One of their better records
Favorites: Armory of Obsidian Glass, Ygramul the Many, Aria of Juuled Tears, Silmaril, Burning Myrrh
American Nervoso was insane. Somehow, this is even better. One of the most satisfying hardcore (or hardcore-adjacent) albums I have ever had the pleasure of hearing. Heavy but dynamic, technical but not just for the sake of it; one of the most well-written albums ever, in any genre ever. And the bonus remix is cool too. It took me a long time to come around to this album, but I'm very glad I did.
Favorites: all of them
Somehow took me until now to come around to this absolute gem of an album. Some of the most creative writing I've ever heard in heavy music.
Favorites: Thank God For Worker Bees, John Woo, Rejection Spoken Softly, Dead For A Minute, Dali's Praying Mantis, Spitting Black
A weird little step in a strange direction that almost spelled the end for them. Nowhere near their best work, but not really their worst either. Their later work is great, but it would have been cool to see them continue along this trajectory and maybe ultimately perfect this sound.
Favorites: It's Only Over When..., Billy Gnosis, Million Days, Losing Generation
An interesting album to go back to and laugh at/with every now and then, but nothing all that salvageable. Still, Darling I Love You was the first song I ever heard by them (a friend played it on guitar at bandcamp in like freshman year high school and as a freshman of course it's hilarious) so this album does have a little bit of nostalgic value for me personally. But Jesus, Love Song, Scenesters, and Cigarette Song (the second to last song, I'm going by the spotify titles) are four of the ... read more
Uncomfortable but weirdly accessible. One of my favorite albums of all time, and my favorite thing Full of Hell has ever put their name on (and The Body too, but I've never really loved The Body by themselves)
Favorites: Earth Is A Cage, Master's Story, Didn't The Night End, Light Penetrates
It's not as memorable as their debut, but it doesn't need to be. I love this album because it's extremely raw and noisy (at least by CTE's standards) and it sounds like it was fun to make. Luckily this translates over to this listening experience as well, because although everything they're doing has been done before (and admittedly by better bands probably; i.e. The Jesus Lizard, Nirvana, The Beatles, The Pixies, etc.) it's so enjoyable that it's hard to really care too much about ... read more
It gets a little redundant towards the end (as do a lot of their records) but the youthful energy more than makes up for it and shows that at their best, Bad Religion could easily hold their own against any of the other punk bands of the era.
Favorites: Fuck Armageddon, Doing Time, We're Only Gonna Die, Latch Key Kids, Voice of God is Government
One of Full of Hell's more satisfying and complete listens. Even if Merzbow's contributions are rather minimal, the songwriting is memorable and more than enough to make up for it.
Favorites: Fawn Heads and Unjoy, High Fells, Thrum in the Deep, Burst Synapse, Blue Litmus, Ludjet Av Gud, Shattered Knife
Music = great
Lyrics = works in some places (Raised and Erased, Ease My Siamese), not so much in others (Gallery of Thrills, portions of most other tracks)
Favorites: Raised and Erased, Last Laughter, Ease My Siamese, Interspecies, Tombo's Wound, Of Fear
Really good compilation album featuring some of my favorite material Converge has ever done. The demos on the second half do weigh down the tracklist a tiny bit (they're good, I just prefer the WFCC album versions to most of them, save for Towing Jehovah and Letterbomb). Luckily, the two live tracks both sound amazing and make two of Converge's most powerful pre-JD tracks sound even more powerful, thus ending the album on a very positive note.
Favorites: Downpour, Flowers and Razorwire, ... read more
I've listened to this record countless times and it always makes me feel a certain way. I can never quite put a finger on exactly what it is. Interesting to say the least.
Favorites: After School Special, Desert Search for Techno Allah, Merry Go Bye Bye, Phlegmatics, Carry Stress In The Jaw, Ma Meeshka Mow Skwoz
A consistently moving work of art full of beautifully crafted sonic textures
Favorites: Guilty of Everything, Get Well, B&E, Bent Nail, Endlessly
I like how it flows as one continuous piece of music and pretty consistently remains a pretty abrasive exercise in noise and grinding aggression throughout its duration. While it's nowhere near my favorite record of theirs (isnt really as memorable as most of their other work to me) it's still a good one.
Favorites: Vessel Deserted, Bone Coral and Brine, Coven of the Larynx
My favorite Mr. Bungle album by a mile. S/T was weirder in tone and Disco Volante in execution but this one took what they learned on those two records and successfully made one of the strangest and quirkiest but most well put together albums ever made.
Favorites: all of them but particularly Ars Moriendi, None of Them Knew They Were Robots, Golem II: The Bionic Vapour Boy, Goodbye Sober Day, Air-Conditioned Nightmare
Among their finest works, it takes everything that made People Who Can Eat People so great (and Only God Can Judge Me) and progresses that sound even further. Not perfect but it's one of the more satisfying records in their arsenal.
Favorites: You Don't Deserve Yourself, White Face Black Eyes, Self Esteem, Heartilation, Truckers Are The Blood, Oldy Timey, Kazoo Sonata in C Maj
Like the three records before it, Christmas Island is great. But it's great in a different way. Despite having much more subtle and absurd lyrics than previously heard, this record somehow feels like the most personal and somber thing they've ever done, especially in songs such as Best Friend, Angel of Death, I Wanna Rock Out In My Dreams, Getting Naked and Playing With Guns, and of course Linda Ronstadt. It can be hard to kind of push through all the strange metaphors Sean uses on this one but ... read more
If not much else, this record is fun to listen to. A lot of fun to listen to actually. The riffs on this thing are some of the best Four Year Strong has ever written, along with some of their catchiest hooks and sharpest performances the band has ever given on a record to date. All of this is aided of course by the stellar production work of Kurt Ballou of God City Sound.
As usual, the lyrics are nothing special, just kind of cliche ideas expressed in cliche ways (Go Down In History never ... read more
Edit: I lied, MBIAHB is actually great. Still don't like American Garbage or the production/mixing tho
Every time I listen to this record, I want to like it way more than I actually do. Small Red Boy is among the best songs the band has ever written, as is Goodbye Oh Goodbye and also Terrifyer. But on the other end of things, this record has what I would consider my least favorite song the band has ever recorded, My Brain is a Human Body. I can almost hear what they're going for on it and I ... read more
