Iggy Pop - EVERY LOSER
52

Boring for the most part. Strung Out Johnny was the best track and gave the album more points than it would have without the track.

Steely Dan - The Royal Scam
85

It isn't as repeatable as their first LP, but I still thoroughly enjoyed this record. The production was phenomenal. The instrumentation was stellar, and there were some cool composition standpoints there. The Fez was my favorite track because their is this chord progression that repeats a few times that just made me smile. The reason why it isn't as repeatable as their first LP is mostly because the tracks don't stand out as much as that record. However, I do think the album is more complete ... read more

Anti-Flag - LIES THEY TELL OUR CHILDREN
52

Oof, this was just a really bland album to listen to. I really wanted this to be good. Especially with all the interesting features. However, this just really fell flat. The production wasn't really that good and actually made me upset all the time. Also, this just sounded very very generic and unoriginal. Also Victory or Death has a part that sounded almost exactly like Some Nights by Fun.

Allegaeon - DAMNUM
82

Unfortunately this record originally came out the same day as one of my top 5 AOTY and got lost in the shuffle. I am glad I chose to come back to it and rerate it before the year-end. I thoroughly enjoyed this record. The only thing is that it did feel a little long so it lost a little on Cohesion and Composition, but otherwise a solid record. I plan on coming back to this again.

Brutus - Unison Life
80

A record that I think can easily gain more points with more and more listens.

Haunted Shores - Void
80

The title track is very good. I also really enjoy the production and always forget how great Get Good Drum plug-ins are. I think this scratched an itch leading up to a new Periphery album and gets me a little excited about what Misha and company do next.

The Bad Plus - The Bad Plus
80

Even with the changes from the core group, they still manage to have some pretty good sounds. It is solid but not quite up to the level of Suspicious Activity?

Muse - Will of the People
77

I thought this appealed to Muse's older sound a lot more without completely abandoning their more electronic components. There were 3 or 4 songs that really stood out. Would I saw this is anything close to as good as their older records, no, but it is a decent recovery from a band that I gave up on almost 10 years ago.

Meshuggah - Immutable
62

Meshuggah still knows how to jam, but they ran out of ideas. It just felt like it was the same song dragging on and on.

Until I Wake - Inside My Head
78

Just some solid Metalcore. They also have some really great tracks and then some really blah tracks. I really enjoy the vocalists tone and the unclean vocalist balances well. If you enjoy that early to mid-2010s Metalcore sound, then this band is perfect for you. If you are looking for something a little more original and pushing genre boundaries, then this is not for you. This is a pretty solid debut record.

Robert Glasper - Black Radio III
70

I loved Black Radio I and II, this one seemed to just fall flat compared to the others in the Trilogy.

Short Stack - Maybe There’s No Heaven
84

I seem to like this way more than most!

Counterparts - A Eulogy for Those Still Here
78

Counterparts can still put out a banger of an album.

Repeatability/Recallability: I have listened and digested this one a few times and think that it has some repeatability to it. 8/10

Song Strength: Outside of Whispers of Your Death, the songs didn't really stick out to me as something amazing. 7/10

Production: Production was Decent. Nothing special. 8/10

Vocals: Brandon's Vocals are good but nothing special. 7/10

Instrumentation: Good instrumentation, tight playing. 8/10

Emotion: I ... read more

Riverside - Love, Fear and the Time Machine
85

This was a suggestion based on a group. I have never really listened to Riverside before. I believe they might have come across a playlist or Radio station at some point, but I have never sat down and fully listened to a record of theirs.

Anyway, I will say that Riverside is right up my wheelhouse of what I like to listen to. They are in the Progressive genre, but they are way more approachable than most progressive bands out there. I actually find some overlaps with the vocals here and some ... read more

Spite - Dedication To Flesh
80

I didn't know about Spite until I saw them at Incarceration for only about a half a set. I do really appreciate their sound and how they are more on the beatdown version of Deathcore. It is a lot more groovier than some other deathcore. It also is more about the aggression.

Repeatability: I think for a Deathcore record this has a decent repeatability, because I want to come back to this when I am feeling an aggressive Deathcore record. 9/10
Song Strength: Decent quality songs, the only thing ... read more

The Devil Wears Prada - Color Decay
81

The singles were phenomenal for this record. Watchtower and Sacrifice were two of my most played songs. For some reason, this record really didn't sit right with me when it came out. However, I have given it a few more listens since. I think that this album is a grower in the sense that it has gotten better over time and the initial hype has leveled out. Sometimes people hype something too much and don't allow for a solid listen of a record. This is probably TDWP's best work and balances all of ... read more

Bloodywood - Rakshak
83

It had been a minute since I listened to this album. I remember being blown away by how great this record is and how original the sound was. I definitely still feel that way and actually enjoyed it more after waiting a few months to listen again. It will move a few spots up on the AOTY list. The balance of Indian folk and nu-metal tones added with some djenty guitars made for some musical moments.

Glasslands - The Deep
77

I generally enjoy this record. It doesn't hold as high of a remark from when it first came out in April, but it is still a pretty solid record with some great tracks on it. It is clean and polished, almost too polished at times. Some of the inflected vocals can be rough at times, but otherwise, it is pretty solid all around.

Oceans Ate Alaska - Disparity
77

This is one that kind floats between a 75-80. The shining tracks really gave the boost up to an 80 because those are what makes me come back to the record. It can be pretty generic Progressive Metalcore, but they do it really really well. Plague Speech is clearly one of the best breakdowns of the year and one of the best assbeater tracks. It was a decent comeback album.

Aviana - Corporation
80

This is a really solid record. Other records that I have similar ranked don't actually hold up to the enjoyableness of this record. Aviana is setting a trailblaze, but they are definitely hitting this particular Djent adjacent Metalcore well. It is also a really well produced record. Everything has its place in the mix and is crystal clear. Definitely an album I will come back to over and over again when I need something from this genre.
