Saint Motel - ForPlay
95

ForPlay, like its successor, Voyeur, has an unexplainable raw energy matched with impeccable style and amazing performances. I long for Saint Motel to do this sound again, though I know they will most likely continue into their lounge pop sound with horns thrown in for good measure. I feel like everyone who has a post 2014 Saint Motel song on a playlist should hear this EP in its entirety at least once. Overall, it feels like a proper continuation of post-punk in the late 2000s, and not in a ... read more

Saint Motel - Voyeur
85

Where is the love for this album??? Saint Motel can be a mixed bag for many, but I know that one thing holds true, for what they lack in skill, they make up for in style. I have never found a modern band doing anything like what Saint Motel did for their first two major releases. Voyeur is an indie pop gem and I think it deserves way more credit than what it is granted. It has a fun sound pallete, some strong writing, an amazing vocal performance from A/J, and heaps upon heaps of style. Where ... read more

Weezer - OK Human
80

Who gave Weezer the right to be good in 2021? It's a shame that this was followed up with Van Weezer which is so forgetable I won't even bother reviewing it. OK Human feels like a proper introspective look into someone watching the world around them change during COVID. I feel like this album represents what most people actually felt during COVID. It didn't feel like some celebrity writer sad that they can't go party, it didn't feel like some rich asshole talking about how sad it is that they ... read more

Little Hurt - Every Second
55

Ok listen, I understand that any average person would hear this EP and probably shrug it off, but when it was first released I was in a mad shitty place so it caught my attention for a bit. With the power of hindsight I can say that this project is indeed a shrug, but not one with no merit whatsoever. Little Hurt is really good at making songs for teenagers who have never done drugs or had their hearts broken, and that's okay. I was almost exactly in that audience when I first heard the ... read more

Joywave - 77777
70

77777 is an interesting project. Comprised of mostly heavy sampling I feel like it was a very experimental creative endeavor, but I feel like on the project it often does not pay off, and instead many of the tracks just feel like pale imitations of the originals. Now, I'm not saying they are bad by any means, but I feel like the sampling could have been used better, or there should have been more work put in to realize a concept. Nonetheless, 77777 is still an enjoyable listen and is a solid ... read more

Joywave - 88888 (Mixtape)
80

Poor, little, misunderstood 88888. I cannpt understate how much I love this project and how much I wish people would give it more credit. 88888 has some amazing soundscapes and interesting themes that it surprises me people in the fanbase rank it so low. I feel like the choruses are catchy, verses are descriptive, and STS has some solid performances where he is featured. I feel like digging deep into this project reveals the mastery of the production and writing. I feel like the only drawback ... read more

Joywave - Koda Vista
75

Koda Vista is, at its core, a sentimental album. I feel like it set Joywave up for where they were headed, but also is somewhat nondescript. The best way I can describe this album is Joywave in their "pop-girlies" era. There's so many fun sounds in this EP. When listening to this album, summer days as a kid is what comes to mind for me. Sitting outside, sipping on a capri-sun, just waiting the day away. It has a childlike wonder to it that I feel is impossible to ignore. I find that ... read more

fun. - Aim and Ignite
90

Aim and Ignite is a damn good album. It's witty in a good way, it's well written, and it's a lively listening experience. Emotional moments are incredible and when they want to do something fun, they go for it and they don't hold back. I love all 10 of these tracks and I feel like Aim and Ignite is one of the best indie pop albums. Nate Ruess gives this project his all as vocalist and his efforts do not go in vain. It's amazing how the trio feels like a band on this record, and not like the ... read more

fun. - Some Nights
65

I feel like the best way to describe this album is "Oh my god, what the hell is this?" This album has some amazing tracks with infinite layers of detail and underlying messages to uncover, but also has that classic "Fueled by Ramen" dumb shit. I'll admit, I can get into the goofy shit on tracks like One Foot or All Alone, but tracks like It Gets Better and All Alright tend to grate on me and end up really detracting from the experience. The first four tracks on this album ... read more

Gorillaz - The Fall
70

The Fall is easily the least important installment in the Gorillaz catalogue, but I think what The Fall should be revered for is how it flipped the precedent of music production on its head. Before The Fall, a majority of major popular releases were massive studio projects that required massive funding ventures, but this was a simple album made on an iPad while on tour. Today someone making an album on an iPad is not that impressive, hell any bozo nowadays can make a competent project on a ... read more

Gorillaz - Song Machine, Season One: Strange Timez
80

Song Machine is easily the most refreshing thing Gorillaz have released since Plastic Beach. Each track brings something new to the table on this record and when it experiments, it succeeds. I rarely find a point on this album that I call boring or bland. While I do have my preferences, ultimately every track on this album has a place. I find that the production is consistently interesting and the regular music video installments for the LP were amazing. I find that Gorillaz gave Song Machine ... read more

MISSIO - Can You Feel The Sun
65

MISSIO's third major release and debut release on BMG is a decent album, but leaves a little to be desired. The album isn't bad by any means, but often falls into mediocrity and doesn't move often. When the album is good, it gets good. You can find little nuggets of goodness tucked away in this album, but also there's a lot of subpar tracks that an impatient listener may not get through. Though, I do find this project their most complete overall, even including 2022's "VILLAIN". The ... read more

Sir Sly - You Haunt Me
70

The first Sir Sly album is okay...? Like it is very simple and doesn't try doing anything crazy which is all anyone can really ask for when it comes to debut albums. They play it safe and it paid off. There are some bangers on this album and there are some duds. They really found a solid formula and repeated it 11 times. The inclusion of the Bloodlines interlude does add to the narritive value of the album, which I think creates a really fun listening experience. I find the album an easy listen ... read more

Saint Motel - The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack: Part 2
80

The second installment of Saint Motel's "The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" project is a vast improvement on the previous. I find the melodies more catchy and enjoyable. I find the writing more meaningful. I find the production more exciting. I just find the overall experience of the second installment better and more polished than the first. Other than that, it again, falls in line with everything I think people should expect from Saint Motel post My Type EP, just like the first ... read more

Cold War Kids - New Age Norms 2
65

To me, Cold War Kids are that 'bread and butter' type rock act. They don't do anything offensive or anything crazy experimental. They have a formula that works and they aren't even going to risk diverting from it. With that said, this album is a fine album. It's generic modern rock with dance grooves in there. I won't say that I dislike it, but that's because there isn't that much to dislike. It's just okay.

Saint Motel - The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack: Part 1
70

I'm gonna keep it short and sweet on the reviews of the EPs and I'll flesh out my opinions a little more when I review the project as a whole. At its core, this EP does a good job of setting up ideas and leaving room for future installments to build on, while also acting as an individual piece of work. Other than that there is not much I can say about this EP. It's definitely Saint Motel. I has a classy feel while also having that pop sheen to it. It doesn't do anything wholly special, but ... read more

Glass Animals - Dreamland
45

This is gonna be a big chungus of a review from me, so get some snacks and a drink if you plan to read this whole thing.

Starting off, 2020 was not a good year for anyone. I don't think this is a hot take by any means. The leadup to Dreamland was really the only thing carrying me in 2020, so I at least owe it that. The album and it's singles got me through a rough few months. That being said, for the first month that the album was out I hailed it as the best of the year, potentially already ... read more

Foster the People - Supermodel
65

I don't get the love for this album within the Foster The People fanbase. I found it very one note and forgettable. I won't deny it has its moments, but so much of it just feels so bleh. Like of the indie pop coming out in 2014 this is by far on the lower end of the scale. It's just a bland album that I rarely feel like I want to return to. I liked Foster The People's debut because it was unabashedly being a fun pop album with some great melodies and memorable tracks, I find myself returning to ... read more
