A hell of a lot better than Painting With. Deakin stayed inside the boundaries of good weird, which the rest of AnCo unfortunately failed to do this year.
Yeah, I was sleeping on this. Some of the best pop from the 60's for sure.
Kevin Abstract gives me everything I wanted from Frank Ocean's new album on American Boyfriend (Hell, there's even pictures of Kevin wearing a car racing helmet, very similar to the pictures of Frank which came out around the release of Blonde). Hip hop influenced pop/r&b with a slight experimental taste to it. There are no super impressive lyrics, none of the songs stray very far away from the central theme of love, and there are 0 features. What stands out to me the most on American ... read more
It's a tolerable set of attempted 80's pop revival tracks, but 24K Magic loses its charm about 3 tracks in, making the rest of the album very repetitive and boring.
A fresh new sound from Daft Punk. Each track is incredibly smooth and upbeat, made just for the dancefloor. The features were all very satisfying, especially those from Paul Williams, Pharrell, and Panda Bear. It's a shame that the vast majority of people only think of Get Lucky when they think of Daft Punk nowadays, because they have so much more talent shown in other tracks on this LP.
fav tracks: Lose Yourself to Dance, Touch, Doin’ It Right, Beyond
The singing brings this down immensely. All of the production done by Jaar is outstanding, but I really don't think that vocals were necessary at all here. They never really fit too well with an idm/house style of electronic production.
I felt as if I could dance to this, chill to this, exercise to this, whatever. Gold Panda's most recent release is applicable to any situation, and even when not listened to in a particular situation, it's a brilliant little album of lower-key house beats which are probably the best of electronic music this year.
fav tracks: Halyards, Pink and Green, Chiba Nights
Very fun, but extremely forgettable. D.R.A.M. set the bar high with his first 3 singles leading up to this album, and unfortunately filled the record with slow and emotionless r&b instead of the sugary, upbeat hip hop that can be found on Broccoli and Cash Machine.
fav tracks: Misunderstood, Cash Machine (standout), Broccoli, Outta Sight / Dark Lavender Interlude
least fav tracks: WiFi, Sweet VA Breeze
Since I have become very experienced with hip hop, I have been looking for an album that has all of the best traits of it: energy, clever lyrics, hard ass beats, and merciless braggadocio. Mista Thug Isolation has given me all I have been looking for. Lil Ugly Mane's lyrics may not be introspective and deep, but his wordplay is some of the most humorous and interesting in rap.
He plays the persona of a hedonistic hustler with a no-fucks-given attitude, which is emphasized in the majority of ... read more
A messier and drugged out successor to Miller's masterpiece, Mista Thug Isolation. Many of the same production styles are found on The Weeping Worm, but they are made much bassier and heavier, leaving out the jazz samples and bringing in original, more electronically based production. Ugly's flow is stellar all across the album, but some of the hooks could have been improved on or made less repetitive.
This is just another reason to prove that Travis is one of the best and most creative hip ... read more
On this album, the line between black metal and death metal is blurred. I have very little experience with death metal , but the vocals on Lurker of Chalice have the same heavy, low, and sludgy inflection that the majority of death metal bands utilize. The instrumentation can be a little slow and droney to very strong, classic black metal riffs. Lyrically, each song has very personal details, which is what stands out to me the most. This isn't exactly my type of black metal; i prefer it to ... read more
This is what I'm looking for from Jaime and Mike. Aggressive bars on top of an energetic and colorful beat.
Not hyping me up very much for RTJ3... this is Run The Jewels at their most average, which is better than most rappers, but still a little disappointing.
Inconsistent and all over the place from lyrics to instrumentals. But, this is a much more blissful and uplifting record compared to the band's previous album (even with the depressing title and album art). None of these songs are super outstanding, but the album goes on from song to song in a very smooth way, even with drastic changes in the songs.
fav tracks: Truckers Are The Blood, Self-Esteem
Dude's voice had me pulling out my hair. Lyrics weren't enough for me to keep listening, and the instrumentation and production was mediocre at best.
Every little segment and piece of this album I really enjoy individually, but as a whole I'm pretty let down. Still a very interesting and overall very fun project.
