POST HUMAN: Survival Horror was Bring me the Horizon's grand return to metal music, and they couldn't have pulled it off any better.
Conveniently coming out during the beginning of pandemic, yet having absolutely nothing to do with it in the beginning of production, PHSH tackles and apocalyptic world ending event and the effects it has on people, with a driving narrative that's actually very prominent, clear, and well thought out, as well as a diverse range of sounds that just sound so fucking ... read more
POST HUMAN: NEX GEN is finally out after four long ass fucking years and I actually couldn't be more happy. Since its announce this has been my most anticipated album, and the singles constantly being fire have just heightened it, to the point when I was sat there at midnight staring at my spotify in the dark, I was scared it wouldn't meet my expectations. But it fucking did and with flying colours.
I don't know how to describe this album. It's an emo, hyperpop, metalcore EP (even tho it has ... read more
It's a weird album.
I feel lyrically it's absolutely disgusting and kinda goofy, much in line w the rest of the album. The mixing is absolutely shit, and I hate the vocals. But, underneath it all, the album goes kinda hard, good riffs, good basslines, good drumming, it is hard asf.
I feel it's a very cheesy listen, one I can't really take seriously with awful vocals, awful lyrics and awful mixing, but really good instrumentals and songwriting underneath it all
Okay this album is both the best and worst of the year at the same time. I think with an album like this that has so many song I can't stand and so many I love it's easier to run through the notable tracks one by one, but the first thing to say here is that the production here is great and I hate it. This album is one that's shrunk on me massively overtime, and when it first came out I couldn't understand the complaint about the production being too clean, but now the tracks just feel kinda ... read more
i came into the album confused on its purpose and i left knowing more but even more confused. for the first 25 minutes i was lost, it sounded alright, the instrumental was repetitive, the songs arw 10+ minutes long, its good riffs and good drumming drowned in atmosphere and distorted reverb, with pained growls much lower in the mix and similarly distorted. and i liked it, but it just sounded alright, and emotionally i felt fine.
this was until around 25 minutes in as mentioned, where the ... read more
The Cleansing is considered one of the defining deathcore albums of the MySpace era despite actually being relatively late to the party, with big bands like Bring Me the Horizon having already moved on from deathcore by the time this album came out. And the fact that this was considered so pivotal in deathcore despite coming out in 2008 really interested me and I wanted to see why.
Well it's pretty damn clear now. The Cleansing is one of the rawest, angriest sounding deathcore albums I've ever ... read more
i didn't expect to like this album as much as i did. it's lofi-esque instrumentals with agonised screams very quietly underneath, and i love it. the screams are horrific and very pained, and when it's showcased (such as when the instrumental fades out in 'illinois//alberta') they do sound amazing, and the instrumentals are nice; it creates this nice contrast which makes this one of the weirder albums i've heard from the screamo scene, but one i genuinely enjoyed more than expected. like nice ... read more
see i actually don't think this album is bad, and it's definitely not as bad as i expected. lil darkie is an artist who i love a lot of his singles, songs like holocaust and genocide i consider to be the peaks of the trap metal genre, bet i've never gone to listen to a whole album.
fortunately this album opens STRONG with rap music, a song which is so fast with its country sound and his vocals which just genuinely sound like he's enjoying singing more than any artist i ever heard, and the track ... read more
7xvn's BlackJack opens with a very cringey song that was just awkward to listen to, with boring vocals and standard instrumentation, perhaps setting up this album in a bad light, but then it's instantly followed up with bad boy, a heavy asf deathcore song, which was a surprise for me, expecting a more one-note album. but turns out later that was what it was anyway. BlackJack consists of a cringey opener, a single deathcore song, and numerous 1-2 minute songs of 7xvn's signature distorted ... read more
Man this is an album I used to actually be a fan of, but I came in listening to this album, and everything seems bland and uninspired, and even a lot softer and more generic than some of their older stuff. It makes me sad that this is the most streamed rock album on Spotify. Not to strip it of all merit, Arabella, Knee Socks and Snap out of It are kinda bops, but otherwise it's uninspired, generic, impactless radio rock
Edit: coming back to this after listening to their previous albums, ... read more
mitski's album here is weird, the instrumentation is very odd sounding, i think the songs are mostly too short, however, 'A Pearl', 'Washing Machine Heart' and 'Remember My Name' boost this from a 50 to a 60 (omds a pearl is actually incredible)
EDIT (60-71): So actually this album has grown on me a fair amount. The instrumentals are consistently catchy, sometimes epic, and mitski's vocals add to it. I am in love with the sound of the majority of the ... read more
i was honestly surprised by this album, Laufey's goal of 'bringing jazz to the mainstream' is kind of working as she makes some of the most accessible jazz i've seen, whilst also remaining consistently good. each song has engaging instrumentation and beautiful lyrics, none overstay their welcome and we have a variety of fast and slow songs that flow together great. even the song 'misty' which started off boring ended up really impressing me with the vocals. the lyrics are fairly standard, ... read more
this album has some of my favourite rnb grooves, excellent lyricism and instrumentation, it feels like her lowest points in life handled tastefully and just excellently. the album however, feels a fair bit too long, and some songs on the latter half of the album (specifically the 7 minute orange moon) do drag on. it has some excellent groove but it does overstay its welcome, and the quality of the first half of the record isn't maintained all the way through
