Run The Jewels - Run The Jewels
79

Was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed Run the Jewels. Pure banger from song to song with awesome production and some fitting duo-rapping

JPEGMAFIA & Danny Brown - SCARING THE HOES: DLC PACK
83

I enjoyed the songs a lot for what they were: more Danny and Peggy songs. It's personally really hard for me to say if they're on the same tier as the main album songs, just because that album feels so perfect to me the way that it is

Thundercat - Drunk
86

I don't REALLY care if the songs are "underdeveloped" or whatever in this instance because honestly it's way too much fun for me to care

Tyler, The Creator - CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST: The Estate Sale
85

some pretty good new songs that really just add a little bit more to the album and make it that much slightly better

Tyler, The Creator - IGOR
97

Such a palpable heartbreak story that just sounds. so. good

I think a big part of why I connect so heavily with this album is due in part to the time it came into my life. When I listened, I felt a LOT of connection to the themes and lyrics of Igor, which definitely made it stick in my mind. I think the story telling is pretty genius without that factor, but the album also doesn't need the story for me to think it's pretty incredible

Tyler, The Creator - CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST
84

Very very solid rap from Tyler here. In a lot of ways, it feels like a bit of a culmination of all his previous albums. The clever and comedic rhymes present in his older stuff mixed with the soul inspiration Tyler took to more recently. While I don't think CMIYGL is the apex of both worlds for Tyler, I think it comes pretty close

Gorillaz - Cracker Island
65

Like every Gorillaz project, some songs are always going to land for me. I really enjoy some of the tracks here, and under different circumstances the synthy sound would seem much fresher than it is. What Cracker Island really lacks for me is character. Everything that makes Gorillaz fun and unique feels like its being slowly drained in favor of larger appeal

my bloody valentine - loveless
85

what an insanely cool, moody and ethereal soundscape

JID - The Forever Story
96

An absolute front to back BANGER of an album. I could honestly make the case that almost any of the songs could be the best one. JID is a not only a master at rapping here, but he managed to consistently create super catchy traditional "hooks" on so many of the songs that keep them fresh in my mind. The storytelling is so crystal clear, painting a vivid and engaging picture of JID's upbringing

Yves Tumor - Heaven to a Tortured Mind
89

a crazy and beautiful psychedelic experience

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - Willoughby's Beach
65

Rough around the edges and a little directionless but its got some charm

black midi - Hellfire
80

I honestly still don't fully know what to make of Black Midi. I always feel like I'm coming slightly short of fully understanding them. I totally get the chaotic appeal, but it almost feels like the music isn't quite "chaotic enough" for what I feel like the intended outcome is.

Regardless, I still think Black Midi's "Hellfire" has some awesome songs

Caroline Polachek - Desire, I Want to Turn Into You
94

catchy and beautiful, really pushing the boundaries of what pop can sound like

Kanye West - ye
73

A couple truly incredible songs on Ye, but the fact that several of the songs just don't really do it for me in an album with so few songs prevents my score from being higher

Tyler, The Creator - Goblin
58

I see the vision Tyler had for Goblin, but the attempt really misses the landing on most of the project. The subject matter just screams edgy for the sake of edgy without any kind of meaningful message. Save for a couple highlights like She and Yonkers, most songs just sort of fall flat

Joey Bada$$ - 1999
91

an almost flawlessly consistent mistape. Amazing rapping, and great beats that really nicely replicates the sound of 90s hip hop.

Kishi Bashi - Sonderlust
81

a fun project that oozes with whimsy and passion. Neat combination of contemporary pop and orchestral strings

The Arcs - Electrophonic Chronic
65

I expected a different vibe to the album based off of the cover art and the one song I had heard previous to listening. The album is definitely more bluesy than psychedelia. It's got decent songwriting and some fun sounds, but I found Electrophonic Chronic to be by the numbers in a pretty serviceable way

Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
85

I constantly go back and forth because the first solid chunk of songs absolutely GO but I'm not a fan of the larger "posse" tracks (Monster, So Appalled), and the last few songs following Runaway just don't do it for me at all (with the exception of the Bon Iver track). If the album kept the steam throughout, it'd be much higher.

Edit: Every fiber of my being wants to say "ooooh MBDTF is overrated oooh it isn't even that good" but I find it just gets harder and harder to ... read more

Mitski - The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We
86

I had very high hopes for this album, like many many others, leading up to its release. Inhospitable is a bit of a welcome return to form, while incorporating in some more country aspects that feel so natural for Mitski's style of music I barely even registered them. Its got everything you want from a Mitski album: melancholy, smooth vocals, and some really nice backing music
