Very jazzy album which I like, although it doesn’t quite as much for me as something like Magic, Alive! does. Still, redveil clearly has sauce and has some potential to be a banger artist in the future I’m sure. Good album, just not one I think I’m gonna be returning to much, especially as I find more jazz rap albums I like.
If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late is the first Drake album where I can see the formula starting to take place. With that said however, I still think this album is really solid. Basically every song here is vibey in some way which is pretty hard to accomplish. I hesitate to say I love this album, but it is one of the very few Drake albums (might even be the only one) that I have no actual issues with.
Nothing Was The Same is a little bit frustrating because on the one hand, I feel like it is proof that Drake is actually capable of sequencing an album and just chooses not to, and on the other hand I just wish it was less boring. I get that he was going for that late night drive feel, but you can do that while not having every song blend together into basically the same thing after a time. I don't know I mean this album is good but I really wish it was great.
Take Care is so good for the first two thirds of the album before devolving into track after track that feel like they should have just been saved for the deluxe edition. Seriously, if this album ended with Lord Knows it would easily be one of the best hip hop albums of the early 2010s, but it just keeps on going. I really love this album, but I can't in good conscience give it any more than an 8 because the whole thing falls off after a certain point (Doing It Wrong and Practice are both ... read more
Monster made me into a Future fan. I’ve liked this guys work previously, but the insane production and lyricism on this record is genuinely on another level and has me now fully addicted to Future’s sound. Unfortunately, it does fall of a bit in the second half, I mean we’re talking going from 9s and 10s to 7s and 8s, but still. This is probably the best mixtape I’ve ever listened to and I absolutely loved every moment of it.
WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? is a genuinely fantastic horrorcore pop album. This record will probably be remembered as a foundation for horrorcore in the future, and Billie Eilish’s career is definitely deserved as one of the most prominent figures in pop right now. Amazing record, highly recommend.
Issa Album is, in fact, an album. Basically every song is the exact same, almost nothing interesting to talk about with this record. I like Bank Account but that’s about it.
12 Notes is horrible. It’s honestly impressive how Alec Benjamin managed to take everything that was mildly charming from his first two releases and twist them into being unbearably cringey by this album. The white knight virtue signaling is ridiculous, and when the album has songs titled Pick Me, I Sent My Therapist to Therapy, and bars like “bought a king sized bed, but I lost my queen”, it’s no wonder that this is Alec’s worst album to date. I’m not ... read more
(Un)Commentary starts out very similar to Alec Benjamin’s previous work, which is to say not good but not exactly bad, before plummeting into atrocious song after atrocious song. The White Knight-ness of some of these songs is so cringey, and they are not anywhere near as well written as Alec thinks they are. Easily his worst record so far.
Savage Mode is carried by Metro’s always great production, even if it does feel less grand than what would be his later work. 21 Savage feels very bored throughout this entire project. I suppose that is supposed to be his brand, but that doesn’t make me feel more enthusiastic about the songs. If he doesn’t care about the music why should I?
These Two Windows is a slight step in the right direction for Alec Benjamin, unfortunately I also think this is probably about the cap of his capabilities without some drastic change. Outside of Match in the Rain, the album is basically just some fine tracks before falling off in the end. Nothing special whatsoever, but it’s fine for what it is. Side note, The Book of You and I is a song that is very personal to me, and as such I don’t feel like I can properly rate it, hence why it ... read more
Narrated For You is the epitome of TikTok music. It’s inoffensive, and has just a slight twinge of flavor. There’s storytelling is corny and the production is as generic as one could possibly imagine. Nothing special whatsoever, not exactly bad but far from good.
Blue Slide Park simply does not hit in the same way that KIDS does. The fun, rambunctious energy of that mixtape is just not here and what it’s been replaced with is just a little too close to old NF for comfort. It’s not bad, there are high points and there’s also low points, but overall it just barely misses the mark and is probably Mac’s most unremarkable release to date.
The Maybe Man is easily AJR’s best album in my opinion. The writing is still corny, but the “adulting” aspect is downplayed enough for me to be able to enjoy the songs and even relate to some of them here and there. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still not good, but to a lesser extent than before (theres only two 0/10s this time!). I wouldn't say I recommend this album or anything, but it's not nearly as painful as the previous albums. Who knows? maybe one day ... read more
OK ORCHESTRA is yet another frustrating record from AJR. This time the concept seems to be non-existent or poorly executed at the least. The writing and production are the same as always, I’m basically being a broken record with these AJR reviews but they’re basically all just putting more and more lipstick on a pig and there’s only so much I can say about one that doesn’t apply to all of them.
Neotheater is yet another improvement for AJR, now they’ve made a 2/10 album! Seriously though, there are ideas here that work. There is genuine fear in growing up and the themes of this album could work if they weren’t coated in so much “I don’t feel like adulting today” energy. Production? Corny. Writing? Corny. Wash, rinse, repeat.
The Click is a massive step in the right direction for AJR, and by massive step in the right direction I mean we’ve evolved from a 1/10 to a 1/10. This album is carried so hard by one song and the rest of the album is garbage. I can respect the idea presented by the concept, but the execution is so corny I can’t take it seriously even if I wanted to. Production is an improvement I guess, but only marginally. It feels like they’re refining their craft, but that craft is making ... read more
Living Room is abhorrent. Not only is it an AJR album, but it’s a primitive AJR album. The sampling is some of the worst I’ve ever seen, the millennial writing style is so cringey, and the entire thing is just an assault on the ears that just barely misses the 0/10 mark for me. We can only go up from here…. I think.
KIDS is a really fun mixtape, although it does become a somewhat haunting experience when you consider how the lifestyle being celebrated on this record is what eventually would be the death of Mac Miller. Still, if you disconnect from that it’s easy to get lost in the fun of this record. It’s not often there’s a hip hop release wheee the whole point is just to have some good times, and KIDS does a fantastic job at this. It’s primitive in places, but there are many ... read more
