The Caretaker - An empty bliss beyond this World
95

God damn it's already been 100 albums, I'm getting so nostalgic for something I started doing 2 months ago and didn't think I'd follow through, and here I am. Since this was the big 100 I knew I wanted to listen to something special, not just an album I could grab off the shelf, listen to, not think anything about it after. I wasn't really in the mood for listening to upbeat music, same with listening to downer music. Pretty much the only genre that can evoke no ... read more

The Beatles - Rubber Soul
79

The Beatles were truly a progressive bunch, in the 60s it was completely uncommon to let a woman drive your car.

Lil Ugly Mane - UNEVEN COMPROMISE
89

Ok so I didn't want to just listen to that shitty me&me EP for today because it felt lazy just putting on something that no effort outside of spite was put into it. I've heard a lot of friends rave about Lil Ugly Mane and it was an artist I had on my radar for a long time, his weird and abstract aesthetic caught my attention, as is the case with this EP. Wow this is a great track, I can't put down exactly what I really like about it. Maybe it's the Big Brother type beat ... read more

The Magnetic Fields - Get Lost
80

I've been very into Magnetic Fields' music these days, just doom listening to the best songs from 69 Love Songs and specifically I Don't Believe You from i. Of course this new found interest has led to me listening to some more of their other stuff prior to 69, this was the only one I have on CD. It's very interesting sound-wise, you can see bits and pieces from their predominantly synth pop days mixed with glimmers from their more grounded sound starting in 69 Love Songs, ... read more

Dead Kennedys - In God We Trust, Inc.
77

Oh shit it's already over. I saw this comment on one of their songs that said that the less punk a band looks the more they are, which after hearing this I wholeheartedly agree on. It takes no chances this one, it sacrifices being somewhat catchy for most of it in order to be as fast, loud and lyrically charged as it can be, I dig it. I'm happy that most songs are 1-2 minutes long because keeping that pace for longer wouldn't sound as good as it does here. Now if they could just ... read more

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - I'm in Your Mind Fuzz
79

Aussies in my mind fuzz. I got gifted this one on vinyl and for some reason it says on the cardboard spine it's an "audiophile version"? I'm not sure if a 42 minute album pressed on 2 separate vinyls makes it sound any better on a Crosley, I mean they could've fitted everything just fine on one of them right? Weird stuff, but nevertheless it's a pretty good album. I like to oversimplify and dumb down things a lot, for me this one feels like the music playing when ... read more

Ween - White Pepper
89

I've felt like going through Ween's whole discography these days, I think I'm getting too bored with myself. Anyways here we have White Pepper, the "normal" album. That's the thing that sets it apart is its tone: this album is Ween at their relatively most normal sound, you're not going to find any funny business in this selection of 10 tracks. Mind you that serious does not mean that its their darkest or saddest record, there are a lot of genuinely upbeat ... read more

Chico Science & Nação Zumbi - Da Lama Ao Caos
83

I was introduced to these guys by my father and learned their whole backstory and how they pioneered the genre of Manguebeat and how Chico Science died young and everything. A complete shame, this album is great. Best way to describe it is complete unadulterated fun, this guy has so much charisma just oozing from his flow and those bright instrumentals, fusing Brazilian funk with heavier rock elements. All of it bounces off nicely and throughout the whole hour I had a smile stapled to my face, ... read more

Ween - 12 Golden Country Greats
87

Certainly a one of a kind Ween album. While a lot of their catalogue is them fucking around with various music genres and ideas this album's sound is completely consistent: country. And not only is it really good but it's actually played completely straight in the musical side, you won't find any out of place elements outside of that weird guitar riff in Piss Up A Rope. Of course the lyrics are Ween, so they're pissgold. These guys were committed to the bit, they gathered a ... read more

I've always wondered who was the person on the cover, no reason whatsoever. After listening to this I've come to the conclusion that this album is what defines Ween as a band: highly talented serious scheißeposters. You've got a whole bunch of catchy, melodic and sometimes beautiful songs that you could very easily find in the catalogue of other great artists from whatever genre they're playing, and you've got the experimental mambo jumbo of the second half. And ... read more

The Prodigy - The Fat of the Land

my bloody valentine - glider
85

That cover is a real eye catcher for sure. I was surprised to find out this had soon in it, for the longest time I thought it was made for loveless only, guess they had a slot to fill up when they weren't infesting houses with chinchillas. It's a cool EP, you can definitely start to see the way they're shaping their sound, the tone is near identical to the one in loveless I think. It's a nice break of pure noise, the distortion is fuzzy like a blanket, good stuff.

Various Artists - The Fire This Time
97

An audio documentary on the Gulf War with IDM tracks in the background, you're presented with a nice, cookie cutter narration with some audio extracts to contextualize the events being described. At least, that's what it starts like. The doc starts to shift in tone and atmosphere, the narrator falls silent while you are left with the music and audio snippets from politicians and the sort. This uneasy sensation starts creeping up on you as the doc progresses, its focus starts shifting ... read more

Ween - The Friends EP
70

This EP is tough to get your hands on here in Europe, this was gifted to me from America where I assume more Ween is available. Sealed and everything it's incredible. The thing about Ween is that they're a band that you can either take seriously or not, and that usually works to their disadvantage because this makes people think they're a joke rather than them making joke songs. But here this mindset ends up working off, because I could not take seriously any of the songs in here ... read more
