D'Angelo - Voodoo
88

Voodoo is such a cool title. The cover is iconic too.

Does the music hold up to it?

Spoiler: It does.
D'Angelo has such a smooth voice, that is no secret. The production is really soulful too and let's D'Angelo really shine. The funky and psychedelic influence works so well with his early hip hop Soul influence that lays a nice base for these newer sounds he experiments with on here. Definitely a reason this is called one of the best RnB Albums of all time.

Childish Gambino - "Awaken, My Love!"
85

Very Fun Summer listen. Childish Gambino really cooked with this one...but what is 'California'? Never do that style again bro...

But on the real... I really like what this album tries to do. A psychedelic funky fusion of genres that creates warm and beautiful soundscapes. Sometimes simpler and sometimes more advanced. The guitars used elevate the funky vibe elementary and enhance the whole project by giving a raw edge to a clean sounding base. However not every song has that much ... read more

Raekwon - Only Built 4 Cuban Linx...
92

One of the coolest Rap Albums I ever heard. Hard hitting beats and peak rapping by the best Wu Tang Duo. (As this is almost a collab album). I can't say a lot except it's really good and one of the best Wu Tang related albums I heard, but it also has its weaker songs.

95

The Cover is how I look at bro if he tells me his breakfast was Y-Food.

Spacey + Dark Trap = the 2010s were goated

This is just an even more cohesive work than DS2, and this isn't even a studio album. The Beats are hard hitting and still spacey at points. Also Future really shines on here: He goes hard but also introspective (kinda) and sings more heartfelt. Still bringing the peak toxic anthems in. I mean that's just Future. It also might have my 2 favorite Future Songs on it too, ... read more

Lil Yachty - Let's Start Here.
92

Lil Boat became Big Spaceship with this one.

I love the nostalgic and calm feel the record has, it doesn't just create a warm atmosphere that pulls you in, but it also opens you up to let all the problems you have flying away in the endless space that doesn't care.
Lil Yachty really smashed the 70s psychedelic sound and added his own modern twist. I never hated his vocals to begin with, but he never sounded better than on this record. The features were incredible as well.

B0AH - KEEP IT
65

So I really liked the first minute. It had a solid melody (slayr vibes) and nice bass+drums. What I didn't like was the calmer, less bass heavy sequence right after minute 1, that just took dynamic away from the song. With Vocals this could be overshadowed but without this just sounded empty. In this sequence (if you try to achieve some of that floating vibe you get with ezcodlyee too) you could add more synths fo example. I think this song could have had a nice addition of distorted e ... read more

Eazy-E - Eazy-Duz-It
78

Why is this kinda hated? It's pretty tuff. Production is great and Easy E is a good rapper. His flow is top tier and in comparison to today's rappers he is a good lyricist as well...

This might just be a Classic.

Kehlani - Kehlani
65

I like the way your body is (I do), is that too obvious?
Okay, I like your confidence (I do)
Oh, that's what good karma is, okay (you got potential)
Li-like Kehlani is, bad just like Kehlani is, okay (you got, you)

Yes it's that Kehlani! However Kehlani feels very generic here. Just generic RnB with solid vocals but the project is missing soul overall, which is hard to say when the genre is Soul but it kinda hits the nail on the head. The features could have been so much better too. ... read more

JPEGMAFIA - LP! (Offline Version)
88

The best JPEGMAFIA project, period.
I know it's the highest rated, but for a reason. The production is so beautiful and entirely what I am looking for with a Jpeg record. It feels like a weird dream and I'm all here for it.

Danny Brown - Atrocity Exhibition
95

Atrocity Exhibition amazes me in its artistry. While I never been a big fan of Danny Brown's voice, I warmed up to it and can now enjoy the record for what it is- a downward spiral in darkness, addiction and craziness. Something that is sonically done very good and pleasing for my taste in music.

Lelo - New Detroit
68

Good Detroit Cloud Rap 🙌

Lucki if he wasnt as depressed and popping sleep pills.

So kind of a worse Lucki lol

Jean Dawson - Pixel Bath
92

Deserves a must hear.

Another very interesting, different sounding indie project by Jean Dawson. The genre bending he does creates a dynamic soundscape that works really well for him. What a feel good record.

Hass - THE SECOND COMING
52

Some really good sample flips. Send Me an Angel is such a great song I myself always sampled as well.

Hassan has a solid delivery but it feels a bit unfinished, I'll agree on that. Production is good overall and could have been great. Songs feel short and don't have a real song structure and/or build up.

A Tribe Called Quest - The Low End Theory
88

My Low End Theory is that the best albums have to get negative reception around the time they come out to be really influential and be seen as one of the most important albums in the legacy of a genre later on.

This album wasn't one of them entirely and is one of the exceptions to the rule as they were influential but didn't had a long time waiting for success. By using a bass heavy mix with jazz they create smooth & very chill soundscape something that still sounds modern and ... read more

Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique
85

While looking for the 80s classics I found myself back in the discography of the legendary Beastie Boys and let me tell you, they topped their debut by a lot.

This album has a similar fun group hip hop style like the first one on multiple songs, but not on all. The production here is way more atompsheric and detailed compared to Rick Rubin Hard Rock and hit heavy approach. I feel like this production aged way better, by incorporating funky sounds and the craziest samples you can think off. ... read more

Slick Rick - The Great Adventures of Slick Rick
75

For my series where I want to find all the real classics in hip hop we are back with Yuno Miles father.

This album is just super influential in its story telling, but I actually really fw Rick's Slick Flow. Also it's just a joy to listen to because he doesn't take himself too serious, it's just fun.
Yes it's weird too, but that's kinda the point, right?

Now the question that remains: is it a certified classic?

Eric B. & Rakim - Paid In Full
78

Rakim is widely regarded as one of Hip Hop's most influential MC's, so this is what brought me here to check if this is an actual classic.

First of all, his flow impressed me a lot and but the beats, while nostalgic didn't entertain me all the way through, some instrumentals, while mostly good, just drag. Also I think the mixing is a bit off on certain songs. However this doesn't mean you don't get a lot of great moments here and Rakim makes it an actually good tape. ... read more

N.W.A. - Straight Outta Compton
82

Next up I went Straight Into Compton for my series where I want to find all the real classics in hip hop.

I like the West Coast Flair and the rapping is some of the best I heard in the 80s. Legendary songs and legendary rappers, but also some weaker cuts. Eazy-E and Ren will forever be underrated but Ice Cube on this tape is still carrying a lot.

Now the question that remains: is it a certified classic?

I think if own album is a classic, than it's this one...

De La Soul - 3 Feet High and Rising
82

I'm here for my series where I want to find all the real classics in hip hop. And I'm definitely right de la Soul.

Production is very creativ but the rapping is not the best. Overall a bit overrated, but good.

Now the question that remains: is it a certified classic?

Run-D.M.C. - Raising Hell
75

For my series where I want to find all the real classics in hip hop we are back with Beastie Boys' black brothers.

This album has a similar fun group hip hop style and some great production by- again - Rick Rubin. I feel like their music ages a bit better, but also not perfectly. The flows are simple but at least they have chemistry and I also like their voices more than those of the beastie boys. It's pretty cohesive but also doesn't have too many standouts, pretty good tape ... read more
