originally named Papergirl, although they either changed their ... read more

Fucked Up - One Day

Holy shit. This is really bad. Skull emoji skull emoji skull emoji.

WHAT HAPPENED??? every time the band came across a cool little musical passage it would be ruined by these really grating, EXTREMELY gravelly screaming vocals. It almost sounded like a metal Tom Waits… and I do not like Tom Waits lol. This was just unfathomable though. I can respect Tom Waits voice even if it is incredibly harsh, but this is just insane. It’s the worst parts of metalcore mixed with gravel. I was ... read more

Ava Max - Diamonds & Dancefloors

Taking the worst qualities from Charli XCX, Dua Lipa, and The Weeknd all at once to create one of the most creatively bankrupt albums I've heard in a long time.

Björk - Björk
70

Björk 1/?

I’ve listened to all of Björk’s albums and I absolutely used to love her so I’m revisiting them. This was the only album I had not listened to.

I mean… I’m never gonna listen to it again, but it’s adorable. It really is. Fuck Allmusic.

Mac DeMarco - Five Easy Hot Dogs
42

Mac DeMarco has to be one of my favorite musicians currently. Whenever he’s interviewed, he has such a chill and calm demeanor and it’s impossible not to smile from it. Besides being down-to-earth, in many ways he’s also a visionary. A lot of his very 80s reminiscent jangle was from a time where it had not yet taken mainstream attention.

With credit out the way, this was not good. I didn’t dislike any song, but as a whole unit, they didn’t work. Mac phoned it in. ... read more

Sam Smith - Gloria

It’s not great but not horrible… or even bad. It’s a well mixed, charming album with plenty of sweet sentiments. At worst it’s discount Charli xcx. The hate for this, while entertaining, isn’t warranted imo.

Cocteau Twins - Milk and Kisses
94

Cocteau Twins 19/19

Welp, that’s it. By this point, the band was broken up. They would support the album with touring, but the band was already disestablished really.

I can understand why someone wouldn’t like this album. It has some really strange fusions of pop and trip hop that are just kinda weird, but they’re some of the best combinations the Cocteau Twins could’ve had this era. Those murky ass keys too. Damn. Give me that tone and I’m literally swooning. I ... read more

Cocteau Twins - Otherness
95

Cocteau Twins 18/?

This, for some reason, is what I would argue to be the culmination of the Cocteau Twins sound. Ethereal, thoughtful, nostalgic, noisy, beautiful… this EP, if made longer, and on streaming services, would be pretty much the Cocteau Twin’s masterpiece. Every track in equal part is incredible.

Cocteau Twins - Twinlights
85

Cocteau Twins 17/?

More stripped back but an excellent follow up to the otherwise incredibly disappointing Four Calendar Cafe. It sounds dejected and painful but beautiful at the same time.

Lil Yachty - Let's Start Here.

Mediocre psychedelic rap. What’s the appeal lol.

2-19-2023 EDIT: looking back on this, idk why i said rap, because it isn’t a rap album, so apologies. i still stand by the fact it’s just kinda mid though. respect to Lil Yachty for the evolution though.

"in this era. Not specifically blues rock bands like Led Zeppelin, but more folk/progressive classic bands of the era. 4. The Led Zeppelin III review was extremely harsh but that’s always been an album I hated. Even when I was young. It was just always so bizarre. 5. So in conclusion, a lot of the contradictions and moments of over-hating in this review were really just a consequence of me being younger and being new to this site. I am able to articulate my opinion way better now. But I am very thankful and flattered that you would revisit each one of my reviews now. I don’t think I could I feel like it would be pretty embarrassing lol. [done]"

"3. So you aren’t aware of my series. And that’s fine. I’m not a celebrity lol. This was the first “hate listen” I did on this site. I did “hate listens” for Led Zeppelin, R.E.M, AC/DC, and am now doing one for Dream Theater. My goals with all of these series was to hopefully get over my hatred of these bands. R.E.M. i exited actually liking. AC/DC i exited still disliking but realizing that not ALL of their stuff is bad. I’m not done with Dream Theater, but they had good earlier albums, and were a better band when they were more atmospheric, sparring, and less corny. As Led Zeppelin was the first series, and also I was just younger, I was a lot more uncharitable. But my intention was always to have them grow on me. I love plenty of bands 3/"

"other white artists took that as inspiration. i still stand by what i said even if i haven’t listened to it in a while. when led zeppelin took more soul/reggae sounds, it often flat out didn’t work. also, not to play this card, but like, i am polish. i’m not saying i can’t have opinions prejudiced against whites, but questioning a band which already has a controversial modern reputation for taking from black art, i don’t think is really that. they just try to do sounds that black artist do but don’t have the soul to do so really. just feels like a mcdonald’s burger versus a burger from a local bbq diner in the deep south. big difference. 2/?"

"@LemmyDjonsson alright so a lot to un pack here. 1. kashmir is the band’s most overrated, not whole lotta love. i’ll cover why there’s that confusion. more in 5 2. regarding d’yer mak’er, my point still kind of stands. i’m not saying white people can’t make reggae, but reggae is an art form that comes from black areas. it comes from jamaica and the caribbean. led zeppelin made this in the early 1970s, before the internet was a thing. because of this, i was kinda worried how they treated the reggae sound. because it’s a lot easier to be aware of the history and to listen to smaller jamaican and jamaican diaspora artists nowadays, but at the time, let’s face it, a lot of white artists took black art, succeeded commercially, and then 1/?"

"@BikerSK such a weird comment lol. you have no clue what you’re talking about so i’m not that shocked. i have a series on aoty where i “hate listen” to discographies, but it’s all done with the concept of an open mind. the first band i listened to was led zeppelin, who i came out still not liking. the second band was r.e.m, who ironically i actually ended up liking. one of my favorite songs of all time is airportman, which is on one of their weirder later albums. the third band was ac/dc who i also ended not liking. this is NOT to just pile on music, but instead a brutally honest effort to evaluate why i might not like the band. so if you don’t know what you’re talking about don’t comment. i’m not gonna tolerate your drivel."
