I gotta be honest, as a long time Kendrick fan I expected more than this. His albums are usually so conceptual and have extremely dense instrumentation, I did not feel that present here in the same way. I’m guessing he feels like he doesn’t need to prove himself by making a grand narrative or whatever, but it just makes me sad. All this album does is make me want to listen to his older material.
The album in it's most complete form, but what in the fuck is this tracklist? I'm dumbfounded
At the risk of sounding like an absolute twat, I think this is merely a soulless bastardization of better soul music that came out over 50 years ago. WSG has this amazing ability to synthesize Buffalo gangsta culture with European luxury. I've yet to see someone execute this aesthetic so perfectly, both sonically and visually.
Good, but not great. When it comes to Ye perfection is expected, and sadly some of these tracks still feel unfinished. We probably have another TLOP situation: "Imma fix Junya" lol.
Really fun album, with occasionally some all too on-the-nose lyricism.
I mean, it's pretty good? Some of the songs feel underdeveloped with sparser production. I feel like this is kinda overrated.
Really solid project, but the third track left me wanting more of a sound that wasn't really present on the remaining tracks.
Solid rap project with a few duds. The inclusion of some more trap-oriented rappers as features was very interesting and gave the album some character.
EDIT: My excitement for this wore off very quickly, I don’t think lyricism is very impressive nor the production, except for the beat that was straight copied of Westside Gunn. I’d like to add that JUGGERNAUT is the most overrated song on here.
