Liturgy - H.A.Q.Q.
94

Haven't had a headache this good in a while (or at least since that new Lightning Bolt album). The first listen kinda threw me for a loop, but coming back to it, this shit's tight. HHH's glitch stuff goes over really well for the most part and I love the additional instrumentation she throws in there too (the bells/glockenspiel? on "Pasaqalia" are NICE). Definitely one of the most creative and memorable metal albums to come out this year. I do think it could've benefitted from a ... read more

FKA twigs - MAGDALENE
83

Five years after her groundbreaking debut, FKA Twigs returns with a mind bending sophomore album that is, in most ways, just as good as her first. On 'MAGDALENE' Twigs discards a lot of the trip-hop stylings of her first record and goes full glitch pop, resulting in one of 2019's most essential art pop albums. Also that vocal melody on cellophane hnnngh wow

Fav Tunes:
1.) cellophane
2.) fallen alien
3.) mirrored heart

Swans - Filth
73

One of the most aptly titled albums of all time. This one's not fit for human consumption.

Queens of the Stone Age - Villains
74

Groovy groovy fun fun. Thank you Mr. Josh Homme. I get why a lot of people were turned off by Mark Ronson's overly-clean production on this one, but for me, the tunes still shine through strong as ever on 'Villains'. Easily one of the most fun rock albums of 2017 fo me.

Fav Tunes:
1.) Fortress
2.) Domesticated Animals
3.) The Way You Used to Do

Beck - Hyperspace
40

Hey, I mean, I came to Muse's defense when they did the whole retro-80s synth-pop thing last year, but this just isn't very good. At least Muse knew how to have fun with this sound, this is just dreadfully boring.

This kinda blows chunks, yeah?

Ghost - Meliora
76

Ghost's third and finest album, 'Meliora' is a delightfully blasphemous, campy church service housed in a gothic cathedral in hell. On this record, Tobias and his nameless ghouls refine their pop-influenced heavy metal sound with an extremely occult presentation, melodic guitar solos, and devilishly catchy choruses. The result is an album that is larger than life in sound, thematically sinister, and silly in the best way possible. My only real complaint is that I'm still not crazy about Tobias' ... read more

Big Thief - Two Hands
90

I wasn't too keen on 'U.F.O.F.' but this one's a stunner. Beautiful singing, subtle melodies, with a consistent, contemplative tone and just enough variety to keep me coming back for more. Perfect album to warm the soul on a chilly autumn walk. Good stuff all around.

Fav Tunes: Rock and Sing, Two Hands, Not, Wolf

Radiohead - Hail to the Thief
73

We live in a society.

Metallica - Death Magnetic

ooh ouch my ears ooh owie ooh oh ouch youch woah ow ow owie

Fav Tunes:
1.) That Was Just Your Life
2.) The Day That Never Comes
3.) idk...

Metallica - St. Anger
10

Yes, it's just as abhorrent as everyone says. Metallica's 2003 LP, 'St. Anger' is a truly dumfounding disasterpiece if ever there was one. I don't think it's much of a stretch to say that 'St. Anger' is one of the worst sounding albums ever made by an act as high-profile as Metallica. In an effort to achieve a more "raw" sound, Metallica and producer Bob Rock drum up 75 minutes of unrelenting, frustrating racket.

On song after song, Hetfield moans and howls, the riffs churn and buzz ... read more

Metallica - Master of Puppets
100

One of the first albums and bands that I fell in love with when I started getting into music several years ago. Out of all of the albums that I gravitated towards during that period of my life, only a select few of them have stuck with me as the years have drawn on, this album being one of them. My appreciation for Metallica's 1986 masterpiece 'Master of Puppets' has not waned one bit. In fact I'd say since expanding my taste for metal and really digging into newer stuff, I've grown to love MoP ... read more

Jay Rock - WIN
20

Maybe the best song out of all the songs so far idk tho.

TOOL - 10,000 Days
83

Alrighty, then
Picture this if you will...

10 to 2 AM, X, Yogi DMT, and a box of Krispy Kremes in my "need to know" pose, just outside of Area 51 contemplating the whole "chosen people" thingy, when just then, a flaming stealth banana split the sky, like one would hope but never really expect to see in a place like this, cutting right angle donuts on a dime and stopping right at my Birkenstocks and me yelping, "Holy fucking shit!" Holy fucking shit! Holy fucking ... read more

La Villa Strangiato is tremendous.

Mac DeMarco - All of Our Yesterdays
77

Idk man I'm not even much of a Mac fan but something about this song just really hits me. That subtle break in his voice when he goes "such a shame" is just... chills. Very simple and heartfelt. Seriously beautiful stuff.

Death Grips - Bottomless Pit
78

Sounds like those weird adult swim bumpers with the deep-sea divers in space and six-eyed technicolor squirrels you see at like 3:00 am. Wild.

Lightning Bolt - Fantasy Empire
80

Oh my goddddddd "Dream Genie" is so good. Like every time I listen to that song I'm just blown away.

Kate Bush - Hounds of Love
92

When Kate Bush said, "yeah-ee yeah-ee yo", I felt that.

Freddie Gibbs & Madlib - Bandana
73

Don't get me wrong, it's good. It's really good! But I don't think it comes close to 'Piñata'. Freddie Gibbs and Madlib's chemistry is borderline unmatched in the landscape of modern hip-hop. If the two of them are teaming up for an entire album, it's bound to be quality, no matter what. And while I do really enjoy 'Bandana', and it's more or less another helping of what we got on 'Piñata', I can't help but feel like it's somewhat lacking in what made that record one of the best ... read more

"Great review, I think you summed up the appeal of this one very well. I've really been loving this record, but have been having such a hard time articulating why! It definitely has a trance-like effect on me, and I can definitely hear the shades of Low and even Tim Buckley in there, now that you mention it."

"I can sympathize with feeling that this particular album was too "stagey", hearing her vocal style within a pseudo-antique Christian gospel album didn't really work for me either. The thing is, I do LOVE all the loud extreme stuff she was doing on Caligula, I think that style suited her quite well. I can see from your ratings that you don't necessarily agree lol"
