I can respect the aesthetic he was going for and I mean the vocals are pretty on point- it just sounds so lazy. The production is so weak and empty that this just reads as a half assed rip off as opposed to any sort of cool homage. Until I Found You is very pleasant but that’s been overplayed sm now that I hardly even enjoyed that. Incredibly mid

If Doja Cat actually made good music

MGMT - Mother Nature

Really interesting new direction for the duo. I love how they always change up their sound on every release, and they are continuing that theme moving forward it seems. I love how spacey and airy this track is, the guitars are kind of flat but in a weird way it conveys the song better. Def looking forward to Loss of Life next year

James and the Shame - Nothing Left to Love
82

For now I would say I prefer Human Overboard just because of its length, but overtime I could easily see myself preferring this over it. The themes here feel less purposefully biting and edgy than Human Overboard in a way I really enjoy, and of the three new tracks, Sure Thing and Small Man stick out as easily some of his best writing to date, especially the latter like damn. Heavy though has some really weird writing that I'm not so much a fan of. Overall had this been a full LP with another ... read more

The Beatles - Now And Then

Genuinely incredible track that had it have been recorded in their heyday would be one of the best Beatles songs without question imo. This thing is truly beautiful and hearing old Paul harmonize with young John is profoundly amazing. The duality of past and present is so potent with this track in a way that is deeply introspective. There could not be a better and more fitting conclusion for the best band in history, and being alive to experience that is genuinely a gift

James and the Shame - I Think I'm Supposed to Like This

Love Link’s backing vocals here, writing on point as always, this easily has one of his strongest melodies to date. Very excited for the EP Friday

Father John Misty - Pure Comedy

I certainly do get why people prefer fear fun or honeybear over this- the songs here are damn long and some of them highly repetitive musically. But if you really give this album the time and attention it deserves, I truly believe you’ll find some of the most introspective socially keen writing of this generation by far. In terms of what I’ll likely listen to more as individual tracks I’d say I like Honeybear a bit more, but as a cohesive album experience this is absolutely ... read more

Father John Misty - I Love You, Honeybear

Basically improves upon fear fun in every way, and I already thought that was an amazing album. The writing, production, vocals, just everything is so top notch. This thing reminds me sm of Matt Maltese, atm my favorite artist period, so I absolutely love this

Quadeca - SCRAPYARD II
75

Miles better than the first scrapyard, although the third song I’m def not a fan of whatsoever

Father John Misty - Chloë and the Next 20th Century
55

This thing just sounds so plastic and soulless. There’s some very clever songwriting and slick big band-style production, but idk it just feels very surface level and non-genuine, completely unlike his other stuff. All of these tracks- apart from the standout imo Only a Fool- sound like someone imitating his style as opposed to actually FJM, unfortunate this is the most recent project from him

Father John Misty - Fear Fun
86

This is so underrated wtf. From what I've heard of his other stuff, this album definitely doesn't go quite as deep into introspective territory as his other stuff, and the second half of the album is notably weaker than the first- but the highs here are genuinely phenomenal. Nancy From Now On is an absurdly catchy cautionary tale on alcoholism, while tracks like the opener, closer, and I'm Writing a Novel combine sardonic wit with really light, cheery production in a neat way. Certainly not ... read more

McKinley Dixon - Beloved! Paradise! Jazz!?

An explosive, punchy, insightful ride. The production on most of these tracks is fantastic and there are some phenomenal hooks, I just can’t help but wish it were longer. Some of these tracks are a tad annoying as well to me like Mezzanine Tippin and the intro but still quite enjoyable and one of the best hip-hop albums I’ve heard this year for sure

Black Pumas - Chronicles of a Diamond
70

Pretty standard, solid soul record with some fantastic vocals and average production. Nothing outstanding but certainly nothing bad either, enjoyable πŸ‘

Paramore - This Is Why
83

Finally got around to giving this a relisten and man this thing is just so fun. Apart from the title track the first half of the album is MUCH weaker than the second half but there are some serious post-punk bangers here, fun ass time

MIKE - Burning Desire

I feel similarly to this like I did with the new Earl Sweatshirt project- great beats/production with some writing highlights but some super lazy sounding rapping that kind of ruins it for me

Tomb Mold - The Enduring Spirit
80

This is the first time I’ve ever listened to a death metal album in full and I have to say I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. The incredibly grovelly vocals mixed with the much lighter, melodic guitar passages makes for an incredibly interesting combo, even if many of these tracks did blend together by the end of them and become slightly exhausting. Still, a highly engaging listen

Sofia Kourtesis - Madres
75

A really unique blend of Latin music and house/electronic, even if a lot of these tracks felt a bit bland after a while. Still there are some serious vibey tracks here

The Gaslight Anthem - History Books
45

This thing sounds like someone desperately trying to sound like Bruce Springsteen but failing miserably, every track sounds so washed out and soulless

WARGASM - Venom

I could imagine this album being played at a PaintBall arena

Jlin - Perspective

Very pleasant electronic music, not much more to say

On 2Pac - Me Against The World
"@Cloudboy019 yeah I def get what you mean. Pac’s cadence and energy is so infectious for me I was able to look past the production being relatively ‘one-note’, even though like you said it is excellent production. That’s an excellent analogy"
On 2Pac - Me Against The World
"@Cloudboy019 that's a fair critique, I will say flow is not Pac's strongsuit, though a lot of people would probably disagree with that. The production is pretty much perfect here imo but it is definitely uniform across the record so I could see it growing stale if G-Funk adjacent stuff isn't as much your bag"

"@usur_disc350 I’ll admit I’ve not revisited this much at all in the last couple years, but I’ll definitely stand by it having several great cuts beyond the title track"
On usur_disc350's review of McKinley Dixon - Magic, Alive!
"Honestly, really well put. I still have this rated pretty highly but I'd say I feel similarly, there's a sheen over this style of 'indie rap' that's starting to feel like the sheen that's covered a large bulk of indie rock the past decade (post-Mac if you will), it's a sheen of homogenization. Hadn't really put much thought to it until now but I think this absolutely hits the nail on the head, and is probably why despite there being so much 'good' hip-hop nowadays, the bulk of it feels like one big swirl of sameness. Excellent take"

"@Trazyn I hate saying ‘annoying’ bc that’s reductive, there are def moments where the lyricism along with the vocal style felt really contrived and grating to me though. Overall it’s certainly not an ‘annoying’ album, just nothing particularly new for Windmill. I would say I’m annoyed with the windmill scene in general nowadays"

"@ScaredDog6163 yeah for sure! I appreciate the compliment! Jeff Buckley is a perfect example of why 90s rock really shouldn’t be funneled into those two ‘categories’ I listed because he blends so many styles and sounds (a major reason why Grace is one of the most majestic albums of all time). I’m the same as you in that there’s very little I truly dislike that I listen to- it makes it a lot easier to be encouraged to check out more stuff! On Weezer - Weezer (Blue Album)
"The other main strain in my mind is Slacker Rock (the kind I tend to prefer a bit). This is your Pavements, Built to Spills, Weezers, etc. This style of rock tended to ‘look forward’ whereas grunge took influence from a lot of its contemporaries in many ways. In terms of what I’d do for a deep dive now- honestly, I’d determine which strain you like more and start with the big bands before digging deeper, maybe even trying out some of the influences/ similar bands. For instance, if you really fw Weezer I’d recommend other Geek/Wacky Rock bands like Cake or Grandaddy. Same goes for, say, AIC- you could check out other alternative metal bands for instance."
On Weezer - Weezer (Blue Album)
"@ScaredDog6163 for sure! I went on a pretty big 90s rock binge a couple years back and it’s definitely a vast canyon. This is a wildly simplified answer, but imo there are two *main* streams of 90s rock. The first is what most people think of , being Grunge. These are your Nirvanas and Pearl Jams and basically what the average person will probably think of when they think of ‘90s rock’- and it’s great! Grunge pulls a lot from heavier influences depending on the band, such as Punk and Noise Rock for Nirvana or even Metal with bands like Alice In Chains."
