I have no quarrel with this man or his music. But for the love of God PLEASE stop playing this sound everywhere! The song is not good enough for it to be wrung out this much. It's drenched in inspiration from another rapper just to be washed down a tad.
Self reflection and bottled trauma crafted into a beautiful album styled with theatrics. Kendrick decides to wear his heart on his sleeve, leaving a clear divide in listeners. Some may want to hear him and understand the pain, others may not care for how personal he gets. You can guess which side I stand on.
Appreciative of how bold and turbulent the opener is, I have a personal enjoyment for bands that tend to be so smooth yet can also get rough around the edges when they see fit. Between the recklessness of the drums and heightened energy within the horns, they've really got me hooked.
I only wish the intro kind of expanded a bit longer and let the instrumental sort of mold into something a bit more drastic to end off with extreme excitement, but I'm still hooked nonetheless. From ... read more
After hearing the single for the album, I felt a sense of confusion and wondered "why such a drastic change in direction?" They had just released PetroDragonic and I loved it. However it seems I was too quick to distrust such a legendary group that has well over enough accomplishing albums. Listening the first few times I didn't feel what they were going for but after I couple listens I sat down and focused. To my surprise I slowly started to appreciate the southern rock sound, ... read more
Why did they do this? lol. Just listen to the originals. I don't understand how people like the no scrubs cover. I will admit it is pretty comical hearing Rivers sing it though.
ITS ONE LONG RIDE
Soothing cinematic sounds, nothing jarring or in your face. The album evokes a sense of wonder and curiosity into it's listeners, the constant rhythmic xylophone sounds bringing energy and colorful vibrance. The violins softly making it's presence known in the background. Nothing is trying to outshine each other, instead every element works harmonious in an effort to create this mystical journey sound.
More like Ultra 80
Logic deserves a round of applause for his combative efforts against those who tirelessly stay up at night clowning him for his inconsistent work (I am one of them). Logic is indeed a "rollercoaster rapper" sometimes giving you that good stuff and other times giving you mush. Right now we have once again reached a new height on the ride, thanks to ULTRA 85! Logic is in his hip-hop lyrical miracle bag for the most part with some actual heavy hearted and worthwhile ... read more
This.. this is the cusp of perfection. The topics McKinley touches about family and unity, poetically speaking on troubles within his community and more importantly himself. The conscious lyricism is so carefully constructed getting each point across in a powerful yet subtle manner. Every song holds weight with soulful singing or jazzy instrumentals to back it up. Even something as monotonous as "protective styles" sounds so beautiful and important to the story. I think if Beloved! ... read more
I genuinely want MORE songs on this album. The rap performances, the jazz influence, the substance in lyrics, and the storytelling are all amazing. My only problem is how fast it goes by, So much potential in McKinley's craft. It's clear he's inspired by great artists and is headed in a smart direction. The album concept is there but just waiting to be fully realized and planned out. Very soon do I see a masterpiece in his hands.
Glad to know I'm not the only one annoyed by housekeeping knows, it's use of sampling is insanely revolting to me. 'It's up' is a pretty good song but that's as far as I'd go in positives. Every track manages to feel a bit spacious and empty at times, nothing exceptional done on Drakes part in the last two tracks. 100 gigs of files and these were the big 3 that made Drake go "Yea they gon' fw this".
The very definition of mediocre. I can't grasp what this album wants to be and clearly neither does Kenny. He sets us up with "Jumpin in", which is a pretty calm rap song and sets the tone for the next few tracks. Then we get a more melodic track with "money signs" and the beat sounds like it came off of youtube but that's beside the point. Afterwards we move to the track titled "US" WHICH IS ROCK ORIENTED!? Yes the lyrics are pretty emotional and ... read more
I can't keep doing this.
Mixing: garbage
Features: boring
Kanye lyrics: weak (literally mumbles on 530)
Sky City: Ruined (listen to Yandhi version)
River: Overproduced (unreleased version was better)
Am I shocked? no
Peggy has such an authentic ear for quality with every release. JPEGMAFIA is what you'd call an acquired taste with his arbitrary synths, rugged drums, and overall over the top production. However, once you break past the barrier and feel the energy, it feels so great.
Not only do we get the classic JPEG sound with all of it's dangerous components, we also get a lighter and more emotional side out of him. Toward the end it's more of a mellow project speaking on his mental state ... read more
"When sh*t hits the fan, is you still a fan"
There's a variety of words to describe this art piece. Cultivating, poetic, bona fide, expressive, etc. I call it an art piece rather than an album because it breaks every surface of being "just music". The term alone 'To Pimp a Butterfly' holds weight as it alludes to pimping out something so beautiful and innocent and fragile (aka how black culture is exploited and misused by the United States.) Not only does it ... read more
A pretty refreshing taste of hip hop that feels pleasant on the ears. No gimmicks or wasted efforts, just pure lyricism and abstract production.

Although I'm not a big fan of the album, I'll give credit where it's due as he exhibits raw vocal talent. Bryant doesn't really create his own atmosphere or shine a light of personal significance. I've heard many lowkey laidback lofi artists that display the exact same energy as him. In my opinion nothing here feels fresh, creative, or above mediocre. The lyrics are pretty mushy and surface level, they come off more gimmicky than moving. It's the emotional vocals ... read more
