Pitchfork giving a lukewarm review makes sense since I normally tend to have a polar opposite opinion to them on music ratings. Normally, I also have a polar opposite to The Needle Drop but in this occasion we actually agree. It is just that good of an album!
The EP really showcases the talent of all the various musicians that are involved in this band. You get all the fun riffage and stuff from the former ETID boys, but you also get diversity that Greg puts in the vocals. The opening track Sacrificial Participant is a great example of that. I am sure this will be a great live experience as well.
This album is an emotional rollercoaster. Cassiar is one of the most emotional songs that I have ever heard. I have been brought to tears every single time I have listened to that song. Similar to Dayseeker's last album, this record deals with losing a loved one and all the various thoughts that go through with it. At this point, we all have lost someone we were close to in the past few years and this really hits home.
Sigur Rós - ()
Sigur Rós, and specifically Jónsi, are a masterclass in painting an emotional landscape. They created their own language and Jonsi has mentioned multiple times that it is essentially gibberish. Even if it is just gibberish, the emotions portrayed in the arrangements express things in a way that simple lyrics could not express. With the understanding of how Sigur Ros composes, () might be the prime example of their skills.

It hits all the nice pop punk sounds. Definitely nothing original, but sometimes you don't need to be to still produce solid music. I can see this getting some more spins in the summer or some of the tracks on here being thrown on my summer pop-punk playlist.
I can see where they were thinking about how the music industry was going and they wanted to stay ahead of the curb, but outside of the emotional aspect, it is a mediocre. I can still enjoy it as it is LP, but I will just go back to picking between the other albums they have. It is strange how they kind of tried going heavier in The Hunting Party and then swinging completely the opposite after.
They have potential. My biggest critique is that I cannot seem to figure out what sound they are going for. They have a lot of influences that can be picked out, but they haven't found what works and what doesn't to be cohesive enough to truly stand out amongst a very saturated genre.
Really enjoyed this revisited album, but it still is a revisited album. In the end, all I want to do is go back and listen to the original. Unless if an artist had really bad production on the original but the songs were flat-out amazing, there isn't much space to revisit old albums later on. With that being said, Thrice is a band that can get away with it.
When initially thinking about this album, I didn't think it would get a perfect score when I did an official rating. However, the more I thought through it after listening the more it made sense. I kept trying to find a category to put as a 9 instead of 10, but honestly, they all can be a 10. When I think of TOOL, I think of this album. Almost every song could make my Bangers playlist. The production is top-notch. The vocals are superior and obviously, the instrumentation is great. It is ... read more
A lot of times transition albums can be rough for bands. They have to balance the sound that legacy fans like, but also have to hone and refine a new sound. Thrice is one of those bands who did this perfectly. You still have songs that appease to the Melodic-Hardcore/Post-Hardcore fans with songs like Earth Will Shake and Music Box, but then you have songs like Atlantic and Red Sky that give a glimpse of what is to come from the band.
Ugg this is so rough. I will admit I really really do not like MGK in general. However, I tried to put aside my disdain for him and give this a fair listen. Even with a fair listen, this is just a bad record. For something that is produced by Travis Barker, the production is just really bad. There were moments where there was weird compression for no reason what so ever. The lyrics were cringy. Maybe the only funny part of the record was the track mainstream sellout when he has enough humor to ... read more
I found this to be very boring and did not really catch my attention much.
Skylight is a phenomenal song and was the main reason that album got put on my list. However, the rest of the album just fell flat and blurred together. Probably will not come back to this outside of the opening track. There is talent here, but the song writing is hit or miss.
I can see why the 3 songs off of this one are their most played on Spotify, but then the other tracks kind of bring it back down to reality. It is a solid record, but the follow up to this one is still my favorite so far.
This originally did not click with me. I think it could have been the format and time that I listened didn't allow me to really dig this too much, but this second listen through was really good. If I would have gotten to this during my 2022 year end review, it would have gotten a place on my list. Solid record.
This is really enjoyable for being some labeled as Avant-garde/ Experimental Rock. I would understand why people would not like this, but if you get you get it.
