Vince Staples - Cry Baby
96

Speechless on first listen. Vince delivered a masterpiece. So much going on with this record, even if it can intentionally feel like it’s refraining from saying too much. I’ve always felt undertones from Vince’s music that he might express some of his looming frustrations towards society and the like in a larger fashion. And fucking god damn Cry Baby came to slay. This feels less intimate than the last several recorded from him but I’m so enamored with the sounds ... read more

feeble little horse - bitknot

Wow. This album hits such an effortless stride from Rewind on. I am so surprised by this record. Such charming and layered stoner noise pop that rewards on many listens with some nice details. Reminds me of when I first got into Crumb.

fakemink - Terrified .

Oh look another rage weirdo putting out sloppy mid. This was a snooze fest of a concept album let alone a collection of singles.

JPEGMAFIA - EXPERIMENTAL RAP
63

Idk man, def didn’t expect to not vibe with this the way I have with his stuff since Veteran but something feels a bit off with this record. Dude needs to start trying to write differently, swear I heard “fucking on” or some variant of that in several songs WAYYYY too much compared to previous albums. Peggy’s weakest since Black Ben Carson, and by far his most incoherent rapping on a record. Not a single memorable track on here for me unfortunately which is shocking ... read more

Deante' Hitchcock - Junkie in The Sun

God Damn Deante'!!!! This shit smacked me in the face this beautiful Friday morning. Thank you sir.

monte booker - noise ( meaning )

connected with this one rather late, really love the overall concept/vibe that Monte is attempting to capture here. it feels tender, sincere, warm, and a bit fun at times. but the little production flourishes from monte make it feel like his own little pocket of sunshine. i love the usage of "walking through halos" on the smino introduction and how that transitions in an interlude of sorts with the Vita track. cleanse, pink, awake all feel like loose song concepts but i can't get ... read more

underscores - U

Ah shit man this is what I NEED from my pop music. Hell yeah. This shit kicks ass. Crunchy production, bubbly melodies, great song concepts. Hyperpop artists always dropping the fire around Feb/March to gear us up for the sun.

James Blake - Trying Times
90

Absolutely my favorite record Blake has released in some time. I must revisit his last few because I don't remember connecting as much with the material on those but this one just feels so right from song concepts, production, to vocals. Been a while since I've really loved a record from Blake despite really liking him overall, so I'm very pleased with Trying Times.

Choker - Heaven Ain't Sold
81

Who the fuck needs a new Frank Ocean record when we have Choker dammit?

On the real the wait for this was worth it aside from a few tracks. Some of Choker's strongest songwriting on this record.

Joji - Piss In The Wind
72

This is tough, wish I could score this higher but he didn't flesh out basically ALL of the tracks I seem to like, so it hurts the experience a bit. People were saying the oklou record from last year didn't feel fleshed out, but this man is leaving his best works unfinished or straight up cutting off once they feel like they're getting into a groove or about to go somewhere and IT'S MADDENING Y'ALL!!! I wasn't anticipating this very much so I'm not mad, but if ... read more

By Storm - My Ghosts Go Ghost
95

Abstract but more raw and honest than a lot of records I've heard in years. Some lines in this record cut through so hard it hurts. The last album that made me feel this way was Excelsior by Slauson Malone. Safe to say I live for this sort of shit in music.

Kid Cudi - Free
63

This is definitely more refined than his WZRD work, if a bit generic at times for my taste, but I do like some of the more tender cuts on this. Cudder post punk/psych rock album when?!?!!?! Come on Cudi, take this shit to the next level and give us that psychedelic brain melt shit maaaannn. I need some Cudder infused with that Black Midi, King Gizz, King Krule, etc. sorta sound man lmao

On the real I'm really happy he's still doing his thing even if I don't think any of his ... read more

Loyle Carner - hopefully !

God dammit this man manages to make me cry with every album he releases. 😭😭

Such a soul baring record, the song lyin' stopped me in my tracks on first listen. He's a damn poet man. So sharp with words. The production on this might be my favorite of all of his albums too, and the singing sort of gives King Krule who i love quite a bit so I thought this suited Loyle perfectly. Great stuff. Not many rappers/artists can capture moments/ideas like this.

Black Country, New Road - Forever Howlong
NR

Holy shit man, I don't really do reviews but I just had to say that Two Horses is FUCKING PEAK!!!!!!!

Christopher Owens - I Wanna Run Barefoot Through Your Hair
NR

So glad he's back at it. I honestly didn't think we'd hear from Chris again. This album takes me back to when I first discovered Girls in high school. Oh how naive and starry eyed I was. Somehow the time between now and then has made the release of this album much sweeter. Glad we're both still walking this Earth, Chris!

quickly, quickly - From The Morning
90

Nick Drake's music means so much to me. Pink Moon and his other works have been around damn near my entire life to soothe me through hard times. At the same time, quickly quickly's debut record really connected with me in it's theming. It has a delicate sort of feeling similar to Nick Drake's music. Anyhow, I didn't ever expect this cover... he faithfully captures the tenderness of Drake's music, while adding his fleeting touches to modernize it in a beautiful way. ... read more

Nala Sinephro - Endlessness
95

Honestly, what the fuck? How does someone make an album so chock full of perfect fleeting moments? There are about a hundred or so little stretches on this album that just make me feel so many things at once. It's wondrous. I feel like we get a handful of jazz releases that stretch beyond the imagination every year, and Nala's record "Endlessness" most certainly falls into that category.

I live for music releases like this one!

Ravyn Lenae - Bird's Eye

Ay bruh that Pilot song had me like 😭😭😭😭😭 last night

JPEGMAFIA - I LAY DOWN MY LIFE FOR YOU
95

Peggy is my Spirit Animal!

"This album is for me"

I LAY DOWN MY LIFE FOR YOU! might be JPEGMAFIA's most introspective and experimental album to date. It certainly shows he's not going anywhere, and not done taking risks with his music. With the release of "don't rely on other men" and "SIN MIEDO," he set a good tone for what to expect with this album, moving into a darker, more sinister and hateful realm, finally capping off with a semblance of ... read more

"Imagine defending a delusional fucking weirdo in 2024, especially if you're a grown ass adult. I try to write off the younger ones glazing him up, as I was obsessed with dude back in 2013/14. Unfortunately a lot can change in ten years and Kanye is largely washed aside from his production talent."

On Rollo_P's review of Isaiah Rashad - The House Is Burning
"Agreed on the comparisons. I guess I just tend to keep Zay/Cudi in their own lanes and not compare too much to other artists with different skillsets/sounds. Tyler did hit me deep with Wilshire though on Call Me if You Get Lost, and other songs on previous records over the years! Yeah, if you don't really know what dude has been through to get this album out, then I understand why many here are disappointed expecting something wild or expansive after 5 years, but I feel much like I felt with Cudi releasing albums over the years. The music is still solid, and they're still around, doing seemingly better than before and that's all we can hope for as fans."
On Rollo_P's review of Isaiah Rashad - The House Is Burning
"Nice take on the record, guess I can't expect folks to elaborate more on why they don't seem to like it, but a lot of the takes on the album seem lazy to me. Think you really gotta be into the hazy sort of hip-hop sound that he offers, akin to Cudi and others."
On Rater's review of slowthai - TYRON
"Well done. Very thoughtful and graceful review. Feels pretty akin to my own thoughts on the album, but incredibly articulated. Here's to hoping he can come with something more provocative on his next record."
