Chance the Rapper - The Big Day
5

MESSY

Enter Chance the Rapper, apparently, one of those adults who are convinced of their own maturity, but in reality, are frowned upon by every other generation.

Terribly written, and terribly performed. The lyrics are so bad that one can take any line from this record, and rant about everything wrong with it for twenty minutes straight. Of course, lyrics this horrible make it nearly impossible for Chance to push out a good performance, and guess what, he didn’t do the impossible. ... read more

Imagine Dragons - Smoke + Mirrors
28

PASSABLE

Coming in at an entirely unjustified one hour and twenty minutes, Imagine Dragons’ much-anticipated sophomore LP released in 2015 is a major let down, in every sense of the phrase. A bad album in a great year for albums.

A safe but financially successful first record apparently sent a message to the members of this bland pop rock band that they should try being ‘experimental’, because they try some new things compared to the content on ‘Night Visions’. ... read more

Radiohead - Amnesiac

DISCONNECT

An underrated masterpiece mislabelled as glorified Kid A b-sides. ‘Amnesiac’ has moments of pure, pulsating intensity and brilliance. A Radiohead record in heart and soul, just as experimental and just as good.

One thing that Amnesiac has, which Kid A doesn’t, is moments which make you think about who would actually listen to this casually. There are some moments here and there which would’ve been better off shortened a minute or two, mostly because of ... read more

Jaden - ERYS
22

DELUSIONAL

There are a dozen rappers out there who I’d rather give the assets Jaden Smith has. He has ambition, connections, talent and the budget to bring it all to life, but he’s still putting out mediocre to bad music.

‘ERYS’ is better than ‘SYRE’, but that’s not saying much. Both records are the definition of front-loaded with ‘PINK’ and ‘BLUE’ being the best full tracks. This means that he sets up the theme well to begin ... read more

Refused - The Shape of Punk to Come
90

REVOLUTIONARY

Let me get this straight. This is a hardcore punk record where the bandmates are taking it out on each other with jazz influences, ambient interludes, art punk and instrumental genius. The peak of aggression music with fuck everything at its core, probably motivated by the band deciding they had to break up while writing this album. They truly had nothing left to lose.

Over the top at times, the punk instrumentals stay within the boundaries of enjoyment, and always manages to ... read more

Billie Eilish - WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?
80

INTIMATE

This Billie Elish record is lyrics-wise very much a reflection of her age. Subjects like heartbreak or very domestic struggles hit her hard, because she’s experiencing these things for the first time. After all, she’s only seventeen.

Even when a slightly corny line can be picked out, the quality of the music found here absolutely compensates for it, I’d argue, to an extent where any corniness is no longer a downweight at all.

Billie and her brother offer some ... read more

Bry - Bry
10

INNOCENT

Bry (formerly performed under the stage name: Bribry) has not released any material that many people would take all that seriously. Yes, it’s wholesome, innocent, often very warm, and all-round a nice easy listen.

The second track ‘I Hope You’re Listening’ is one of the better songs on this LP. It portrays the victory one feels from succeeding, but it hardly feels victorious when you still feel bitter for those who didn’t support you. There’s a ... read more

The Temper Trap - The Temper Trap
67

I criminally overrate the first two Temper Trap LPs because of pure nostalgia. I am sorry.

(at least I attempted to give them realistic ratings)

The Temper Trap - Conditions
77

NOSTALGIC

Look, I'm not even going to try and pretend that I can be objective while writing this (even though art is subjective anyways).

Every note on 'Conditions' leaves me drowning in nostalgia, and I am unable to do anything against that. Saying something bad about this album will have me sad for the next hour or so.

Thank you.

Favourite tracks: Fuckin' all of em shut up okay.

The Raconteurs - Help Us Stranger
62

WHOLESOME

It's nice to see these old friends come back together just to play some good ol' blues rock. Jack White and Brendan Benson are not what I would describe as small names in rock music.

This is the kind of music which will no doubt be all over alternative and rock radio channels, but outside of that, it does very little. Especially, if we’re comparing this to Jack White’s latest solo effort.

This album lacks a good album opener. Somewhere around the halfway point, the ... read more

Radiohead - Kid A
97

HORRIFYING
In many ways.

A sound collage of post-rock. Radiohead recorded in groups, separated from each other, and then coming back together to piece it all together. Thom Yorke created the lyrics by writing down lines randomly on many pieces of paper and picking them out one by one.

The emotion is not necessarily found in the lyrics, but rather in the electronics and instrumentals. Thom was hesitant to sing in general, still burned out from the OK Computer touring. The music sets the tone ... read more

Thom Yorke - ANIMA
88

IMMERSION.

This isn’t Thom Yorke at his most accessible, but ‘ANIMA’ works quite well in terms of sound and aesthetic.
This is good. It’s really good. It’s his best solo effort thus far.
In fact, we just get another one of Thom Yorke’s brilliant efforts at presenting the everyday dread with rhythm as the main guide.

I am of the opinion that a lot of Thom’s solo work has felt empty. There was always a void where the rest of Radiohead was supposed to ... read more

Joji - Sanctuary
50

Joji is progressing nicely. especially in terms of vocals. 'Sanctuary' features some vocal passages which would've been unthinakble for George some two years ago. Saunctuary doesn't really do anything for me though. If this is the new direction his music is going in, well, I'm not sure how I feel about just yet. This leaves me craving for BALLADS 1's lovely aesthetic.

Radiohead - In Rainbows
94

SPOTLESS

In Rainbows has been a sleeper album for me, personally, I’ve grown to love it over a long period of time. I even remember my first playthrough where my response was basically just: “Ain’t as good as OK Computer though.”

‘In Rainbows’ covers a set of recurring themes. These most obviously include identity, life and death, but the one I find to be more interesting is the concept of chasing something which isn’t really there > a rainbow. A ... read more

The Black Keys - Let's Rock
60

One of those albums you purchase the disk for because you want to listen to it where it's at its best, but unfortunately, you don't yet own a car which can link up with your phone.

It's the bare basics of garage blues rock, but this album kind of seems like the necessary comeback for the Black Keys after a lengthy hiatus. They play it with safe with an album that almost can't go wrong. Simple instrumentation that hits the right keys.

The singles might be some of the worst tracks on the ... read more

Post Malone - Wow.
53

Beerbongs & bentleys seems to have started a Posty-era where his production is truly on point, and I appreciate that. This track is far from interesting though.

Post Malone - Goodbyes
49

Production really good. Young Thug really bad. Lyrics really mediocre.
Beat and production make this song.

Radiohead - OK Computer
98

By far the best record I've ever heard. This album is closer to my heart than any other piece of art or entertainment.
I truly believe that this may be the closest an album will ever get to being the perfect 100.

Thom, Johnny and co. are the best the music industry has to offer in terms of mind. Creating an aesthetic that not only works, but is also well (re)presented all over the album. Not a single thing feels out of place. It all clicks so well.
An image so vivid, I can see the story ... read more

Hermit and the Recluse - Orpheus vs. the Sirens
86

VIVID.

Hermit and the Recluse is a project by rapper Ka and producer Animoss, and damn what a beautiful project it is.

Orpheus vs. the Sirens might be one of the most vivid rap albums I have ever experienced. It has revived my interest in Greek mythology for the first time since my history classes on the subject.
This album is the Game of Thrones of music. In visuals, but mostly in writing.

The album is short, and that’s really good. An album like this shouldn’t drag on too ... read more

Injury Reserve - Injury Reserve
77

Injury Reserve is surprisingly fresh and interesting.
Slowly but surely, they're getting the attention they deserve.

They're experimental enough to where it's fascinating what they do, but you're not always looking for the deeper meaning, for the
clue, which is supposed to make this experiment come together. Something, which many experimental rap records struggle with. A good example of that is the 2018 Hermit and the Recluse record, which is based on Greek mythology (of all things).
My ... read more
