Gorillaz - The Mountain

What a breath of fresh air...

This year I decided I would listen to and rate most major releases, and so far there have been some pretty good ones, but nothing has wowed me or gave me the feeling that I would be listening to it years down the road. That is until Gorillaz swooped in with this piece of modern art. The single lineup had me a little worried, but I was pleasantly surprised that the rest of the tracks equally matched them (and in some cases outmatched them) in quality. Not only is ... read more

If I was going on a date with someone, and they picked me up in their car playing this...

I would say "Nope. Have a nice life," get out of the car, and never text them again.

Shea - Eskipade

aww cute duck plushie on the album cover!!

Wait, What Did You Say? - Stay Safe, Little One.

As far as a Midwest Emo Album made by a guy with that type of haircut goes, it easily met my expectations. There are some cringe lyrics and rhyming, but like... it's an emo album, what'd you expect?

Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
97

Coming into this with a bias for upbeat tracks with electro- influence, I was expecting some nice lyrics, but an overall snoozefest.

Yeah sorry for that, I was stupid.

The sheer amount of time it must have took researching the history and culture of Illinois blows my mind. Add that to the fact that he plays the majority of the instruments and you get the magnum opus of a seriously talented individual. The complexity and multilayered structure kept me engaged throughout the whole run time. ... read more

As it is with most experimental hip hop albums, I was blown away way by a few songs, while others just didn't do it for me. I was a bit confused. at the transition from tracks with vocals to tracks without them (for the most part), but overall I'd say I do like it. That last track was a whole odyssey though.

Tyler, The Creator - IGOR
95

This could easily become a 100 in the near future. There are just a few small things that don't quite hit the mark right now that I'll have to look past. Having said that, I can see why everyone glazes this album.

The story is incredibly done, each track sounds immaculate and there are a couple of moments that are pure euphoria. I don't really get why that one interlude couldn't be a part of either adjacent song, I guess he wanted it to stand out, but It doesn't do it ... read more

Baby Keem - Ca$ino

Yessir this is no regular trap album this is a Baby Keem album.

Favorites: Ca$ino, I am not a Lyricist

A few good songs, a few not so great songs, and a LOT of filler.

Not including Party at My Place, which would easily be the best song on this album.

Quadeca - i.ii.iii

At first I was like ehhh this is okay I guess but kinda mid and then the last track gave me actual chills.

Brent Faiyaz - Icon (Director's Cut)

I've been debating this in my mind a bit ad I've decided that my ratings for deluxe editions/reissues are going to take into account the entire track listing, not just the bonus tracks.

But seriously though. Brent. Why weren't these on the original album? Most of the tracks were good don't get me wrong, but none of them stood out to me and I had a bit of trouble picking a favorite. The two bonus tracks are both in my top 3, maybe even number 1 and 2.

It's albums like this that almost make me forget how much I miss Frank Ocean.

Almost.

femtanyl - MAN BITES DOG

Something that comes with listening 30+ minutes straight of this type of hardcore music is that they all kind of blend together and the energy just becomes a bit too much for me. That being said, they do switch it up a bit towards the end, and overall the craziness is felt and matched on my end.

hemlocke springs - the apple tree under the sea

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this. Her 80s synthpop style with a modern twist of course reminded me of Chappell Roa, but I also got a little bit of Lorde with her personal lyrics and production in some of the tracks. The beginning was a bit rough but it cleaned up its act by the end and overall I would probably give it another listen in the future.

Charli xcx - Wuthering Heights
78

Not sure if I'm gonna be bumpin' that as much as Brat, but for a soundtrack album, it's honestly amazing! I'm surprised she deviated so sharply from her previous album, but the songs kept me engaged throughout, with maybe a slight dip in quality towards the middle-end. I kept anticipating for Charli to come in on "House," and the violins kept me waiting with suspense.

Shoutout to House for spawning a bunch of memes that I could not escape from due to my friends ... read more

Tori Amos - Little Earthquakes

The Mother we didn't know we needed...

I was recommended Tori by a friend of my mother's as a fellow enjoyer of Lorde, and I think she wanted me to try out similar artists from an older era of music. At first I was like "who even is this" but looking back, I've at least heard Crucify (and probably some songs from other albums) either from my parents or the radio playing it.

It's a shame she doesn't get as much recognition on this site compared to Fiona ... read more

Joji - Piss In The Wind

Joji sure did piss on this album.

I think this might be the most disappointed I've been in an album's release so far this year. Judging based on the singles (which are genuinely great) I thought we were getting his best work, and then when it came out.. it's all just interludes?? Like seriously there's only one song here that's over 3 minutes long. I'm not saying that a song's length is directly proportional to its quality (for example Madvillainy) but in ... read more

Tyler, The Creator - Flower Boy

I don't see how anyone could dislike this album. It's relaxing, and fun. It's both easy to listen to when doing something else and also worth digging deep into its lyrical themes. This makes me excited to listen to more of Tyler's records.

J. Cole - The Fall-Off
82

I owe J. Cole an apology for comparing him to Drake and Kendrick when I should have just enjoyed his music. I've always thought he was "pretty good", but I now realize he has some real masterpieces in his discography.

I had a hunch that this would be some good shit from the music video, and I was glad that many other songs matched its lyrical flows. Like Don't Be Dumb, The Fall-Off is a reflection of how an artist has grown and matured throughout their career. I ... read more
