One of my friends put me on to funeral a few months ago, and notified me of a new single from him dropping today. I was pretty surprised with the sound of this, since funeral typically follows an emo-rage sound, at least based on his LP "I Know Something You Don't." This song feels like a breath of fresh air, with its soft drums and breathy vocals. If someone with more recognition than funeral made this song, I'm sure it would be all over the radio right now, but hopefully ... read more
Album #91/275 (top 33.1%), rap album #47/158 (top 29.7%)
While this new project from Saba doesn't match the compelling storytelling of "CARE FOR ME" or the stylistic variety of "Few Good Things," it has a more refined, mature sound, featuring acoustic production from legendary boom-bap producer No ID. This album really didn't have any bad moments: it's just a bit underwhelming coming from someone whose music I enjoy as much as Saba.

My personal favorite work by Future, DS2 has banger after banger with hedonistic lyricism.
kmoe's noisy shoegaze debut on the rising deadAir label (which features Jane Remover, Quadeca and others) is more than notable. Kale is one of my favorite vocalists of all time, which is quite a big statement, but I feel he deserves it: he has a vocal tone that feels like coming home to a warm fireplace after a long day in the snow, in a way, and I also really enjoy his falsetto. The production on this song is noisy yet calculated, which streamlines it into fitting kmoe's vocal style ... read more
While inconsistent, "Tread" offers enjoyable rhythms and calming production.
Favorites: The Daisy, Love Divide, XXX Olympiad (#1), Grub
Least favorite: Morning Sun In A Dusty Room (this title is fire though)
While the heavier tracks on this EP aren't up to the quality of the melodic ones in my opinion, there are so many great moments on this project that it isn't much of an issue for me. Plus, "Found" might just be my favorite song of all time.

SABA announces to the world that he's a face that should be recognized in the rap game with his thoughtful LP "CARE FOR ME." Deep lyrics are balanced with calming production throughout this project, and all of it is of very high quality.
Favorites: BUSY / SIRENS (#1), CALLIGRAPHY, GREY, PROM / KING

I don’t know what happened in between House of Balloons and this but this mixtape was super boring. There really didn’t seem to be much of a progression or reason for why the songs were the lengths that they were. When the Drake feature is a highlight of the mixtape, you know you have a problem. That said, Abel’s voice is still really good, but that’s about it.
Favorites: The Zone, The Birds Pt. 1, The Birds Pt. 2

While House of Balloons may top this mixtape, I still am blown away by how ahead of its time Echoes of Silence is. From the storytelling of D.D, to the changing vocal pitch of Initiation, to the beauty of the closing title track, this mixtape brings a lot to the table that wasn't present from 2011 -- at least, not to this level of quality.
Favorites: D.D, Montreal, Same Old Song (#1), Echoes Of Silence
Least favorite: The Fall
This is exactly what I wanted from an old The Weeknd album. Industrial and mysterious production is matched with Abel’s soft vocals and drugged-out songwriting. Not a single bad moment on this album, just a few boring and redundant sections.
Favorites: Professional, Adaptation, Belong To The World

While this is the most inconsistent album by The Weeknd so far, the lows aren't even as low as some from the Trilogy, and the highs show how far Abel has come since Kiss Land. This is one of those rare albums where I can completely understand why all the hits are as massive as they are. Specifically "Can't Feel My Face" has a pretty large nostalgia value for me too. I feel like the features didn't really add anything to the album, surprisingly, but they weren't bad ... read more
