Eyedress - Let’s Skip To The Wedding
87

The more I’ve listened to his stuff the more Eyedress’ production has completely won me over. Is there even an ounce of depth to be had here? Not at all! But, I think a lot of people get hung up on music always have some level complexity or artistic thought into it, which I’ll admit I’m tropically one of those people, but idk sometimes I like music that’s just very pleasant to my ears and nothing more, like Men I Trust, Still Woozy, Mild High Club, and Eyedress is ... read more

Eyedress - Manila Ice

Just pure vibes. I’m still not the biggest fan of his vocals and they can sometimes be wildly annoying but they grew on me by the end of this album and I do think their washed out, echoey sound contributes to his overall feel. Not to mention some of these riffs are just so damn good and catchy. The very definition of style over substance but it’s a very enjoyable style that’s for sure, perfect for a sunrise drive

what is your name? - beyond old names, everyone's songs.

A couple of these tracks genuinely blew me away like Violins, BONES, and I, You. The vocals are mixed like trash though and there are some notable weak points but the more acoustic production is pretty neat

what is your name? - the now now and never
84

Every track feels so sweeping and gorgeous, with the longer tracks keeping my attention with sudden switches that always caught me off guard. Not as good as their newest for sure but still a really great listen, easily some of the band’s best on some of these tracks

Viagra Boys - Cave World
93

This album is like if you took discord memes and mashed it with the energy of a ravenous chihuahua, which somehow makes for an amazing listening experience. Every track is full of absolutely insane energy that is just so wildly infectious, like on tracks like the closer and Ain’t No Thief. Not to mention the genuinely introspective writing on tracks like Troglodyte, which is easily the best track imo, are very neat. I don’t like the weird interlude things that mess up the flow of ... read more

Viagra Boys - Welfare Jazz
55

The first track is such a banger but the rest of the album doesn’t even relatively reach the same heights again. The weird spoken word skits are just offputting and even though there are some great ideas, they really fail to translate to some actually good songs most of the time. Not awful and the high points save it from being just a really weak, really weird punk thing, but disappointing nonetheless

70

Some definite bangers, some definite lulls, overall a raunchy, fun experience

Viagra Boys - Common Sense
67

Lick the Bag is one of the weirdest bangers I’ve ever heard

Sampha - Process
91

It’ll take a few relistens to know for sure but as of rn I think I slightly prefer this over the new LP, just barely. The slick, airy production, mixed with the introspective songwriting and Sampha’s gorgeous vocals make this such an enjoyable listen, the Sampha hype is real

Susanne Sundfør - blómi
60

There are flashes of brilliance here but idk to me this record feels like it has an identity crisis. Some of these tracks like the opener and the closer have a super ambient, almost eerie vibe, while cuts like Fare Thee Well feel like more typical singer songwriter stuff and they just don’t mesh very well imo. Still a decent listen and if she put out a more cohesive work I’m sure it would be dope

Corinne Bailey Rae - Black Rainbows
70

I can definitely appreciate an established R&B artist taking such a wild foray into a different, more experimental sound, even if several of these tracks didn’t really connect with me. Fun listen

jaimie branch - Fly or Die Fly or Die Fly or Die ((world war))
55

Produced very cleanly and generally pleasant, just doesn’t go very far beyond background music to me

what is your name? - My Name Is...
95

This album is like if you took Panchiko’s D>E>A>T>H>M>E>T>A>L and meshed it with the production style of 22, a million, which should be a disaster and yet sounds positively beautiful. Every one of these tracks have so many twists and turns that left me astounded, not to mention the excellent songwriting. Genuinely beautiful album and one of my favs of the year for sure, huge surprise

Jeff Rosenstock - HELLMODE
100

Explosive, fiery, and just plain fun. I def think it’s frontloaded and i had trouble being as engaged by the end but the writing and energy of the record absolutely rips

EDIT: 83-> 100

Easily up there with WORRY as Rosenstock’s finest work to date. Simultaneously nostalgic and fuzzy yet reflective and exposing in all the right ways

Ana Frango Elétrico - Me Chama de Gato Que Eu Sou Sua
84

I’ve never listened to Ana Frango before but this was so damn enjoyable nearly every track has such an infectiously danceable rhythm to it that I love. Some tracks blend together and there’s a few lulls but overall this is an excellently funky, well produced and sang album that really pleasantly surprised me

George Clanton - Ooh Rap I Ya
93

Vibes. The sound of this reminds me a lot of some of Washed Out’s later 2000s stuff which is neat. It’s definitely style over substance and even though it’s a great style, I can’t help but wish there was just a bit more substance here, as most of these tracks seriously blend together. Still an amazingly produced album that’s worth a listen

EDIT: 73->93

It's not quite as towering as Slide, but it's debatably even vibier- no small feat indeed

underscores - Wallsocket
50

I feel similarly about this like I did with the new Jane Remover album- some great production ideas but some missed, with vocals that are really off putting to me and pretty much hamper my enjoyment of the album on the whole

Squid - O Monolith
75

This album has such a goofy, fiery energy that is really infectious, especially on tracks like Undergrowth and Green Light. That said, there are some tracks that really fail to develop for me like Siphon Song, and overall I think the record could’ve used a bit more refining. Def still a fun time tho

Caroline Polachek - Desire, I Want to Turn Into You
45

I feel like I’m missing something here. I mean the vocals are perfectly fine and the production has small flashes of innovation but idk to me this was just incredibly bland and uninspired sounding, I may need to just listen again but this is my second time listening and I just wasn’t impressed whatsoever

Kara Jackson - Why Does the Earth Give Us People to Love?
80

Her voice is honestly unlike any voice I’ve ever heard, in a good way. Her writing is also pretty incredible especially on tracks like pawnshop. That being said, I do think this album is pretty heavily frontlioaded and loses a lot of its luster by the end, and some tracks are just way too long given how little really happens. Still a highly pleasant experience and it’s clear she has major writing and vocal talent

On 2Pac - Me Against The World
"@Cloudboy019 yeah I def get what you mean. Pac’s cadence and energy is so infectious for me I was able to look past the production being relatively ‘one-note’, even though like you said it is excellent production. That’s an excellent analogy"
On 2Pac - Me Against The World
"@Cloudboy019 that's a fair critique, I will say flow is not Pac's strongsuit, though a lot of people would probably disagree with that. The production is pretty much perfect here imo but it is definitely uniform across the record so I could see it growing stale if G-Funk adjacent stuff isn't as much your bag"

"@usur_disc350 I’ll admit I’ve not revisited this much at all in the last couple years, but I’ll definitely stand by it having several great cuts beyond the title track"
On usur_disc350's review of McKinley Dixon - Magic, Alive!
"Honestly, really well put. I still have this rated pretty highly but I'd say I feel similarly, there's a sheen over this style of 'indie rap' that's starting to feel like the sheen that's covered a large bulk of indie rock the past decade (post-Mac if you will), it's a sheen of homogenization. Hadn't really put much thought to it until now but I think this absolutely hits the nail on the head, and is probably why despite there being so much 'good' hip-hop nowadays, the bulk of it feels like one big swirl of sameness. Excellent take"

"@Trazyn I hate saying ‘annoying’ bc that’s reductive, there are def moments where the lyricism along with the vocal style felt really contrived and grating to me though. Overall it’s certainly not an ‘annoying’ album, just nothing particularly new for Windmill. I would say I’m annoyed with the windmill scene in general nowadays"

"@ScaredDog6163 yeah for sure! I appreciate the compliment! Jeff Buckley is a perfect example of why 90s rock really shouldn’t be funneled into those two ‘categories’ I listed because he blends so many styles and sounds (a major reason why Grace is one of the most majestic albums of all time). I’m the same as you in that there’s very little I truly dislike that I listen to- it makes it a lot easier to be encouraged to check out more stuff! On Weezer - Weezer (Blue Album)
"The other main strain in my mind is Slacker Rock (the kind I tend to prefer a bit). This is your Pavements, Built to Spills, Weezers, etc. This style of rock tended to ‘look forward’ whereas grunge took influence from a lot of its contemporaries in many ways. In terms of what I’d do for a deep dive now- honestly, I’d determine which strain you like more and start with the big bands before digging deeper, maybe even trying out some of the influences/ similar bands. For instance, if you really fw Weezer I’d recommend other Geek/Wacky Rock bands like Cake or Grandaddy. Same goes for, say, AIC- you could check out other alternative metal bands for instance."
On Weezer - Weezer (Blue Album)
"@ScaredDog6163 for sure! I went on a pretty big 90s rock binge a couple years back and it’s definitely a vast canyon. This is a wildly simplified answer, but imo there are two *main* streams of 90s rock. The first is what most people think of , being Grunge. These are your Nirvanas and Pearl Jams and basically what the average person will probably think of when they think of ‘90s rock’- and it’s great! Grunge pulls a lot from heavier influences depending on the band, such as Punk and Noise Rock for Nirvana or even Metal with bands like Alice In Chains."

Someday I’ll eventually go the whole distance but I think I’d honestly just get burned out going through a series of just messy subpar records tbh"
