The Crazy World of Arthur Brown - The Crazy World of Arthur Brown

A really fun psych album with a stellar cover.

The‎ River - The River

A very groovy soul album. The vocals are kinda goofy, but very charming.

Daniel Johnston - Hi, How Are You: The Unfinished Album
98

Genuinely one of the most touching and emotional pieces of music that has ever been recorded. Although lacking in a technical sense, it deffinetley heightens the emotional potency. Daniel Johnston eas a troubled soul with absolutely zero filter, which is why he's known as an outsuder musician. You could never get anything this beutiful, depressing, and charming from anyone else.

Charles Manson - Lie: The Love and Terror Cult
60

When I was doing research for my list of outsider musicians, this name popped up quite a few times. When I first saw it I just thought some guy had named themself after Manson for shock value, but no, this was made by the cult leader himself. If anyone else were to make this project I would not bat an eye. The music itself is some pretty enjoyable lo-fi folk with a couple psychedelic elements. The performances are reminiscent of Daniel Johnston with a bit more twang. Except for the opener, look ... read more

The beat to I was broke almost made me cry

Muthsera - Bonemother
78

Being a clearly home recorded album using only one instrument and a singer with a bit of a monotone voice, it's a very charming project. Sometimes there are some vocal samples, but they get drowned out by all the guitars. While there are some clear areas for improvement, this album carries a lot of potential.

Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells
80

A pretty nice single track album. Being mostly an instrumental project, it's carried by some very grand and symphonic movements over the runtime. A lot of blissful melodies pop up during this as well.

Alexander's Radio Experiment - Corporate House
89

First time actually checking out Kyle's music, and I regret not doing it earlier. This album is a house project that took inspiration from several vapor wave albums. I was expecting to hear Kyle himself singing on this project, but it's mostly composed of synths and samples. It honestly reminds me of Remain In Light by Talking Heads. Kyle is doing an imitation of other music he likes, but he's not really good at it, resulting in a completely new sound. The album also devolves into a less ... read more

Depeche Mode - Violator

I just don't get a lot of this one. The synths feel very incomplete. The lyrics are very simple, and the aesthetic doesn't really make up for that.

Tom Waits - Rain Dogs
80

This album is really odd for the '80s, but I couldn't tell you if that's because it's ahead if its time or behind it. Tom Waits voice is so raspy. It allows him to play so many characters. This album explores many styles of music. Combining blues with some very oceanic horns and very playful percussion elements. It really just does its own thing for the entire runtime.

Derek and The Dominos - Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs
70

I guess it was better back in '70. I love all the soloing amd guitar work on this album, but I feel like the rest has been done to death since.

The Mothers of Invention - Freak Out!
70

Knowing this was Zappa's band I expected a wildly avant garde project, but it ended being surprisingly of the times. Maybe because it was actually a parody of the kind of rock music around then. The vocals are goofy and awkward, which once again subverted my expectations of some Crazy Excentric singing I knew from Zappa. Frank actually isn't as present as I thought he would be, at least vocally. Besides all the fun stuff, it's just a pretty standard psych album.

Jack Stauber - Finite Form
50

I feel like Jack evolved quite a bit from this as an artist. It's nothing I would actively hate on, but I feel like he would go on to make some much more refined music.

Death Grips - No Love Deep Web
62

I was honestly excited to check out this project after hearing the background, but I think the backstory is more intresting than the music with this one. I guess it marks a transition for Death Grips in a way. Still, I was way too hyped after hearing the whole story of how this was litterally leaked by the people who made it.

The Doors - The Doors
70

Honestly I was a bit confused on this record, but I've come around to it. It's some very nice psychedelic rock, with some amazing songs. The album opens on the Break ON Through, a very fun and radio friendly song. BY the end of the album you're met with The End. An eleven minute track that goes through sone insane motions. Definitely a crucial psychrock album.

Deee-Lite - Sampladelic Relics & Dancefloor Oddities
68

I know this isn't a rare sentiment, but this always stood out to me as the oddest perfect score from Brad. It was deffinetley the cover that did it for me, but it has to be the most deceiving cover of all time cus I did not get what I was expecting. The cover had me prepared for Brazilian children's music, but this is actually a remix house album. I'm not very familiar with house as genre besides One More Time, so this just felt like a very simple electronic album to me. I will say, I honestly ... read more
