Very cool sound to it, don't get me wrong. It didn't floor me like it feels like it should have, but its got some really neat stuff going on that I think at least justifies at least a listen

Mitski - Be the Cowboy
82

While slightly more pop-heavy than previous albums, I still think Mitski delivers such a fun album I could listen to over and over again. Such a well-packed and polished product with very few unmemorable songs.

Lana Del Rey - Born to Die
67

Lana has a really nice voice, and there was definitely some nice songwriting and even instrumentation on some tracks, but so much of the album felt a lot less "grand" than it was maybe trying to be. orchestral sounds were paired with very slow and sort of sultry vocals that made some of the vocal payoffs underwhelming

Noname - Sundial
74

not an awful album by any means, but kind of lackluster compared to Room 25. Everything that's happened surrounding Noname doesn't immediately invalidate the music, but it certainly makes the messaging feel kind of hollow

Mitski - Bury Me at Makeout Creek
100

Absolutely perfectly paced. each track serves a purpose, and none dip in quality. I absolutely love the grungy sound Mitski went with, which is pretty unique in her discography and captures the angsty heartbreak vibe better than any of her projects before and since

Edit: 100

I don't know if this album is "objectively" perfect or anything arbitrary like that. After a lot of thinking, though, I've decided that to me, this album is absolutely perfect. It has soundtracked some of the ... read more

Just a truly bangin' rock and dance album with some great new wave elements. Unfortunately, the last album of theirs I actually really like

Doja Cat - Amala
56

Nothing is especially "bad" about it, but it's just such painfully boring pop rap/R&B. While other boring albums I've listened to sound nice enough, I just found something indescribably draining about listening to 'Amala' that completely tuned my brain off to it

Mach-Hommy - Pray For Haiti
77

Pretty solid rap album all-in-all. Really great production, with mostly pretty good vocals. I wasn't a fan of all the features, but it didn't completely ruin the experience or anything. I liked the connecting theme of Haiti and its struggles

Big Thief - Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You
96

beautiful piece of folk, never growing stale over it's lengthy runtime. Emotional and sonically resonant to a crazy degree I mean this is some, like, Experimental Country? Big Thief fucked up in the crib making Country Shoegaze

Eminem - The Marshall Mathers LP
74

A big step up from the Slim Shady LP in terms of lyrical quality. Some very very solid storytelling on a couple songs, and further reinforcing who Eminem wants to be seen as. My problem with the album is that despite being called "The Marshall Mathers LP", Em is still very firmly present as his edgelord Slim Shady persona. I'm not one to be easily "offended" per se but so many aspects of Em's lyrics and attitude age VERY poorly, which you can't necessarily blame squarely on ... read more

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - I'm in Your Mind Fuzz
82

probably my favourite King Gizz project so far. Some interesting sounds throughout that elicits a neat retro feel, as with many other KG albums

FKA twigs - MAGDALENE
94

Really interesting fusion of genres and ideas that never got stale, and make me feel like a devious Disney villain.

Another few listens gave me an even deeper appreciation for how haunting and tragic "MAGDALENE" is, so much beyond simply sounding amazing (which it does)

Little Simz - A Curious Tale of Trials + Persons
76

As with many debut albums, the artist has yet to fully hone in on their sound. Despite this, Simz still delivers a pretty solid album. The lyrics reflect issues both interpersonally for Simz, and more broadly. I think the album benefits from the shorter runtime, as to not overstay its welcome

Justice - †
86

Edit: 75-->86

It feels unfair to rate an electronic dance album that I listened to on a plane ride, but I'll try. I really enjoyed a lot of the songs. Nice synthy loops, abrasive booms, and a couple clever samples. The problem I found was that the songs often ran their course pretty early on, but that could just be attributed to missing what the album was made for: dancing

Edit: Have been on a bit of an "Alternative Dance" kick recently so I thought I'd come back to ... read more

Mac Miller - Watching Movies with the Sound Off
78

as the first Miller album I've listened to, I think I was pleasantly surprised. Some really fun instrumentals and pretty decent rapping for the most part. Some lyrics may still show some signs of immaturity, but a good experience nonetheless

Laufey - Bewitched
81

some really nice poppy jazz tunes with really great vocals

Teezo Touchdown - How Do You Sleep At Night?
55

A sort of confusing experience for me to listen to. Teezo's vocals are decent, but something about the way they're mixed with the backing tracks just create this off-putting sound. The pop just doesn't really work, and the lyrics don't help much either. There's a certain camp aspect I can respect, but that only works as an excuse to an extent

Brian Eno - Another Green World
83

I thought MGMT made this guy up for a song at first. He does know how to make a funky lil tune

Olivia Rodrigo - GUTS
76

Another solid and youthfully endearing album from Olivia. GUTS maybe doesn't have as many standout singles, instead being traded for a slightly more consistent track-list. She keeps doing what she does best on GUTS: very real teen troubles and some catchy pop-punk

Olivia Rodrigo - SOUR
75

honestly a very enjoyable and kinda charming album. Anyone can claim that she's an "industry plant" or whatever, but it's hard to deny that there's a palpably real and sort of raw teenager experience that Olivia manages to capture in her music that's hard not to appreciate
